3A highlights

3A Girls 3200:  Leah Thompson (Lyons) ran 11:56.57 to win, and held off the late kick of runner-up Tera Keim (Holcomb 11:58.13).  Katie Henry (Riley County) was third at 12:14.41. 
 
3A Boys 3200:  Lane Boyer (Fredonia) moved away from the pack at mid-race and powered to a brilliant 9:22.65 win.  Cole Ginther (TMP-Marian, Hays) held with Boyer until about an 800 to go and was rewarded with a 9:40.95 second.  His twin Tyler Ginther (TMP-Marian, Hays) was third at 9:59.10.
 
3A Girls 100H:  Katie Guevel (Burlington) sizzled to a new 3A record 14.82 with Julianne Chisholm (Hillsboro) second at 15.22.  Susie McGraw (Riley County) ran 15.40 to edge Darcy Jennings (Lakin 15.42) for third.
 
3A Boys 110H:  Nathaniel Porter (Fredonia) ran 15.52 and edged Kenton Lonberger (Minneapolis 15.56) for the title.  Drew Zimmerman (Rock Creek, St. George) was a close third with a 15.66, just ahead of Jed Ricke (Medicine Lodge 15.69).
 
3A Girls 4 x 800:  Garden Plain ran to a solid victory in 10:01.49, with Fredonia second at 10:05.45.  Eureka was third at 10:13.3.
 
3A Boys 4 x 800:  Northern Heights, Allen pulled away mid-race to win in 8:09.34, with Ellsworth second at 8:12.15 and Southeast of Saline, Gypsum third at 8:15.93.
 
3A Girls 100:  Katie Guevel (Burlington) ran a quick 12.20 to win her second title of the day, with Kimberly Haberman (TMP-Marian, Hays) second at 12.49 and Brooke Kent (Southeast of Saline, Gypsum) third at 12.54.
 
3A Boys 100: Richard Cairns (Independent, Wichita) moved away from the field to win in 10.94, with Eric Matthews (Conway Springs) second at 11.14, just ahead of Ryan Mortimer (Minneapolis 11.19).
 
3A Girls 1600:   Cori Christensen (Medicine Lodge) moved late to win in 5:16.11, with Leah Thompson (Lyons) second at 5:24.32 and Hope Winkler (Sabetha) third at 5:25.13.
 
3A Boys 1600:  Lane Boyer (Fredonia) appeared to have this race well in hand, but in the last 100 Vincent Reel (Chaparral, Anthony-Harper) shifted into high gear to sprint past and win in 4:26.96 to Boyer's 4:28.28.  Coel Ginther (TMP-Marian, Hays) was third at 4:33.25.
 
3A Girls 4 x 100: Independent, Wichita used the team of Kelly Dixon, Sierra Grant, Chyna McRae and Lynnsey Nichols to sprint to a new 3A record 49.31 and  a huge win.  Southeast of Saline, Gypsum was second at 50.69 and Wellsville third at 51.02.
 
3A Boys 4 x 100:  Independent, Wichita went two-for-two with the 4 x 100 state records, blasting a 3A record 43.11 to win.  Minneapolis was second at 43.59 and Conway Springs third at 43.92. 
 
3A Girls 400:  Kelli Kopper (Cimarron) ran a 58.39 and held off Cori Christensen (Medicine Lodge 58.89) to win.  Haley Mendicki (Frontenac) was third at 59.82.
 
3A Boys 400:  Minneapolis' Jeff Doering looked totally in control running a 49.91 to win.  Brent Schneider (Sterling) was a clear second at 50.75, with Colby Dougals (Southeast of Saline, Gypsum) running 51.71 to hold off the freshman duo of Steven Fankhauser (Sterling 51.75) and Jase Hartenbower (Riley County 51.77) for third.
 
 3A Girls 300H:  Julia Chisholm (Hillsboro) cruised over the hurdles in a fast 45.99 to win, with Jaymee Cummins (Cherokee-Southeast) second at 46.55 and Darcy Jennings (Lakin) third at 47.00.
 
3A Boys 300H:  Nathaniel Porter (Fredonia) completed his hurdles sweep, running 40.27 for first.  Kenton Lonberger (Minneapolis) was at 40.98 and Matt Olson (Maranatha, Shawnee) third at 41.22.
 
3A Girls 800:  Medicine Lodge freshman Cori Christensen won her second title with a 2:19.65.  Kelli Kopper (Cimarron) was second at 2:21.69 and Esmeralda Ibarra (Eureka) third at 2:24.19.
 
3A Boys 800:  Andy Nichols (Kansas City Christian, Prarie Village) cruised to a commanding 1:57.18 win, with Todd Eirzmann (Belleville 1:59.63) and John VanGundy (Northern Heights, Allen 2:00.13) taking the silver and bronze.
 
3A Girls 200: Katie Guevel (Burlington) took her third gold medal of the day with a 25.80 win against the wind.  Kimberly Haberman (TMP-Marian, Hays) was second at 26.34, just ahead of third place Sierra Grant (Independent, Wichita 26.40).
 
3A Boys 200:  Richard Cairns (Independent, Wichita) sprinted to an against the wind 22.74 win, with Eric Matthews (Conway Springs) second at 22.96 in a tight race with the Minneapolis duo of Ryan Mortimer (23.02) and Jeff Doering (23.09). 
 
3A Girls 4 x 400:  Hillsboro ran off to win in 4:04.91, with Independent, Wichita (4:06.50) and Garden Plain (4:09.57) second and third.
 
3A Boys 4 x 400:  Minneapolis ran a 3:25.35 to get a clear win, with Southeast of Saline, Gypsum second at 3:27.84.  Northern Heights, Allen ran 3:29.33 to edge Ellsworth (3:29.52) for third.
 
3A Boys Pole Vault:  David Funk (Hillsboro) thrilled an attentive crowd with a 14-8 clearance to win over Shelby Lamb (Beloit 14-0).  Nate McKeee (Halstead) took third on misses with Cody Thomas (Riverton) fourth, both at 13-6.
 
3A Boys Discus:  Perhaps the best performance of the entire six class state meet came outside the stadium in the 3A discus.  Eric Thomas, a TMP-Marian, Hays junior, opened up with a winning throw and 3A state mark of 199-7.  Thomas then threw a series of 189-9, 187-7. 191-7, foul, and 191-7 to totally rule the event.  Kyle Linderman (Riley County) was second at 160-5,and Sean Teter (Garden Plain) was third at 156-11.
 
3A Girls High Jump:  Julianne Chisholm (Hillsboro) jumped 5-6 to win by four inches, with Kelly Fields (Northern Heights, Allen), Michelle Mitchell (Garden Plain) and Janelle Cole (Yates Center) going 2-3-4, all at 5-2.
 
3A Boys Javelin:  Harry Ruzicka (Independent, Wichita) threw 192-4 on his first throw of the finals to take the win.  Myles Jennings (Garden Plain) was second at 182-9.  James Stallbaumer (Nemaha Valley, Seneca) threw 174-0 for the bronze in a close competition with Micheal Christopher (Silver Lake 173-0) and Aric Schwindt (Pleasant Ridge, Easton 172-5).
 
3A Girls Long Jump: Hannah Marsh (Hillsboro) jumped 17-9.75 to win, and had five jumps over 17.  Lynnsey Nichols (Independent, Wichita) was second at 17-4 and Kelsey Martin (Holcomb) third  at 17-3.25.
