6A highlights

6A Girls 3200: Alysha Valencia (Free State, Lawrence) followed her usual race plan in Saturday's opening event in 6A, the 3200. That plan? Mash the gas pedal, and go as hard as possible as long as possible. Valencia ripped through a 2:28 opener to destroy any hopes the field had of staying up, and cruised to a 10:50.68 win. Kristen Wolkey (Shawnee Mission North) stayed up front in the chase pack to take second at 11:23.19, while Jana Gwinn (Blue Valley North) pulled away late to run 11:28.25 for third. Tamera Smith (Junction City 11:36.64) and Haley Beggs (Shawnee Mission South 11:38.13) were also under 11:40.

6A Boys 3200: Shawnee Mission Northwest team mates Tucker Weems and Bret Imgrund set the early pace through the mile, while Maize's Alex Umberger stayed in the pack, darting in and out of traffic. Just after the mile, Umberger zipped past the SMNW duo and pulled away to win in 9:19.71, appearing totally in control. Nick Garcia (Emporia) moved up to place second at 9:32.77, with Imgrund third at 9:36.47, just ahead of Brock Phillips (Wichita East 9:37.41). Skyler Delmott (Emporia) just got Weems at the finish 9:45.68 to 9:46.37.

6A Girls 100H: Amy Magnuson (Lawrence) burst from the blocks and proceeded to run a flawless race to win the hurdles in 14.82. Erica Mings (Shawnee Mission Northwest) was second at 15.17, with Crystal Cunningham (Emporia) third at 15.31.

6A Boys 110H: Derrick Mims got the Olathe North state title express running with a narrow 14.34-14.37 win over Chris Allen (Wichita Northwest). Defending champion Brice Wilson (Heights, Wichita) was third in 14.49.

6A Girls 4 x 800: St. Thomas Aquinas, Overland Park and Garden City traded the lead on alternate legs in the 4 x 800, with Aquinas finally holding on for a 9:41.21 to 9:43.57 win. Emporia finished strongly with Layne Moore's anchor to take third in 9:47.80, with Blue Valley North fourth at 9:55.45.

6A Boys 4 x 800: Speed kills, and Heights, Wichita proved it in one of the day's most highly anticipated finals. Heights burst into the lead with an opener in the 1:55 range, and a 1:53 anchor from Tevas Everett closed a meet record 7:47.85. Free State, Lawrence, provided pressure throughout, including a 1:53.0 anchor from Danny Scheider and ran 7:50.99 in second. Emporia also broke 8:00 at 7:58.23, and Shawnee Mission Northwest ran 8:01.42 for fourth. Olathe South (8:04.11), and Aquinas (8:05.44) also scored in a deep race with eight under 8:10.

6A Girls 100: Freshman from Wichita ruled the day, with Sylvia Alexander (Wichita Southeast) moving late to win in 12.13, and Audacia Moore (Heights, Wichita) second at 12.21. Deangela McDougald (Junction City) was third in 12.27 with Lexi Beaudet (Hutchinson) fourth at 12.44

6A Boys 100: Olathe East's Dee Bell fired first from the blocks, but was overhauled midway by Bryce Perry (Maize) and Randy Shepard (Olathe North). Perry held on to win in 10.68 with Shepard second at 10.75. Bell took third at 10.85 with Mike Myer (Shawnee Mission West) also under 11.00 at 10.97.

6A Girls 1600: Alysha Valencia (Free State, Lawrence) again burst into the lead, but there was no denying Blue Valley Northwest freshman Laura Roxberg. Roxberg moved into the lead and kicked off to a 5:00.85 win. Valencia hung tough to run 5;05.33 in second, with Lauren Bonds (Hutchinson) closing fast for third in 5;06.88. Kristen Wolkey (Shawneee Mission North) ran 5;19.35 for fourth.

6A Boys 1600: A tactical race turned into a barn-burner with 600 to go, as Danny Schneider (Free State, Lawrence) moved away to win in 4:22.72. Shea Camien (Emporia) was second at 4:26.77 and Matt Morton (Shawnee Mission Northwest) third at 4:26.07. Alex Umberger (Maize 4:27.06), Tad Eisenhauer (Goddard 4:27.98) and Nick Garcia (Emporia 4:29.14) finished out the top six in a race that saw place six through thirteen finish in a within six seconds.

6A Girls 4 x 100: Another highly anticipated final saw Wichita Southeast dominate the race from gun to finish, running 48.02 to win. Leavenworth was second at 48.76, with Garden City (49.49), Maize (49.64) and Junction City (49.76) all under 50.00.

6A Boys 4 x 100: Olathe North began their stretch run to the team title, winning solidly here with fast running and crisp passing. North ran 42.03 to win, with Leavenworth (42.49) and Free State, Lawrence (42.82) under 43.00 in 2-3.

6A Girls 400: In one of the fastest and toughest events of the day, Deangela McDougald (Junction City) and Charity Stowers (Leavenworth) hammered each other and left fans with a race for the ages. McDougald held on for a 55.66 win, with Stowers second at 55.98. Kendra Bradley (Leavenworth) ran 57.81 for third with Laura Smith (Blue Valley Northwest) also under 59.00 at 58.20.

