Girls 2-Mile
Nicole Blood (NY) 10:27.61

by John Dye

Saratoga NY freshman Nicole Blood 10:27.61 blazed a big early lead and ran alone the rest of the way for a decisive victory, although visibly tiring at the end. Carmel IN junior Katie Harrington 10:31.70, who was doubling just 2 hours after the mile, closed ground late to finish within 4 seconds of Blood and looking fresher. "I probably let her get too big a lead," Harrington said. Both beat Megan Kaltenbach's winning times the past two years (10:32.89 in 2001 and 10:37.86 in 2002). Although scratching from the mile, Blood had a strenuous outing Saturday when she anchored Saratoga's 4xMile relay to within a second of Rockford MI's national record. After that race, Blood was adamant that she wasn't worried about big races on back to back days. "I just worry about today's race," she said. "Then I focus on tomorrow."

Smoky Hill Aurora CO sophomore Katelyn Kaltenbach 10:49.69 couldn't keep the 2-mile title in the family (big sister Megan switched to the mile this year), but ran very respectably in third, just ahead of Hickory VA sr Jennifer Boyd 10:51.97, a double distance champion in the Virginia AAA state meet. Louisville KY soph Carmen Mims also finished under 11 minutes at 10:59.24. Wake Forest NC freshman Katie Albright, the sensation of the Foot Locker South region when she won the freshman race in the day's fastest overall time, was 8th in 11:09.61.

After scratching from the mile earlier, Saratoga NY freshman Nicole Blood
appeared the favorite, leading from the beginning of the race. She went
out to the early lead followed by Jennifer Boyd VA and Shanna Sparks
NV. By 1000 meters, Blood had a clear gap on the field, while moving up in
the pack were Katie Harrington IN, doubling back from the mile two hours
earlier, and Katelyn Kaltenbach CO. At the mile, Blood was at a strong and
ambitious 5:08 but looking strained, with Harrington about 5 seconds behind
her. By a mile and a half, the top three spots were secured, with about 30
meters separating Blood and Harrington, and another 30 back to
Kaltenbach. In the last 800, Harrington began to close the gap on the
tiring Blood, but would not be able to make up the gap. Blood finished in
10:27 with Harrington only 4 seconds behind, and Kaltenbach a distant third
in 10:49.

Melissa Sue Trauscht, another member of the talent-packed Saratoga Springs, N.Y. roster, took the 8:25 a.m. unseeded section in 11:12.08 with teammates Karyn Delay (11:25.03) and Catherine Rossi (11:31.77) going 3-4, just back of Chambersburg, Pa.’s Kylee Schuler (11:12.08.)

At 2:45 p.m, the seeded 16-lappers took over.

And now it was time for Saratoga Springs, N.Y. freshman Nicole Blood to take over. Again.

She’d won the Verizon Millrose Games mile at Madison Square Garden a month ago and she’d split a 4:54.9 mile anchoring the Springs to the Nike DM crown Saturday.

The 16-lapper (plus a bit) boiled down to a Blood-Katie Harrington duel as they left the rest of the 14-runner field spread around the 200-meter oval.

Blood simply was too tough to handle, powering to a 10:27.61 triumph that put her just 3.98 seconds off the National indoor frosh record (10:23.63 by Californian Carol Henry in 2000.)

Harrington, the Carmel, Indiana junior, settled for second in 10:31.70.

Best of the rest were Katelyn Kaltenbach, the Aurora, Colorado sophomore (10:49.69) an Jennifer Boyd, the Chesapeake, Va. senior (10:51.97.)
Carmen Mims of Louisville at 10:59.24 was the only other sub-11.
Left unchallenged one more time was Melody Fairchild’s national record, 9:55.92, dating back to 1991.
