5A highlights

Girls 5A 3200: Courtney Johnson (Kapaun Mt.Carmel, Wichita) smoothly moved to the lead early on, and proceeded to run a relaxed looking 11:19.33 to win. Team mate Ryan Ayres was second at 11:47.94, with Alley DiCapo (Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission 11:52.36) and Kara Windisch (Blue Valley West 11:55.11) under 12:00 in 3-4.

Boys 5A 3200: This race seemed tactical early on, but then Nick Nowack (McPherson) took the lead and turned it into a barn-burner! Nowack moved away to win in 9:36.35, with Danny Rice (Carroll, Wichita) moving late into a close second in 9:41.50. Early leader Amr Abualnadi (Blue Valley 9:54.95) held third from Ben Histand (Newton 9:55.53) and Scott Thompson (Salina South 9:55.95).

Girls 5A 100H: Melesa Johnson (Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission) zipped to front early and ran to a clear win in 14.72. Abri Houser (Newton) was second at 15.21 and Lakisha Lane (Highland Park, Topeka) third at 15.35.

Boys 5A 110H: Jared Huske (Highland Park, Topeka) continued his season long trend, dominating this race and winning in 14.10. Jake Pierce (Carroll, Wichita) was a fast second at 14.98, with Conner Morton (Topeka West 15.22) and Robbie Hephner (Campus, Haysville 15.34) running third and fourth.

Girls 5A 4 x 800: Continuing a string of deep, fast 4 x 8's in this meet, Kaupan-Mt.Carmel of Wichita ran 9:45.54 to hold off Paola (9:46.61) and win. Hays (9:49.15), McPherson (9:53.93) and Mill Valley ,Shawnee (9:54.21) were also under the 9:55 mark.

Boys 5A 4 x 800: Garnder-Edgerton ran 8:04.91 to handily win this race, with Carroll, Wichita a clear second at 8:08.13. Kaupan Mt.Carmel, Wichita (8:17.13) and Hays (8:17.98) waged a tight battle for the bronze.

Girls 5A 100: Victoria Howard (Blue Valley West 12.06) and Shallisa Williams (Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission 12.13) waged a stirring battle for the 100 crown, with Howard pulling away at the end. Trolisa Williams (Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission) was third in 12.34, an Kyle Covey (Valley Center) fourth at 12.44.

Boys 5A 100: Odell Harris (Wichita West) burst clear of the filed to win in 10.68. Jake Sharp (Salina Central) was second at 10.81, with Jared Huske (Highland Park, Topeka) third in 10.90 and Darrell Stucky (Washington, Kansas City) fourth at 11.00

Girls 5A 1600: Calli George (Gardner-Edgerton) used an interesting race plan by quickly breaking to the front. When Kapuan-Mt.Carmel, Wichita's Courtney Johnson began to pressure on the third lap, George simply loped away on the final 400 to win in 5:11.39. Johnson was second at 5:20.20, holding off hard-charging Autumn Kidwell (Seaman, Topeka 5:21.0.2)

Boys 5A 1600: Danny Rice (Carroll, Wichita) kicked away from a tight pack to win in 4:27.00, with Nick Nowack (McPherson) second at 4:27.85, Gautama Dandu (Salina South) third at 4:28.93 and Dustin Toland (Ottawa) fourtn at 4:30.95

Girls 5A 4 x 100: Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission jetted around the track to a dominating 48.88, winning by over a second. Blue Valley West (50.20) and Topeka West (50.48) followed in second and third.

Boys 5A 4 x 100: The boys 5A race proved to be as tight as the girls was a rout. Ottawa ran 43.36 to edge Schlage, Kansas City by .01 seconds in a finish that left the crowd gasping. Carroll, Wichita ran 43.51 for a close third.

Girls 5A 400: Alicia Newberry (Shawnee Heights, Topeka) ran 57.49 and held off Shallisa Williams (Bishop Miege, Shawnee Mission 58.17) to take the title. Trichelle Heard (Wyandotte, Kansas City) was third at 58.99.

Boys 5A 400: Nate Thiesfeld (Gardner-Edgerton) first opened eyes a month ago with a brilliant anchor at the Shawnee Mission North Relays, and showed that same closing speed here to win in 49.60. Shane Torgler (Kaupan Mt. Carmel, Wichita freshman) was second at 50.17, with Greg Lott (Seaman, Topeka 50.38) and Vashon Perryman (Ottawa 50.77) next.

