On a perfect late October afternoon, the 60th Annual Boys and 25th Annual Girls Cross Country State Finals were held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. The big winners were the MW#2 Warren Central boys and MW#5 Westfield girls team-wise, and Brock Hagerman of Pendleton Heights and Alexandra Banfich of Culver Academies individually. With runner-up finishes in both races, beating a total of five ranked teams, the unranked Valpariso boys and girls added to their rich tradition as well.
A big rally in the final 2k, and a 2-7 finish (1-3 scoring-wise) from De'Sean Turner and Ondraius Richardson, gave Warren Central its first state title. Valpo, ranked fifth in the state behind the Indy-area powers, scored 130, followed by MW#6 Columbus North (146), MW#4 Carmel (167), Bishop Chatard (172), Northridge (211), Ft. Wayne Northrup (213), Crown Point (246), and MW#8 Hamilton Southeastern was 9th (256).
Individually, Hagerman made a huge break at 3k and survived an emptying tank in the final 400 for his first state title in 15:14. Turner (15:26) outkicked Chesterton's Adam Martin (15:31), while early leader Adam Green of Franklin Centeral held fourth in 15:37. Further back were Bobby Moldovan (8th), Adrien Dannemiller (12th), and defending champ Justin Roeder (18th).
Westfield got the races it needed from everyone, whether it was the final kicks of Maggie Bingham and Kristina Krasich for 3rd and 4th, or the breakout performance from injured 5th girl Katlin Luter in 65th (48th scoring) that sealed the deal. They hit 88 points to Valpo's 126, MW#3 Carmel's 128, Northridge's 136, Lawrence North's 163, and MW#10 Indianapolis Cathedral's 176.
Banfich also utilized the big mid-race move for her win in 14:06. She was followed by Chesterton's Sarah Kehe (14:16), Bingham (14:19), Krasich (14:19), Valpo's Amanda Hardesty (14:20), Cathedral's Katy Achtien (14:21), and Valpo's Lauren Hardesty (14:22). Northridge's Megan Jackson battled for the win most of the race until her legs gave out on her in the last 350 and she fell to 11th.
Boys : Long-Awaited Titles for Warren Central, Hagerman
Brock Hagerman waited two years to win a state title; Warren Central head coach Joe Brooks half a lifetime. But there was no distinction between the degree of gratitude and joy each seemed to derive from state championships Saturday in Terre Haute.
The final two kilometers was the key in each case. Hagerman’s monster move from that point quickly ended anyone else’s title hopes; even those of WC standout De’Sean Turner, who made no attempt to go with him. From a team perspective, though, Turner and his teammates accomplished their task just fine, again with a late rally. At halfway, the WC was losing to Carmel, but with Ondraius Richardson picking up 25 spots and teammates adding more, they managed a 12-point margin.
A tearful hug between Turner and Brooks as they were leaving the podium said it all. “This is the culmination, the icing on the cake,” said Brooks after having revealed that it was the school’s first state title and that he was in his 23rd year as head coach there. The previous best was 5th in 2000. When asked about his top runner’s motivation, he added. “Oh, De’Sean is definitely a team player.”
His teammates definitely came through. Richardson was 32nd at halfway, but picked off 25 runners to get an unexpected 7th in 15:42. He was followed by Tim Armstrong (40th – 16:17), Cody Smith (75th – 16:43), and James Hodges (78th – also 16:43). Scoring-wise, they were 1-3-23-44-47.
“Ondarius was a big key; he ran awesome,” said Brooks. “He kind of sealed the deal. Then there was Tim, and Cody and James, they nailed about 10 guys at the finish.”
Richardson intentionally held back on the attack. “One of our alumni, Aaron Harding, made out a map of the course for us,” he said. “He told us not to go out too fast. I was confident even though I was way back there. When we got to the top of the hill (near 3k), I took off. When I looked up at the end and saw De’Sean, then I knew I had it.”
Hagerman (left) had it as soon as he made his move, though for more than 1.5 miles, it looked as though Adam Green of Franklin Central would take the race from the favorites. But Hagerman hammed the fourth kilometer (2:59) so hard that he gained 12 seconds on his pursuers … a bit of that time which he lost at the very end.
