1. Roosevelt Des Moines IA--A narrow 3rd at the Luther Invitational with a 1-2-15 finish from their top three, but Kennedy Cedar Rapids IA and Pleasant Valley have better depth.

4. Stillwater MN--2nd Friday at the Faribault Invitational at Rice County Fairground with 100 points to Eden Prarie (51) Joe Moore led team with a 16;02 5k 4th place finish. Winner was Elliot Heath (Winona 15:42).

5. Shawnee Mission Northwest KS--Led by individual champ Tucker Weems (16:20), they won the Millard South meet in Omaha with 49 points, Free State Lawrence KS (ranked #3 KS) second with 59

6. Blue Springs MO--no results found or received. Varsity probably took weekend off to prepare for Rimrock.

8. Stevens Rapid City SD--Won the Augustana Meet of Champions with 35 points, running 4th Marshall Kambestad 17;49, 5th Alex Whitesell 17:51, 7th Alex Holmgren 18:08, 9th Matt McKie 18:20 and 10th Brandon Peterson 18:20 on a course described as "hilly". Beat a 14 team field with HL #10 Yankton second.

9. Kearney NE--dominated their home invite Thursday with 28 points in defeating several Lincoln NE powers.

7. Marian Omaha NE--Won the Millard South meet handily in Omaha with 49 points, led by runner-up finisher Katie Kelley (15:49 4k on a course described as "tough".)

8. Marquette MO--Won the 38 team Mark Finley Invitational @ McCluer HS in St. Louis, placing four runners in the top fifteen for 65 points. Columbia Hickman second with 81.

9. Stevens Rapid City SD--Third at the Augustana Meet of champions with 100 points behind Yankton (61) and Roosevelt Sioux Falls (61). Ran 8th Betsy Blacker 15:51, 9th Taryn Sahli 15;55, 12th Nichole Decker 16;12; 18th Kendra Crisman 16:33, 53rd Heidi Morcom 17;59

10. Iowa City High SD--4th at the Cedar Rapids Invitational with 119 points behind Iowa City West 44, Xavier Cedar Rapids 94, and Marion 111

Luther College Invitational, Decorah @ Luther College.
Kennedy Cedar Rapids IA placed five runners in the top 25 and scored 76 points to edge Pleasant Valley IA (78) and US#7 HL#1 Roosevelt Des Moines (88) in this fifteen team meet generally regarded as one of the strongest in Iowa. Roosevelt got a 1-2 finish from seniors Kiel Uhl (15:44 5k) and Jon Thomas (15:53) with Yawusa Kinda (sr.) fifteenth at 17:12, but fell back to 31st (18:06) and 39th (18:12) with their 4-5. Pleasant Valley's Kenny Slocum (sr.) was third at 16:17 followed by Jordan Anderson (jr. Mason City 16:26) and Ray Orris (sr. 16:31 Dubuque Senior) in the top five.

The Iowa City West girls dominated the meet, scoring 24 to win with Kingsland second (86) and Kennedy Cedar Rapids third with 88. Nicole Calabrese (sr. Kingsland) won with a time of 14:27 over 5k, with Iowa City's Sara Wickman (so.) second at 14:44, edging Roosevelt Des Moines jr. Hannah Roder (14:44). Iowa City West then took the next four places with Claire Hall (jr.) 15:16, Julia Frudden (sr.) 15:26, Janet Dobyns (sr.) 15:30 and Jordan Stahlecker (fr.) 15:38

Kansas

Wamego Invitational @ Wamego Municipal Golf Course Saturday 9/11/04
Traditionally the "unofficial" season opener for Kansas mid and small schools, the Wamego meet draws teams from all over Kansas to the hills of the Wamego Golf Course. Run on the 4A-1A state meet course, the meet provides an early view on some of the top squads and runners in Kansas.
Baldwin, winners of the last seven 4A boys titles, looks strong again after scoring 61 points to handily win the team title. Wamego was second with 104 points, followed by Clearwater (124) and El Dorado (129). Jay Lindal (Clearwater) was a clear winner with a 16:37 5k over Casey Johnson (DeSoto 16:47). Keith Cowart led Baldwin with a third place finish in 17:03, followed by Kerek Mason (Goodland 17:10) and Junior Medina (Ulysses 17:11) in the top five.
Clay Center stunned the girls field, scoring only 47 points and placing three runners in the top ten. Baldwin followed with 96, edging El Dorado (98). DeSoto (134) and Cleawater (134) completed the top five. Jessica Stephens (Colby) ran 11:58 for two miles to edge Clay Center's Amy Pierson (12:01) for the individual title. Brittany Graff (Eudora 12:17), Heather Garcia (Baldwin 12:21) and Gus Newmeyer (Clay Center 12:23) completed the top five.