Girls 5A 300H: Melesa Johnson (Miege, Shawnee Mission) won her second hurdle title of the meet with at narrow 46.03 to 46.10 win over Takeisha Jenkins (Lansing). Abri Houser (Newton) was third (46.52) and Hayley Charles (Hays) fourth (46.69).

Boys 5A 300H: Jared Huske (Highland Park, Topeka has dominated hurdling in Kansas the last two years, and once again wowed the crowd with a brilliant 37.70 win. Jake Pierce (Carroll, Wichita) was second at 39.66 and Marco Jones (Wichita West) third at 40.63.

Girls 5A 800: Sara Karcher (Mill Valley, Shawnee) moved well down the homestretch to win a deep race in 2:19.87. 1600 champ Cali George (Gardner-Edgerton) was second at 2:21.51, just ahead of Emily Dittemore (Kapuan Mt. Carmel, Wichita 2:21.74), with Danielle Houltberg (Salina South 2:22.37) and Kayla Stout (McPherson 2:22.47) very close.

Boys 5A 800: Defending champ Jack Sachse (Ottawa) again dominated the 800, winning big in 1:56.29. Aaron Trigg (Blue Valley West) was second at 1:58.44, with Derek George (Gardner-Edgerton 1:59.30) and Jordan Edwards (Salina South 1:59.90) also under 2:00.

Girls 5A 200: Chrisdell Harris (Wichita West) blew down the homestretch into a headwind to win in 25.38. Victoria Howard (Blue Valley West 25.70) and Lakisha Lane (Highland Park, Topeka 25.99) also went under 26 seconds in second and third.

Boys 5A 200: In a big-dog matchup of stars, Odell Harris (Wichita West) matched sister Chrisdell's win, running 21.96 into the wind. Hurdle star Jared Huske (Highland Park, Topeka) was second at 22.26 and Jake Sharp (Salina Central) third at 22.54.

Girls 5A 4 x 400: Hays ran to a clear victory with a 4:04.58. Kaupan-Mt.Carmel, Wichita (4:07.09) and McPherson (4:07.89) waged a tight homestretch figh for second with the Crusaders prevailing.

Boys 5A 4 x 400: Eastern Kansas rivals Gardner-Edgerton and Ottawa staged a season long series of tight 4 x 400 races, and got another at state. Gardern prevailed, running 3:23.25 to just shade Ottawa's 3:23.41. Great Bend was third at 3:26.53, just ahead of Blue Valley West (3:27.07)

Girls 5A Shot Put; Janae Voelker (Newton) put five puts beyond 40 feet, and won with a throw of 42-7.75. Larissa Richards (Great Bend) was second at 41-4.5, with Tiffany Turner (Lansing 39-2.75), Nastashia Caffey (Liberal 38-10.75) and Terri Anderson (Campus, Haysville 38-7.75) following in the deep field.

Boys 5A Long Jump: Salina Central's Jake Sharp jumped 22-8.25 to win by almost a foot. Brandon Wegner (Seaman, Topeka 21-9) and Dusty Loyd (Blue Valley West 21-9) followed in second and third.

Girls 5A Triple Jump: Sasha Spann (Highland Park, Topeka) continued her domination of Kansas triple jumping, leaping 41-2.5 to win, with two other jumps at 40-0 or better. Chrisdell Harris (Wichita West) was second at 37-3.5 and Abbey Stockstill (McPherson) third at 35-3.5

Boys 5A Pole VAult: Zach Steffen (Carroll, Wichita) vaulted 14-8 to dominate the 5A Vault. Justin Bowen (Gardner-Edgerton) and Sam Browning (Paola) tied for second at 13-6, with Matt Wyckoff (Gardner-Edgerton) took fourth and Tony Johnson (Blue Valley West) took fifth, also at 13-6.

Boys 5A Discus: Bryan Tapia (Winfield) launched a 170-11 toss in his fifth throw to win. Jordan Karr (Paola) was second t 168-4 with four tosses over 160, and Kyle Younger (Hays) was third at 165-5 with five over 160.

Girls 5A High Jump: Rachael Stevens (McPherson) cleared 5-4 to win the high jump from a tight pack. Angel Ilouno (Harmon, Kansas City) and Jessica Pendleton (Gardner-Edgerton) tied for second at 5-2 and Becca Birzer (Blue Valley West) was fourth, also clearing 5-2.

Boys 5A Javelin: Iain Trimble (Shawnee Heights, Topeka) threw 186-5 to win a tight competition from Luke Laird (Gardner-Edgerton 183-1). Cole Zenisek (Kapuan-Mt.Carmel, Wichita) was third at `176-6 and Brad Spencer (Ottawa) fourtn at 175-8.