“That was the longest 400 meters I’ve ever seen!” he laughed after he had some time to catch his breath and accept some congratulations. “I was on empty. But this was awesome. My family has really been behind me all year. The Bible verse James 1:2-4 has been really inspiring me ever since last year.”
Last year was when Hagerman crashed at 3k, while leading, and faded to 26th. He had previously won semi-state, regionals and sectionals. At Foot Locker Midwest, where he was 9th as a sophomore, he was just 55th. Five months later his iron deficiency was finally revealed.
This time, when he hit 3k, he was well within himself. Green had taken control of things after the kilometer mark, going through the mile at 4:43, 2k at 5:55, then 3k at 9:06. By that point a pack was reeling him in that included Hagerman, Turner, and Southport’s Michael Pabody and Michael Disher, and Chesterton’s Adam Martin.
“I knew Adam Green liked to go out hard, but I felt like he would come back to us,” said Hagerman. “I was right where I wanted to be. My race didn’t start until 3k.”
Said Carmel head coach Chuck Koeppen: “Our boys could've been right there if everybody would've come through. We would've given Warren all they could handle. But I'm sure that Joe Brooks could point to one or two of his guys the same way.”
Added Columbus North coach Rick Weinheimer: “I think that this was a great year for Indiana. One of the deepest years I've seen.”
Columbus North runner John Pence said that the conditions were a lot better than last year, and that it was a fast race. (Last year was windy and muddy). Sam Baker, their No. 1 last year (20th at state last year) but sidelined today with an injury, said that this year was much more competitive both team-wise and individually than previous years.
Girls: Fifth Equals First
One would hardly have known it, riding on a cart just in front of the leaders, or running as a spectator from spot to spot catching the first 30 or 40 runners. But the girls state championship was being clinched between 60th and 70th place in the field of 168, right about where Westfield’s Katlin Luter finished.
Last week at the Franklin Central semi-state, the school had the race won through four runners, but there was a 25-point difference between Luter and Carmel’s fifth that enabled the latter team to take it, 63 to 75.
Katlin Luter has been hurt. She’s still hurt, with a stress fracture in her left foot. But after two weeks of light training, and running 17:28 and 15:51 at regionals and semi-states, it was healed enough that she was able to get some quality work in this week. That, plus a big dose of courage was able to get her through a painful state championship race in 65th place (48th scoring) with a career PR 15:15.
“It still bothered me; it still hurt, but it was worth it,” she said. “It was really more of a mental struggle than anything, but I was more mentally prepared this week.”
She was just eight scoring spots back of Carmel’s fifth this time, which was much more than enough to clinch the title for Westfield. The Shamrocks also got a tremendous come-from-behind 3-4 finish in the front from Maggie Bingham and Kristina Krasich (both 14:19), and a fine (16-17 scoring) race from Brianne Ehrman (14:35) and Kaitlyn Love (14:40). left, Krasich leads Westfield.
“These girls were just really tough today,” said Westfield coach Scott Lidskin. “We’re real excited. We had four girls All-State and everyone PR’ed. Katlin was unbelievably brave out there. All week we just told them to never give up and be at their best today.
“With 500 to go, I think Maggie and Kristina were 17th and 9th,” he added. “They had an incredible finish.”
Westfield has most of the field in deep trouble through three runners, but Valpo was still right there with Amanda and Lauren Hardesty (5th and 7th), and Andrea Kent (12th scoring). Love’s performance, however, opened up a huge lead on everyone and it was just left to Luter to close the deal.
Said Carmel head coach Chuck Koeppen, whose team was ranked third in the Midwest coming in: “All things considered, our girls ran okay; nothing special. I was proud of them. A lot of them are new to the state meet. Valparaiso had like four girls back from last year's state meet top 25 or something like that.
“Westfield -- they just stepped up today,” he added. “They're talented and well coached. They ran great. All credit goes to them.”
The runners for the leading teams weren’t the only ones at the front. When it was all said and done, it was a Culver Academy sophomore who was clearly superior on this day. Alexandra Banfich took her time while others took the pace, then (much like Hagerman) made a decisive move that no one could respond to.
