34th Luther College Invitational @ Luther College, Decorah 9/11/05

HL#3/US#16 Iowa City West girls packed five runners into the top twenty-five scorers to win the Luther College Invitational, Iowa's largest regular season Invitational. Teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota also competed. West scored 55 points.. Johnston was second with 83 points, with Kennedy, Cedar Rapids third with 99. Pleasant Valley (136) and Decorah (153) rounded out the top five. In a meeting of the last two Iowa state individual champs, Hannah Roeder (Roosevelt, Des Moines) pulled away from Sarah Wickman (Iowa City West) to win 15;06 to 15:21 over a 4k course described as long. Claire Hall finished third for Iowa City West (15:33) with Kelsey Bulat (Pleasant Valley 15:38) and Andrea Wacker (Kennedy, Cedar Rapids 15:39) in fifth.

Pleasant Valley packed three runners in 5-6-7 to win the boys title with 62 points, with HL#10 Kennedy, Cedar Rapids second with 74, edging Roosevelt, Des Moines (75). Park Center (111) was fourth and Platteville (170) fifth. Jordan Anderson (Mason City) was a solid victor in the boys race, running 16;02 for 5k, with teammate Clayton Carper second (16:29). Ryan Williamson (Kennedy, Cedar Rapids) was third in 16;33, with Anthony Okee (Roosevelt, Des Moines) fourth at 16:40 and Jordan Lang (Pleasant Valley) fifth at 16;46.

KANSAS
Emporia Invitational @ Jones Park, Emporia 9/10/05

St. Thomas Aquinas, Overland Park, ranked #1 in 6A and defending state champ, packed three girls into the top ten and rolled to victory at the Emporia Invitational Saturday. Aquinas scored 57, with Lawrence second (79), edging Manhattan (81). Olathe South freshman Kelli Russell pulled away late to win in 11:59 over two miles from Michaela Reynolds of host Emporia (12:05). Kelly Renfro (Lawrence 12:43), Marley Crusch (Manhattan 12:49) and Alyssa Belinder (Aquinas 12:54) rounded out the top five.

In the boy's race Skyler Delmot (16:10 5k) pulled away from teammate Mauricio Morales (17:02) to give Emporia a 1-2 start to their winning total of 63. Mike Partridge of Olathe South was third in 17:18, with Matt Bilhimer (Shawnee Heights, Topeka 17;27) and Curtis Feltner (Manhattan 17:38) rounding out the top five. Emporia was followed in the team scoring by Lawrence in second (73) and Manhattan in third (98)

Topeka West Invitational @ Stateland XC Course, Topeka 9/11/05

Shawnee Mission South packed four runners into the top ten to win the girl's title at the Topeka West Invitational. The Raiders scored 44 points to edge defending 5A state champ Seaman, Topeka (56). Shawnee Mission East was third with 82 points. Seaman was without #1 runner Autumn Kidwell, held out as precaution after injuring her hamstring. Junction City got a 1-2 performance in the girls race with Tamera Smith (12:39 2 miles) and Erica Testa (12:58) with Shawnee Mission South duo of Hayley Beggs (13:06) and Valerie Lynde (13:09) third and fourth and Sydney Messic (Seaman) fifth at 13:09.

Junction City rolled to the boy's team title with 41 points and three runners in the top ten. Shawnee Mission East was second with 61 points, and Shawnee Mission South third with 65. Tim Testa led Junction City, winning in 17:34 over the hilly 5k, with John McCormick of Shawnee Mission East second in 17:55 and Clay Schneider (Seaman, Topeka) third at 17:59.

Wamego Invitational @ Wamego Golf Course 9/11/05
Traditionally the state's premier Invite for small and mid-size Kansas schools, the Wamego Invitational brings together teams from across Kansas to compete at the classes 4A-3A-2A-1A state meet site.

4A BOYS: One team comes to mine when you talk about 4A boys in Kansas: seven time defending state champ Baldwin. Coach Mike Spielman's team did nothing to give any hope the streak will end in 2005, putting five runners in the top fifteen to win with 51 points. El Dorado was second with 75, with Abilene (coached by Ken Russell, now in his 40th year of coaching the Cowboys cross country team) third with 111. Wamego (121) and DeSoto (135) were fourth and fifth.
Jake Orndorff (El Dorado) showed good strength over the hills of Wamego, pulling away to a 16:53 5k win. Tyler Fennema (Abiline) was second at 17:00 with Tyler Spreer (Wamego) third at 17:09. Kerek Mason (Goodland 17:10) and Bobby Morton (El Dorado 17:17) rounded out the top five.

4A GIRLS: El Dorado (90) and Baldwin (99) waged a title battle for the team title, with El Dorado edging ahead with a tighter pack. DeSoto was third (125) with Eurdora (127) and Wamego (136) close at fourth and fifth. Heather Garcia (Baldwin) pulled away late to win in 11:46 for two miles, with Brittney Graff (Eudora) second at 11:55. BreAnna Briggs (Wamego) was third at 12:00, with Laura Nightengale (El Dorado 12:05) and Jessica Stephens (Colby 12:11) fourth and fifth.

