Walk- Zach Pollinger 6:17.96 Last month in Madison Square Garden, 16-year-old Zach Pollinger (Mahwah, NJ) became the youngest individual event winner in Millrose Games history when he topped the men’s walk field. Competing against his own age group Saturday in Landover, Pollinger broke the meet record with a winning time of 6:17.96. The old standard, 6:20.37, was set two years ago by Ben Shorey. “I wanted to break the national record (6:11.00),” Pollinger told NSSF’s Ricky Quintana. “I missed by five seconds, but I have another meet tomorrow.” Pollinger, second here last year as a sophomore, had unofficial splits of 43.4 (200), 1:29.4 (400), 3:04.3 (800), 5:30.1 (1400) and 6:15.5 (1600). “I think my second and third 400 were slow,” he analyzed. “My first was good. It got away in the middle. I was pretty happy with my performance, though.” Pollinger’s closest competiton was Christopher Diaz (McAllen, TX), the runnerup in 6:33.87. “Usually, I race more at local meets and I’m by myself,” said Zach. “I was good to have someone behind me, pushing me.” Third was John Koziel (Lisbon, ME) in 7:26.64. Diaz is a sophomore while Koziel is a freshman.