Kelly Alexander of Terre Haute North took the early lead, soon to be joined by Lauren Hardesty. It took awhile, but contenders like Banfich, Northridge’s Megan Jackson, Chesterton’s Sarah Kehe, and Cathedral’s Katy Achtien gradually appeared just behind the leaders in the big pack of about 20. Alexander and Hardesty towed them through a kilo in 3:16, then a mile in 5:33. Achtien slipped and fell between those marks, but seemed to get up quickly and be okay.
The tension began to really build as 2k passed in 6:55 and Jackson and Banfich began to push toward the front. Just before 3k (10:20), Banfich (left) began her move away from Jackson, Hardesty, and Kehe. Her margin would eventually stretch to more than 10 seconds.
Kehe would be the next most solid and strong over the last kilometer, while Bingham and Krasich would stun with tremendous kicks, and Lauren Hardesty and Jackson would slip to 7th and 11th.
“She was nervous, but she did what we asked her to do,” said Culver coach Michael Chastain of his champion, “which was to go at about 2700m when she hit the downhill. She did fine.”
“I just tried to stay with the leaders until ¾ of a mile left,” said the shy Banfich. “And then just when I was feeling good, I made my move. I’m really excited to have the whole team here with me.”
Said Kehe, who was solid and steady from start to finish: “I just wanted to go out with a bang my senior year. She’s (Banfich) an amazing runner, but I can’t wait for another chance to race her in track.”

State Meet Preview
By Steve Underwood, David Luce, and Matt Clark
(Interviews by David Luce, Partial Analysis from David Luce and Matt Clark)
Many folks may tell you that Indiana’s state cross-country meet will be primarily a rerun of last week’s semi-state at Franklin Central, especially on the boys side.
The Hoosier state’s unique format has all of the schools in the state, regardless of size, competing against one another in sectionals and regionals, then four big semi-state meets the week before state. Four Indiana boys teams are currently ranked in the Nike Team National Midwest region and all four were at the Franklin Central semi-state meet. Furthermore, they took the top four spots in that race last weekend, in the order in which they are ranked. The girls’ scenario was almost the same, with three Indiana teams being NTN Midwest-ranked and finishing in that order.
Franklin Central also featured the two male runners generally thought of to be the best in the state, with Brock Hagerman outlegging De’Sean Turner of Warren Central, 15:03-15:07.
However, the winners and several key individuals from the other three semi-state meets would love nothing nothing more than to knock off those favored, and will have their chance to do so at the 60th Annual Boys and 25th Annual Girls Cross Country State Finals, taking place this Saturday, Oct. 29 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.
Boys
Warren Central has been ranked high in the MW all year, currently second, and with 92 points outran Carmel (MW#4, 121 points), Columbus North (MW#6, 138), and Hamilton Southeastern (MW#8, 146) at the Franklin Central meet.
They are led by Turner, who’s just a junior, plus Ondraius Richardson (15:46 at semi-state), Tim Armstrong (who had an off day at semi-state), and Cody Smith. Despite the fact that the WC has turned back its toughest state rivals on multiple occasions this year, those rivals are still optimistic.
Carmel doesn’t have the big gun up front, but at semi-state, they had a nice, short spread between their runners, especially the eight seconds between top runners Jacob Rich, Will Peters, and Chad Bowman between 15:57-16:05. Coach Chuck Koeppen, who also coaches the girls, said training this week was “Going great! Everybody is a little bit different. We try to individualize and try for each runner to have fresh legs. A freshman like Logan [Rosenberg] can't do the same amount or intensity as [senior] Will [Peters]. I think that is a better approach. I think we are going to be ready.”
Columbus North ran outstanding to be as close as they were, with similar packing to Carmel, but just a little back. Paul Zielinski, Eric Cave, and John Pence ran between 15:56-16:15. Said boys' and girls' coach Rick Weinheimer: “Our boys are excited about the opportunity to compete against Indiana's best! This is an outstanding year for Indiana cross country, and we are going to work very hard at putting ourselves into the mix!”
So which teams from the other three semi-states have the best chance to work their way up to the podium?
Many would say Valparaiso, ranked fifth in the state by IndianaRunner.com and by far the dominating team from the New Prairie meet downstate. They scored 59 to Chesterton’s 118. They ran in a very tight pack, led by Tim Hennessy (12th) and Billy Ryan (13th), and counted six seniors out of their top seven.
