High school vaulting had been dominated by Samantha Shephard of Weston, Va. for years. She’d won the last two Nike titles and still owns the USA frosh, soph, junior and senior records, with a best-ever 13-4 ¼ at this meet last year.

Now, it’s time for new talent to move up the ranks and Jenny Green of Central Catholic High of Grand Island, Nebraska was the logical successor.

Second to Shephard last year (with a 12-9 ½ clearance), she duly moved up to gold this time at 12-5 ½, but missing thrice at 12-9 ½.

Also going 12-5 ½ was Anna McFarlane of Concord, Mass., but she settled for silver on more misses on the way up. Three others went 12-1 ½ - Stevie Marshalek of Black Diamond, Wash., Sara Young of Laurens, S.C. and Katie Morgan of Tempe., and they medaled 3-4-5 in that order.