6A Boys 400: Derby's Justin Cole dominated this race, winning in 48.94. Cole's season long rival Tevan Everett (Heights, Wichita) was second at 49.81, with Ramone Lowe (Junction City 50.22) edging Rodney Hunt (Wichita North 50.35) for third.

6A Girls 300H: DeSerae Griffin (Wichita Southeast) showed good strength in the homestretch to win in 45.61. Natalie Kolarick (Hutchinson) was a clear second at 46.26 while Kristen Ehrlick (Shawnee Mission Northwest 46.70) edged Alejandra Gomez (Dodge City 46.77) for third.

6A Boys 300H: Derrick Mims moved Olathe North to an unbeatable team lead, winning his third title (110H, 4 x 100 previous) of the day with a 38.97 win. Anthony Brown (Garden City) was second at 39.52 and Alex Evans (Emporia) third at 39.92.

6A Girls 800: Blue Valley Northwest's Laura Roxberg looked just as masterful here as in the 1600, cruising away in the homestretch to win in 2:14.98. Lauren Bonds (Hutchinso) was second at 2:17.14 while Layne Moore (Emporia) ran 2:20.06 to edge Kristen Wolkey (Shawnee Mission Northwest 2:20.39) for third.

6A Boys 800: A high school All-American last year, Jason Collett (Aquinas, Overland Park) dominated the field, winning in 1:54.91. Zach Schultz (Garden City) ran 1:57.17 for second, while Danny Schneider (Free State, Lawrence 1:58.08) edged Josh Wayland (Olathe South 1:58.42) in a tight battle for third.

6A Girls 200: Deangela McDougald (Junction City) showed fine speed, roaring to a 25.08 win against a 3mps wind. Charity Stowers (Leavenworth) was second in 25.47, ahead of a tight pack fo Allante Garrett (Wichita Southeast 25.54), Kendra Bradley (Leavenworth 25.60) and Lexi Beaudet (Hutchinson 25.88).

6A Boys 200: Randy Shepard (Olathe North) zipped off the turn and showed great strength into the wind to win in 22.03, with Bryce Perry (Maize) second at 22.13. Mike Myer (Shawnee Mission West) was third at 22.52.

6A Girls 4 x 400: Leavenworth clinched their state title with a 3:57.90 win in their flagship event the 4 x 400. Hutchinson (4:01.87), Junction City (4:02.71) and Garden City (4:04.35) waged a tight battle for second as all eight finalists ran under 4:10.

6A Boys 4 x 400: Heights, Wichita ran away from the field to win in 3:20.82, with Olathe North (3:24.96) edging Junction City (3:25.21), and Shawnee Mission Northwest (3:25.43) for second.

6A Girls Javelin: Caitlin Moser (Garden City) threw 124-6 on her first attempt, and 122-0 on her second, which proved critical. Lauren Busch (Shawnee Mission South) threw 124-6 on her first throw of the finals, but Moser's second toss held up to give her the win. Allison Mayfield (Aquinas, Overland Park) was third at 120-9

6A Boys High Jump: Derby's Justin Taylor cleared 6-6 to win from a crowded field. Kelly Roberts (Hutchinson) and JoJo Scott (Shawnee Mission South) tied for second at 6-4, with Reilly McKay (Goddard fourth), Dan Cowan (Aquinas 5th) and Nick Foster (Blue Valley North 6th) also clearing 6-4.

6A Girls Long Jump: Another competition with big marks and big depth. Lataish Brown (Garden City, first 18-10) and Lexi Beaudet (Hutchinson, second 18-7.25) combined for eight fair jumps over 18-0!! Jennifer Franklin (Shawnee Mission East 17-7), VaShunta Johnson (Leavenworth 17-4), Julia Cummings (Shawnee Mission South 17-1.75) and Janet Simpson (Olathe North 17-1) all went over 17 feet.

6A Boys Javelin: Kyle Komarek (Shawnee Mission South) put five throws over 190 feet, topped out by a second round 206-7. Roger Thomas (Leavenworth 187-3), Mike Garrison (Shawnee Mission Northwest 183-7) and Craig Ross (Olathe South 181-11) also went over 180.

6A Girls Triple Jump: Olathe East's Danielle McCray won her third gold medal of the meet, adding the triple jump crown to the shot and disc titles she picked up Friday. McCray went 36-10.5 on her final attempt to win from Amy Magnuson (Lawrence 36-8.5). Natalie Kolarik (Hutchinson) wsa third at 36-7.5 and Erica Mings (Shawnee Mission Northwest) fourth at 36-0.5.

6A Boys Shot Put: Scott Penny (Lawrence) threw 52-5.75 to take a narrow victory from Brent Sensenich (Olathe North 52-4). Paul Wallace (Garden City) was third at 50-7.5 and Tyler Graham (Hutchinson) fourth at 50-4.25.
