True to the seedings, things sped up, race to race to race to race.
It was Manchester, Va. in race one (1:47.83), South Lakes, Va. (alma mater of mile great Alan Webb) in race two (1:47.31) and Upper Darby, Pa. in number three (1:44.15.)
And now the speediest six took over.
A California team, Wilson of Long Beach, set the Nike record of 1:40.04 in 1999 and another California team, James Logan High, gave it a good run in its 1:40.35 2003 decision.
It was oh-so-close in this event that always generates electricity Philadelphia’s William Penn High was a nosed-out second in 1:40.38.
In a duel of Virginians, Bethel (1:42.51) fought off Western Branch (1:43.38) for third.
Brittani Dudley, Cherri Craddock, Talia Stewart and Kristina Davis did the gold-medal stickwork for Logan.

Davis, a freshman flyer, declared “I was scared but I was excited. Going into the last curve, I knew she (the Penn anchor) was mine.”

As Dudley put it, “we had to come farther than anyone (California) to race here, but that’s (winning) the reason we came.”

Now Logan must ready itself for outdoor clashes with California powers Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson.
“There’s no bad rivalry,” said Dudley. “We just want to go out hard, work well, and finish strong.”
