Boys

1. Royal, Simi  Valley
The state's deepest team relied on that luxury to come away with victory at the season-opening Seaside Invitational on a flat but very windy 3.05-mile course, despite resting out its #2 and #3 scorers as they tended to nearly healed injuries. The meet was contested by grades, with senior Dylan Jaedtke winning his race in the fastes time of the day and the Highlanders placing 4 of the top 8 in the sophomore-class race.

2. Don Lugo, Chino
Rumors of injury to frontrunner Fitsum Tesfa go unfounded as the senior wins handily at the season-opening Colton Invitational, winning the senior class race by a whopping 81 seconds. Teammate Alfred "Stomps" Gonzalez wins junior class race in 15:11. All told, Don Lugo posted a meet-record 79:54 team time despite temperatures in the 90's. Not much competition was here, with Don Lugo the only participating team being ranked on the CIF-Southern Section Divisional poll.

3. Canyon, Canyon Country
Placed second at the season-opening Seaside Invitational, enduring brisk winds to be within 62 seconds of #5-ranked natinoally Royal, a group which was sitting out its #2 and #3 runners. Appears Canyon was without two of its scorers (#2 and #5) as well.

4. Murrieta Valley, Murrieta
Reportedly rested out its top four individuals at the season-opening Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Invitational. Telling sign might have been that its top finisher (its #5-?) placed 19th in the varsity boys race, with Ayala of Chino Hills placing 6 runners in front of this person.

5. Madera (Central)
Looking very, very tough yet again in September. One report indiacted they are doing very well despite being shorthanded (two injuries). Program has admittedly had mild problems in late season in past years after grinding in the early months. Here's hoping they gauge their efforts properly this time. Great developing darkhorse for the end of the season. Very deep squad.

6. North Monterey County, Castroville
With top runner and All-American candidate Nathan Huerta sidelined by an IT band injury, the Condors had others step up very nicely wo put the pressure on Madera at its own NMC meet. with Huerta resuming training at the start of this week, North Monterey Couinty could be a dangerous mover up the charts!

7. El Camino, Oceanside
Will run by grade at this weekend's Mt. Carmel Invitational, its first true race of the season.

8. Dana Hills, Dana Point

Already an ultimate low-key boys team each September, the group went to the very low key Millikan Invitational, where it competed by grades. With very limited results forwarded from there, notjing subtantial can be reported new on them in terms of team ranking.

9. Ayala, Chino Hills
Was seeking a challenge at the season-opening Bronco Invitational, but traidtional participants Don Lugo (went to another meet) and Murrieta Valley (rested its top four) did not show their cards, leavcing the Bulldogs to almost dominate. A 36-second scoring gap and a nice team time of a course running similar to Woodward Park is a very encouraging early sign.

10. Jesuit, Carmichael
ROCKLIN THUNDER INVITATIONAL @ Springview/Johnson Park
5k - mostly flat and quick

After having definite rocky points over the final mile of their season opener the week before, the Marauders regrouped well this week. It also appears they may have worked on some pack running here, with five team members within a four-second gap at the finish. A young squad that will be very interesting to watch as the season unfolds.