After that, it’s probably Northridge and Fort Wayne Northrop, the top two teams in the New Haven semi-state. Northridge, which won it all last year ahead of Carmel, was led by Loren Spirito and a very tight 2-3-4 of Ladd Mercer, Andy Williams, and Nate Yoder. Northrup ran behind individual winner Robert Moldovan’s 15:49 and four others spread out between 11th and 45th.
Moldovan is also one of those with a chance of breaking up Hagerman and Turner. Last year, while Hagerman battled his iron deficiency and faded to 26th, Moldovan was fifth behind winner Justin Roeder, Ryan Byrne (graduated), Turner, and Scott Keeny (graduated). Roeder, meanwhile, has battled injuries this fall, and was seventh at semi-state last week (15:42). But never count a state champion out. Adam Martin of Chesterton, the New Prairie champ, is another strong contender.
Said Moldovan’s coach, Barrie Peterson on his charge’s season and chances: Bobby's season has been pretty much as planned. He started off in a blaze of glory with a PR of 15:38 at our third meet, the Lafayette Harrison Invitational. He then had a string of kind of average races for him, as we were working toward peak performances at the end of the season. He has been very consistent through the tournament with a Sectional and Semi-State Championship, along with a Regional runner-up when he encountered a stitch in the side at the mile mark and had to battle through. Just prior to the tournament series, he also was our conference individual champion. Bobby has a sixth sense about him, knowing just when he has to be at his best; and he is really ready for the State Meet on Saturday.”
Regarding his team, he added, “Our team followed a similar pattern because of our training cycle and because of a relatively young and inexperienced group of runners. As they got more and more experience, their confidence began to grow. We got a real jolt of confidence with a super workout on the state meet course on Saturday, Oct. 1; and we have been running progressively better with each and every meet since then. A P.E. class injury to our number two runner kept him out of the conference meet, but he has been a very important factor in our team's performance lately and finally got back up to that number two position in semi-state. Our semi-state was our second best overall team performance of the entire year, with Lafayette Harrison still number one by just a tad. We will be running only one senior, two sophomores and four juniors in the state meet. They are chomping at the bit!”
Then there’s Adrien Dannemiller of Martinsville, who won the Bedford semi-state by 32 seconds in 15:33 and has become a popular choice to surprise and break into the top 10 or better. Said his coach, Carl Wagner. “Adrien is having the kind of season that we thought he could and would after last year's disappointing finish at Terre Haute. We honestly thought he was ready for a top 25 finish last year, and when that didn't happen, Adrien came away from that experience with an increased focus and maturity that really set the tone for his track season (he finished 12th in the 3200 in a career best time in what was probably a "perfect"race for him) and carried on over through the summer into this season. Last spring's state track and field meet convinced us he was ready to move to the upper echelon of Indiana distance runners; he set as a goal right then to finish in the top ten at this year's cross meet.
“Nothing he's done this season has led us to believe that he will do otherwise at state. From our very first meet and through the regular season and through last week's semi-state, he has shown that he has what it takes to make it to the podium this year and come away from Terre Haute as one of the state's most improved runners from a year ago. Until last week's semi-state, he had flown somewhat under the radar, despite an outstanding race at the Conference Indiana meet, but we really didn't mind that a whole lot. He is very much looking forward to racing against the "big guns" -- Turner and Hagerman, who he hasn't seen yet, along with guys like Bobby Moldovan and Justin Roeder, as well as Michael Pabody, who beat Adrien both times they raced.”
Girls
Though the Franklin Central region for girls isn’t quite as dominant as the boys, it still boasted the three NTN Midwest-ranked teams and four of IndianaRunner.com’s top seven teams. MW#3 Carmel scored 63, to MW#5 Westfield’s 75, MW#10 Cathedral’s 89, and Lawrence North’s 108. Northridge and Valparaiso, ranked second and fourth in the state, are also considered particularly dangerous. They won the New Haven (37 points to Fort Wayne Concordia’s 95) and New Prairie (53 points to Chesterton’s 68) semi-states, respectively.
“With the girls, I am concerned,” said Carmel’s Coach Koeppen. “You know Valparaiso will run its best at State. Then there is Northridge. We have run them two times and beaten them each time. But if you look, their times are very impressive. I would love to see our girls win. Our girls are pretty healthy. It should be interesting.”