3A-2A-1A Boys: Hillsboro (80) and Northern Heights-Allen (81) waged an epic battle for the team title, with Hillsboro winning with tighter pack running after Northern Heights put four runners in the top sixteen finishers. Thomas More Prep, Hays (104) was third, with Jeff Co North, Winchester (133) fourth and Sabetha (141) fifth. In the individual race, TMP's Cole Ginther ran away from the field to win in 16:39, the fastest 5k of the day by 20 seconds. David Gibson (Blue Valley-Randolph) was second at 17:26, with Tyler Ginter (TMP) third at 17:45. Time Meahl (Northern Heights-Allen) was fourth at 18:03 and Nate Whalen (Wellsville) fifth at 18:12

3A-2A-1A GIRLS: Garry Sigle's Riley County girls team has had a long history of championship teams, and the this year's team seems especially dominant. The Falcons put six runners in the top fifteen scorers, led by individual champ Annie Martin (11:53 for 2 miles). Martin won by over a minute, and led Riley County to a 36 point total. Doniphan West, Highland was second with 118 points, edging Northern Heights, Allen (123) and Olpe (125). Pomona was fifth with 155.
Following in Martin's wake in the girl's race, Steph Bryant (Silver Lake) was second in 13:04, with Sharon Zeller (Olpe) third at 13:07. Hope Winkler (Sabetha 13:09) and Katie Henry (Riley County 13:22) were fourth and fifth.

MISSOURI

Blue Springs Invitational @ Lake Jacomo, Blue Springs 9/10/05 (Boys only report. Girls results not yet received)

Heartland #9 Blue Springs boys put four runners into the top ten at their home invite, and scored 37 points to handily win the Blue Springs Invite. Oak Park, Kansas City was second with 47 and Lee's Summit third with 82. Josh Rollins led Blue Springs, winning in 16:35 for 5k on a course noted for it's tactical nature. Stephen Ardoin of Lee's Summit was second at 16:54, with Matt Harris leading Oak Park in third (17:15). Brad Jochens (Lee's Summit) was fourth in 17:27 and Brian Binkley (Blue Springs 17:33) was fifth.

Stan Nelson Invitational @ Northwest Intermediate School, House Springs 9/10/05

Bethany Snow (Eureka) and Ben Brammeier (Parkway South, St. Louis) are figured to be two of the favorites this November at the Missouri State Championships, and showed why on a warm day at the Stan Nelson Invitational. Both ran to victory on the 2.65 mile course by large margins. In the girls race Snow simply ran to the front and covered the course in 15:41 to win by over a minute. Mary Nothum of Washington was second in 16:31, with Emily Baker (Lafayette, St. Louis 16:47), Meagan Hudson (Crystal City 16:54) and Courtney Ayers (Pattonville, St. Louis 17:07) completing the top five. Pattonville won the girls team title with 60 points, followed by Washington (79) and Lafeyette (87).

In the boy's race Brammeier ran 13:24 to win by over thirty seconds, with Eric Fernandez (Parkway West, St. Louis 13:58) second and Kirk Chitwood (Parkway South 14:12), Jamie Lee (Eureka 14:13) and Ryan Briggs (Parkway South14:14) rounding out the top five. Parkway South easily won the boy's team title with 42 points, with Pattonville second (91) and Parkway West third (101).

Perryville Invitational 9/10/05

John Boyd ran 16:35 for 5k to win the Perryville Invitational, and lead St. Genevieve to the boys team title. John Kippe (Cape Girardeau Central) was second at 16:44 and Jesse Kueker (Perryville 17:09) third. St. Genevieve scored 51 points to edge Cape Central (59), with Perryville (71) third. St. Genevieve also won the girls team title with 44 points, edging Herculaneum (49). Cape Central was third with 79. Jessica Bollinger led St. Genevieve, winning the 5k race in 19:20, with Kelly Williams of Herculaneum second at 19:35 and Allyssa Allison (Festus) third at 20:35.

MICDS Inivtiational @ MICDS HS, St. Louis 9/10/05

Bob Gorman ran to a 17:19 5k win and led Chaminade, St. Louis to the boys team title. Gorman was followed across the line by Andrew Tobben (Borgia, Washington 17:37) and Adam Behnke (Lutheran South, St. Louis 17:38) in second and third. Chaminade scored 65 to win, edging Priory, St. Louis (72) with Principia, St. Louis third 112. Molly Schambe of Ladue won the girls title with a 20:14 5k. Mary Goldkamp (McCluer North) was second at 20:57, just ahead of Sandy Inman (Notre Dame, St. Louis 20:50). Ladue won the girls title with 73 points, just ahead of Borgia's 79. MICDS was third with 144.