In 3A-2A-1A comptetition, Norton won the boys title with 78 points, edging Lebo's 82. Sabetha was third with 95 points, followed by
TMP-Marian from Hays with 122 and Jeff Co North (157). TMP got a 1-2
finish from Cole and Troy Ginther, running 17:11 and 17:20.
McLouth won the girls title with 91 points, with Riley County a close second with 99. Pomona was third with 111, followed by Olpe (123) and Mission Valley (141). Riley County's Henry (first name not
reported) won with a time of 12:42, with Natoma's Fredecking (first name not reported) second at 12:55.

Topeka West Invitational
@ Stateland Cross Country Course, Topeka,
9/11/04

Nick Garcia (16:21) and Shea Camien (16:22) ran to a 1-2 finish over hilly Stateland Park to lead KS #2 6A Emporia to their second impressive win in two weeks. Garcia and Camien pulled away from defending 5A champ Grant Cain, who placed third at 16:27. Emporia scored 25 points to overwhelm the field, with Topeka Seaman second with 96 and SM East third at 101.
Shawnee Mission South won the girls title with 42 points, shading Emporia's 49. Lawrence was third with 74 points. The Raiders placed three runners in the top 10. Layne Moore won the girls title with a time of 12:29 over two miles.

Hesston Invitational Thursday 9/9/04

In class 5A-6A competition, Wichita Kapuan Mt. Carmel dominated coming within two points of a perfect score (competition run in class flights). The crusaders put 14 girls under 14:00, four under 13:00 and were led by Courtney Johnson's 11:51 win for the fastest time of the day. Scott Thompson (Salina South) ran 16:15 to win the boys 5A-6A title for the fastest 5k of the day, and Wichita Bishop Carroll won the boys 5A-6A title. (Thanks to those coaches who sent updates)

Millard South Invite 9/11/04
#5HEARTLAND SMNW KS Boys, #7HEARTLAND Marian Omaha NE Girls win

Shawnee Mission Northwest, accompanied by hundreds of orange-clad fans, won the Millard South boys team title with 48. Fellow Kansans Lawrence Free State (ranked #3 in KS) placed second with 58 points, followed by Millard North with 89.
Tucker Weems led SMNW, winning the individual title in 16;21, with Free State's Danny Schneider running 16:28 for second. Matt Conahan of Millard North was third at 16:32.
Free State's Alysha Valencia ran 15:13 for 4k and overwhelmed the field, with Katie Kelly leading Marian Omaha in second at 15:49, and Brittany Poole (Millard West) third at15:53.
Marian put three runners in the top ten to score 47 and easily win. Millard North (84) took second on a pusher from Millard West (84) with SMNW (ranked #3 in KS) fourth at 101.

In a clash of state title contenders, Alysha Valenica (Lawrence
Free State) ran 11:54 over the rugged Lake Affton course to turn back
2003 5A runner-up Courtney Johnson (Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel) at 12:22.
Emily Thompson (Winfield) ran 12:46 for third, with Megan Sornson
(Maize) fourth at 12:55 and Jennifer Dinsmore (Derby) fifth at 13:03.
Maize placed three runners in the top fifteen and scored 74 points to
shade Free State (82) for the team title. Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel
(111) edged city rival Wichita West (111) and Derby (119) for third.
Alex Umberger (Maize) stamped himself as a major 6A titlist
threat with a very impressive 16:14 5k win. Danny Scheinder (Lawrence
Free State) was second at 16:59, followed by Dustin Garcia (Arkansas
City 17:04), Mitch Voth (Maize 17:10) and Aaron Trent (Free State 17:15)
in the top five. Maize ran 1-4-8-9-16 to score 33 and edge Free State's
34 (2-5-7-10-15) for the team title. Wichita Bishop Carroll was third
with 66. Fourteen teams competed.

