Boys 4xMile-
Midlothian-VA 18:09.45 Taylor Matthews, Brandon Miles, Billy Berlin and Ryan Witt teamed up to give Midlothian (Va.) HS a first-place finish in 18:09.45. The foursome were part of the team placed first at last fall’s Virginia state cross country meet. “It’s a pretty sweet feeling,” gushed Miles. “It’s right up there with winning the state cross country title.” Bespectacled Joe Brannen of Hillsborough (NJ) HS led for most of the first leg, and Freddy Torres of Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, NC) took command just before the first exchange. The lead changed hands several times on the second leg, with Midlothian and Hillsborough playing Alphonse and Gaston. Hillsborough’s Mark Klueber put some distance between himself and the field. St. Xavier (Cincinnati) moved into third place on the third leg as Midlothian reclaimed the lead. Then Red Bank (NJ) surged into second to challenge the Virginians. Midlothian began churning away from the field courtesy of Witt’s 4:36 closing split. Hillsborough finished second in 18:19.50 with St. Xavier a close third in 18:19.53. “I wanted to go out hard and hoped the other teams would give up and not try to catch me,” said Witt. “I think I might have gone out a little too fast, but it worked out good in the end.”
