Boys Shuttle
Hurdle- Trenton Central-NJ 30.27 The rarely contested shuttle hurdle relays is one of indoor track’s most raucous events. Combining speed, strength and split-second coordination with four runners covering 240 meters and six hurdles, the event is lightning-quick and loud. So loud that even the din of a frenzied, mainly teenage crowd can’t temper the clatter of clipped and bouncing barriers. By the last of Saturday’s six sections, the noise had grown to rock concert-like decibels. An all New Jersey crowd took the field: Trenton Central in red-trimmed black uniforms, Franklin Township in day-glo yellow and Winslow Township in sedate green. The Trenton squad took an early lead, but gradually gave ground. The anchor leg promised to bring the race to a literal screeching halt. It never happened, as the fourth runners, Franklin’s Jeff Porter and Rueben McCoy of Winslow Township, crashed to the floor almost simultaneously at the second hurdle. Trenton Central finished alone in 30.27 for the day’s fastest time and a trip to the victory stand. Trenton Central’s lineup consisted of Freddy Vaneus, Trey Boone, Calvin Rhodes and Irving Stills, all seniors. “We were pressed, but we’ve run against these same teams every day,” said Trenton Central coach Al Jennings. “We wanted to be with them (in the final section) because they’re the best.” Added Stills, “I’m super happy. We’ve waited four years to do this. I had to leave them. I had to run. After that kid (McCoy) fell, I knew it was us and Franklin. We just had to win.” Porter, who got up and crossed the finish line in 32.33, gets a chance to redeem himself Sunday. The Franklin Township senior is one of the leading entries in the 60m hurdles. McCoy, shaken up by the fall, did not finish. Palm Beach Lakes (FL) wound up second in 30.67 the Jaguars of New Jersey
third in 30.96. Palm Beach Lakes won the fourth section while the Jaguars
ran in section five.