Carmel had their top six between sixth and 25th place, in a 32-second spread, led by Kayla McCurdy, Lauren Waterman, and Bridget Blair.
Westfield’s mission is clear. Their top four ran exceptionally well, leading the meet, but a 48-second gap between their four and five was the difference. They must close it. Kristina Krasich (2nd), Maggie Bingham (4th) and Breanne Ehrman (7th) were all in the top seven at semi-states.
Led by freshman sensation Katy Achtien, one of the popular choices to win it all at Terre Haute, Cathedral was a close third. The team also boasted a great 2nd-4th span of four seconds.
Northridge got a blistering 14:32 from Megan Jackson, another individual favorite, in its domination at New Haven. Their second through fifth girls then rolled in within a 14-second span between sixth place and 13th. Valparaiso, on the other hand, is the defending champ and packs a 1-2 punch with Lauren and Amanda Hardesty. They placed second and fourth at New Prairie.
New Prairie was also the site of the blazing 14:28 from Culver Military’s Alexandra Banfich. Though several other girls are mentioned as favorites – most notably Achtien, Jackson, Silver Creek’s Kelsey Page (won Bedford semi-state), Lawrence North’s Erika Utter (won Franklin Central semi-state) and Rachel Ehret, Rachel Hissong of Dekalb, and Krasich – it is Banfich, a sophomore, who is mentioned the most. Her triumphs include the Centerville Stampede in Ohio, where she beat some of that state’s finest.
Jackson, however, won the huge Culver Invitational, while Achtien won New Prairie and Rushville.
Wondering what happened last year? Well, after Adele Mitchell and Rachel Stichter, who have graduated, it was Banfich, Sarah Kehe of Chesterton, Lauren Hardesty, and Jackson.
Conclusion: Any one of about 10 girls could win this thing.
Said Achtien's coach, Matt Wire: “Katy Achtien has had a magical season. Though we knew her pedigree coming in, she has surpassed our most lofty expectations. More importantly, she has done it with class and character. Katy is a very hard worker who is also blessed with a fierce competitiveness that drives her to incredible heights. Though extremely talented, she is also humble and, very much a team player.
“At Regionals, her first ‘loss’ of the season, she was asked to set a fast, early pace in a strategic move that was designed to help the team. She did exactly as she was told and, in doing so, sacrificed her individual title as she was forced to run ‘outside of her comfort zone.’ To her credit, she never questioned the decision even though it cost her the individual, regional title. At Semi-State, she had some ‘intestinal issues’ that slowed her a little, but she will be ready for this Saturday. She has a very specific race strategy AND the tools to implement it. It should be fun to watch!
“As far as the team is concerned, we feel like we’ve fallen off of everyone’s radar screen a little. After last year, that’s fine with us! Going into Saturday not having anyone keying on us or expecting much from us is an advantage in our eyes. Unlike last year, when we felt like ‘the hunted,’ we are now the ones doing the hunting. I also feel very fortunate that we were even third at Semi-State because we had a couple of girls who ran rather poorly. I think we can improve on our overall performance quite a bit which leaves me very optimistic for this Saturday. We’ve tried some new things this week with regard to our mental preparation, so we’ll see what happens. The team is a little older and more experienced this year than in previous years, so I think that will also work to our advantage. I have a nice mix of veteran leadership and youthful enthusiasm.
“As far as State goes, I honestly feel that we are one of about 6 teams that can win it all. As a coach, I am very pleased with what has transpired this season, regardless of what happens Saturday. To win the State title, I truly believe that it takes two things. First, you have to be good enough. If you haven’t done the preparation, there’s no way to ‘fake it’ at this level. Secondly, I think you have to be lucky. You have to have a day when everything falls into place and everyone runs to her potential. This aspect is the one that frustrates us coaches so much. Although you can do things to help or hurt your cause, ultimately it’s out of our hands at this point.
“I am happy with our season. The girls have done everything they’ve needed to do in order to put themselves among Indiana’s elite. As their coach, that is all that I ever ask of them. Too often, we get so focused on the destination that we forget the journey. I call myself a ‘process’ coach, meaning I enjoy the process of preparing more than actually competing. To me Saturday’s State Meet will be the ‘icing on the cake.’ It will definitely be fun. We’re looking forward to it.”
