Top 10 Scoreboard - Sep 11, 2004

How the NTN regional top 10 teams fared this week.

Boys - Girls

Many top Midwest squads traveled out to the Midwest Meet of Champions in Hillard, OH this past weekend.  While US #1 MW #1 York IL was training hard and not racing for the second straight week (they open up this Thursday with a dual meet), US #15 MW #3 Dexter MI and US #17 MW #4 Milford MI squared off at the Midwest MOC.  Milford came away with an impressive victory for the second straight year, while unranked Hamilton Southeastern IN proved they are one of the top ten teams in the Midwest by taking second and beating Dexter and MW #8 St. Xavier.  Carmel IN, which beat Hamilton Southeastern last week, won its own invitational.  Here is what went down:

Boys

#1 York IL – Did not compete.  They kick off their season on Thursday, where they take on Downers Grove North in a dual meet. 

 

#2 Columbus North IN – Competed at the Carmel Invitational.  This meet is an interesting one as they ran every team’s 1-2 runners together, 3-4 runners together and 5-7 runners together in three separate races.  Then in the end they add up all seven runners together and have a total team time.  Columbus North took third in the invitational with a time of 86:31, behind Carmel (85:27) and Portage (85:53).

#3 Dexter MI – Sr Lex Williams and Jr Tony Nalli led their Dexter team to a fourth place finish at the Midwest Meet of Champions out in Ohio.  They scored 103 points, finishing well behind the top two teams US #17 MW#3 Milford MI and soon to be ranked Hamilton Southeastern IN.

#4 Milford - Won the Midwest Meet of Champions for the second year in a row.  They scored 51 points, out dueling Hamilton Southeastern (2nd with 59 points) for the win.  They scored 3, 5, 10, 11, 22, 43, 52. Sr.  Mike Andersen and Sr. Dana Pitcock were their top scorers.

#5 Palatine IL – They did not compete at an invitational this week.

 

#6 Carmel IN – Hosted the Carmel Invitational.  This meet is an interesting one as they ran every team’s 1-2 runners together, 3-4 runners together and 5-7 runners together in three separate races.  Then in the end they add up all seven runners together and have a total team time.  Carmel won their invitational with a total time of 85:27, which beat second place Portage’s time by 26 seconds.  Carmel was led by Sr Joel Shaw and Jr Will Peters, who took the top two spots in the 1-2 race.

#7 Madison West WI – Did not compete in an invitational this past weekend.

 

#8 St. Xavier OH – Last year St. Xavier took ninth at the Midwest Meet of Champions.  This season they improved quite a bit and took third overall with 81 points.  St. Xavier had a twenty second split between their top five guys, as they were led by the King brothers.

#9 Huron Ann Arbor MI – Won the Bath Invitational in impressive fashion over a tough field.  Huron Ann Arbor scored 34 points, beating runner-up Rockford MI by thirty points.  Huron was led by Sr Adam Daoud and Jr Evan Lisull, as they finished first and second.

#10 Middletown OH – Sr Jeff See led his team to an easy victory in their invitational, the Middletown Invite.  Middletown scored only 23 points to take the title, while second place was Cincinnati Anderson (48 points).  See, coming back from a thyroid problem that kept him out of the first few meets of the season, won the invitational for the fourth time.

Girls

This weekend was a big one in the Midwest with the Midwest Meet of Champions taking place out in Ohio.  Five of the top ten Midwest girls squads were there.  #1 Clarkston and #2 Bowling Green both proved they are the top teams in the Midwest with their results, while #3 Naperville North showed they are maybe just as tough as the first two teams, as they beat some of the top teams in Illinois by a signifcant margin.  Here is the Midwest Scoreboard:

 

#1 Clarkston MI – The won the Midwest Meet of Champions (5k) once again.  For the second year in a row US #3 Clarkston won this high profile invitational, this time scoring 76. Clarkston narrowly beat US #9 Bowling Green who scored 83 points to take second.  They were led by meet individual winner Jr Jenny Morgan and third place finisher Sr Liz Mengyan.

#2 Bowling Green OH – The US #9 MW #2 Bowling Green squad showed they are a team to watch all season long, as they held their own versus US #3 MW #1 Clarkston MI.  Led by So Christy Titus, Bowling Green amassed 83 points, only seven points out of first place (Clarkston).  The most amazing part had to be BG's 2-7 split of only 43 seconds.  That type of depth will really help this squad in the long run.

 #3 Naperville North IL – US #23 Naperville North beat many of the top girls teams in IL, as they took home the team title at the Lake Park Invitational (3.0miles, flat).  North scored 40 points, as they put their top five in the top twelve places.  Second place was York H.S. with 86 points.

#4 Palatine IL – They did not compete in an invitational this week.

 

#5 Stevens Point WI – Won their own invitational (Panther Invitational/4k, some hills) on Saturday.  Stevens Point dominated the field scoring a mere 29 points and finishing 70 points ahead of second place Merrill.  They put their top five runners in the top twelve spots.

#6 Valparaiso IN – They did not compete in an invitational this week.

 

#7 East Grand Rapids MI – A disappointing finish for East Grand Rapids, as they closed their weekend at the Midwest Meet of Champions with a tenth place finish, scoring 246 points and finishing way back from other Midwest top ten teams.  So Nikki Brown and Sr Laura Malnor led the way as both finished in the top twelve.

 #8 Colerain Cincinnati OH – Even without their #3 runner, Colerain still finished in sixth place at the Midwest Meet of Champions, scoring 210 points.  So Erin Ragouzis and Sr Brittany Detzel led their team, both finishing in the top twenty.

#9 Milford MI – They didn’t have their best race of the year and finished up way back in 11th place at the Midwest Meet of Champions.  They scored 254 points and were led by Carlie Green (15th place).  Senior leader Mallory Farnum was missing from their top seven.

 #10 Northridge Middlebury IN – Competed in the Northrop Invitational.  They split up their squad between the junior/senior and frosh/soph races and still performed very well.  On the varsity level Chesterton was right with Northridge, but if you include the frosh/soph times, Northridge easily beats Chesterton on the fast 4k course.  Chesterton is the number three team in the state according to a few polls, so these results bode well for Northridge.