WEDNESDAY 9/8/04
Olathe North Invitational @ Prarie Center Park, Olathe 9/8/04
In a match-up of two of the Kansas City area's top girls
programs, Olathe East (#4 in Kansas 6A state meet 2003) edged Kansas
City MO Notre Dame de Sion (#4 2003 Missouri 3A state meet 2003) by a
single point for the team win. Notre Dame's Anna Florzak, the defending
Missouri 3A state champ ran 12:32 over a deceptively rugged course for
the individual title. Amanda Miller led Olathe East with a second place
finish at 12:49, and Olathe Northwest's Rebecca Stowe was third at
13:00. East placed four runners in the top ten and five in the top
fifteen to edge Sion 37-38. Shawnee Mill Valley was third with 66
points.
Olathe South's young squad continued to impress on the boy's
side, placing five runners in the top fifteen to win with 32 points.
South was followed by Olathe North (56) and Olathe East (65). Olathe
North's Matt Seifert broke away TOwin in 17:25, with South's Josh
Wayland (17;31) and Mike Partridge (17:31) second and third. Eight
teams from Kansas and Missouri competed.

THURSDAY 9/9/04
Hutchinson Invitational @ Carey Park, Hutchinson
The beat of the Bonds continues on at Hutch High. Lauren Bonds,
following in the footsteps of older sister Morgan, a many time state
track champ, ran away from the field here and hid. Bonds broke from the
pack and paced her waya to a 16:01 4K triumph, with Hays High's Hayley
Charles a distant second at 16:31. Elizabeth Marsh of Wichita East was
a close third at 16:33, with Kaitlyn Coen of Hays also under 17:00 at
16:42 in fourth. Hays dominated the women's race, scoring 55 points.
Maize was second with 103, and Great Bend (112) edged Wichita East (114)
for third.
Alex Umberger (Maize), fresh off an impressive victory last week
at the Carroll meet, won handily in 16:27 over 5k. Wichita East's Brock
Phillips was second at 16:40, and Hutchinson's Levi Cobb was third at
16:56. Maize won the boys title with 45 points, while Great Bend outran
Wichita East 79-88 for third. Ten teams competed.

Swather Special @ Hesston
Hesston's Swather Special always attracts a number of central
and southern Kansas top runners and 2004 is no exception. Pratt's
Phillip Navarrette continues to improve, with a blistering PR
performance today of 16:25 over 5k. Navarrette paced off of Newton' Ben
Histand before sprinting to the win. Histand was second at 16:38.
Garden Plain's Amanda Zoglman won the 1-2-3A portion of the meet
in with the fastest girls time of 12:41 over 2 miles.

Washington Invitational @ Washington
Pike Valley's boys (top ranked in 1A) put four runners in the
top ten to shade Valley Heights 25 to 41. Valley Height's Kracht (no
first name reported) ran 18:27 for the win on one of the state's
roughest courses. Washington (52) edged Pike Valley (61) and
Clifton-Clyde (64) for the girls title, with Stensaas (Pike Valley)
running 13:01 to win.

Girard Invitational @ Girard
Tyler Chirtano led a 1-2-3 Girard sweep, running a quick 16;17
5k for the win. Chirtano ran a 4:26 1600 last year. Girard scored 24
to win with Independence a close second at 32. Anna Yost won the girls
title for Girard, running 12:04 for two miles with Lansing's Rachel
Pride second at 12:26. The Lansing girls scored 22 to win with Girard
second at 33. Lansing is coached by Erroll Louge, a state legend with
over 40 years experience, with Girard is coached by his son Matt Louge.

