Expanded Report from Yankton Head Coach Dan Fitzsimmons

Bies breaks Ramsey Kavan’s all-time course record to become only the second runner to break 15:26 on the challenging hilly course. Kuchta and Storm ran the 9th and 10th best times in course history – just ahead of Annie Shadle, the indoor mile and outdoor 1500 NCAA champion from Nebraska. All seven Gazelles ran their best times ever on the course. They outscored our last year’s team 24-34 in a dual when doing a time comparison from last year to this year. Bies has broken 3 of 4 course records that Kavan held going into this season. The Gazelles average team time was faster than the 11th fastest performer in course history and faster than 19 of the past meet champions.

On the boys side, winner Jon Williams broke a school record held by Yankton HS and Notre Dame alum, Matt Althoff, by 24 seconds. His time was the fourth fastest all-time on the course, which has been used for late season state qualifying meets as well. Althoff captained ND for two years and made four national cross country appearance. A much healthier Sean Fitzsimmons returned to the number 2 spot in the Bucks lineup after suffering from what could have been a near fatal respiratory attack at the Augustana Meet of Champions. Hopefully he will regain full strength soon and return to running side by side with Williams. All seven of our boys set personal bests for the Norfolk course. Also we had five runners in before Peter Falcon of Bellevue West and 6 in before Bellevue West’s second runner. Falcon had beat all but two Shawnee Mission NW runners while their 2nd and 3rd runners finished ahead of Shawnee’s fifth runner by 27 seconds. Our seventh, who ran 2nd for us at Augustana, suffered an asthma attack and still managed to PR and finish one second behind Bellevue’s third runner. The Bucks average team time for the meet was faster than over half of the past individual champions times on this course, which has seen the likes of NCAA Division I runners Matt Althoff, Brian Parr, David Iteffa and others on the course. Iteffa, a Univ. of Nebraska standout, held the course record at one time in 16:58 – the Bucks average time on the day.
