I have recently read your piece "The Hellacious Hills of Hereford"
where you
call it the toughest three miles in cross country. However, I feel
it is my
responsibility to let you know my opinion. In Camas, Washington
we run a
3.05 mile course that features hills that rival "The Dip."
Our course is at a local park, and it is run through trails in
the woods
around a lake. We begin up a small hill. Then, for the next .25
mile or so
you wind through widening and narrowing trails with ups and downs
the whole
way. Then, comes our real hill. First you charge up the hill (probably
only about half as bad as "The Dip") but then, you make
a right turn and
head up another hill, that's just as bad as the first. The trail
takes you
down a hill this time, then back up another, and once again, you
make a
turn, and there's another hill. Soon after, you head down a gravel
road
which is largely downhill with some flats here and there. then,
you have
more dipping, up and down hills until you reach the start/finish,
and you do
it again.
You see, my idea is, that the hills at our course is more difficult
because
in the dip, you have a huge downhill prior to going back up. This
downhill
not only gives you a recovery, but it also give you some momentum
going back
up.
I have the 13th fastest all time mark for our course, it's only
19:27.
Further, the course record is only 17:31. This record is held by
Jon Zehe
(3rd Place 3A Washington state meet 2001). So he's no slouch when
it comes
to cross country.
I thought you'd like to know about our course. Thank you.
