Boys Pentathlon-Adam
Fretwell (TX) 3408 Pentathlon- 60 meters Outside Prince George’s County Sports Complex in Landover, Md., Saturday, sunshine and lukewarm breezes offered hope of the coming spring. Inside on the facility’s 200 meter flat track, the National Scholastic Sports Foundation’s annual end-of-winter high school track and field ritual, the Nike Indoor Championships, opened with multi-event competition. Fourteen contestants turned out for the boys competition. When the five sections of the 60 meter hurdles sections ended, Adam Fretwell (Houston, TX), emerged as the leader. Fretwell, an age group intermediate decathlon champ last summer, took the hurdles in 8.38 seconds, good for 888 points. Fretwell, pre-selected for the World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada, this Jully, won the second section. Chad Andrews (Richardson, TX), winner of the fourth section in 8.51, stood second with 858 points. Third was Kalen Schiedt (Marietta, GA). Schiedt won the first section in 8.61, good for 834 points.
Adam Fretwell still led after the second event, but Kalen Schiedt leapfrogged past Chad Andrews into second place. Fretwell jumped 21-6 (6.55) on his second attempt for 709 points, while Schiedt’s best effort, 6.64 (21-9.5), came in the first round. Schiedt and Andrews both cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m) to earn 585 points. The day’s top clearance was 6-4.75 (1.95m) by Michael Murawski
(Cinnaminson, NJ). Murawski, competing in his first multi-event competition,
took 758 points and moved into fourth place with a 2550-point aggregate.
Boys Pentathlon - 1,000 meters Adam Fretwell held off Kalen Schiedt to hold on for victory in the pentathlon. Fretwell covered the conclusive 1,000 meters in 2:57.38, good for 690 points and a 3408 total. Schiedt, who trailed Fretwell for most of the competition, finished second with 3315 points. Schiedt’s 1,000m time was 3:05.68, worth 610 points. “I just had to beat that kid in the 1,000,” said the 16-year-old Fretwell. “I knew I was a better distance guy, since I ran against (Schiedt) before. I had the confidence I could beat him, so I just ran my own race.” Third was Chad Andrews with 3235 while multi-event newcomer Michael Murawski took fourth at 3187. Andrews’ time for the last event was 3:08.24 (586 points) while Murawski finished in 3:02.81 (637 points). First place in the event went to Michael Wall (Syracuse, NY), who finished in 2:49.51. Wall wound up sixth with 3076 points behind fifth-placer Daniel Cowan (Toms River, NJ), who totaled 3094 points. “I’ve only run one other time indoors,” concluded
Fretwell. “I’m happy with winning. The only thing I’m
disappointed with is my high jump. I only cleared my opening height. If
I could have done better in the high jump, I’d be happier.” Results