Minnesota

FARIBAULT INVITATIONAL AT RICE COUNTRY FAIRGROUNDS FRIDAY 9/10/04
Eden Prarie scored 51 points to win the boys title by a large margin from MW#4 Stillwater (100) and Burnsville (111). Mankato West (130) and
Northfield (142) were fourth and fifth. Elliott Heather (Winona) won
the individual title with at 15:42 5k, with Mike Torchia (Rochester
Lourdes) second at 15:49. Rob Finnerty (Burnsville 15:52), Joe Moore (Stillwater 16:02) and Devin Corey (Eden Prarie 16:20) rounded out the top five.
Eden Prarie made it a team sweep, winning the girls title with 36 points. Stillwater was second with 70, followed by White Bear Lake (98), Apple Valley (104) and Owatonna (113).
Natalie Yarbrough (Eastview) won by twenty seconds over 4k, running 14:50., with Carolyn Bird (Stillwater) second at 15:10. Callie Malone (Eden Prarie 15:19), Jessica Lewis (Eden Prarie 15:19) and Paige Ties
(15:23) rouned out the top three.

STAPLES-MOTLEY INVITE, FRIDAY 9/10/04
In a big meeting of Minnesota girls powers, MW#4 Staples-Motley edged MW#6 Lakeville 31-32 to win the girl title. Elizabeth Yetzer (Lakeville) won the individual title in 14:22
Lakeville scored 35 to win the boys title with Roseville second at 56. Tim Branigan (Roseville) won the boys title at 15:53.

Nebraska

Kearney Rolls at Home Invite Thursday 9/9/04

Desi Swanson again led the Kearney ladies to victory at their home invite. Swanson scored her second victory of her career in her second meet, running 16:31 (4k) to edge Grand Island's Kristin Fitzgerald (16:32) and Dani Virts (Lincoln Southwest 16:35). Kearney scored 29, with Lincoln Southwest second with 68 and Lincoln High third with 69.
Kearney's boys also easily won, scoring 28 to win from Lincoln Northeast (71) and Lincon Southwest (83). Luka Thor from Lincoln Northeast won the individual title at 16:57, with Chris Hatch (Lincoln High) second at 17;16 and Rylan Kittle (Kearney) thid at 17:27

South Dakota

Pierre Girls Win Home Invitational Over Defending State Champ Chamberlain 9/9/04
The Pierre girls cross country team shaded defending state A champ Chamberlain 30-39 Thursday at Hillview Golf Course. Kristin Mohror (Chamberlain) won the race in 16;30 over 4k, with Amy Bradner leading Pierre with a second place finish at 16:45. Douglas won the boys title with 29 points over Pierre's 48. Gene Morrison (Chamberlain) took the individual title in 17:23 (5k).

Missouri

MARK FINLEY INVITE @ MCCLUER NORTH HS, ST. LOUIS 9/11/04
MW#8 Marquette placed four girls in the top fifteen to win the Mark Finley Inivte with 65 points. Columbia Hickman was second with 81, followed by St. Clair (133) and Ft. Zumwalt South (148). Columbia Hickman's Brianne Gallagher ran 18:56 for 5k to win, holding off a strong kick from St. Charles senior Amber Warren (18:59).
St. Louis University High won the boys title with 52 points, followed by Parkway South (92) and Ft. Zumwalt South (122). Marquette senior Garett Jeffries won the boys title with a fast 15:59, breaking away from the field in the second mile. Ben Brammeier (Parkway South) was second at 16:10 and defending state champ Tim Cornell (Columbia Hickman) was third at 16:18. 38 schools competed.

South Dakota

AUGUSTANA MEET OF CHAMPIONS 9/11/04
Over 1200 runners competed Saturday, but none could match the race put on by Ramsey Kavan (Yankton). Kavan jumped to an early lead and dominated the race, finishing in 14:24 for 4k with a large hill. Second went to Krista Eckert of Roosevelt Sioux Falls SD in 14:48, with Yankton's Betsy Bies third at 14:54, Yankton's Allison Eckert fourth at 15:17 and Lincoln Sioux Falls Kayla Jelen fifth in 15:42. Yankton won the girls title with 44 points, with Roosevelt Sioux Falls second at 61 and Stevens Rapid City third at 100.
Yankton's Ben Fielder won the boys title with a time of 17:31, with Lincoln Sioux Falls' Thomas Madult second at 17:42 and Austin Vandenberg third at 17:47.
