GIRLS

1. Scottsboro AL – The 2004 state 5A champions and NTN qualifier have everyone back for Coach John Esslinger. Freshman Caitlin Chitwood, the defending state champion, went 1-2 with junior teammate Lacey Wright at the 26-team Memphis Twilight Classic this past weekend, as the Wildcats cruised despite losing projected #4 Emily Thompson partway through the race with an injured muscle in her calf. In-state rival Hoover ran a surprisingly strong second. “We are a team that works through early meets so I hope our best is yet to come,” said Esslinger. “We are as good or better than last year, but we need to get Emily back.”

Freshmen Madeline Morgan (10:59/5:09 last spring) and Leslie Boozer (11:26/5:13) bring strong track credentials to the top of the lineup, and Mountain Brook still does not have a senior in the top 7.

3.Oakton, Vienna VA – Two runners getting sick before last year’s state meet, and a subsequent 4 th-place finish, may have been all that prevented Oakton from earning a trip to Portland last December. This year’s team has 8 of its top 10 runners back, led by senior Kayley Byrne, and Oakton Coach Scott Raczko is confident despite a season-opening 3 rd-place finish at the Great Meadows Invitational behind unranked Midlothian VA and SE#7 Brentsville. "It was a good early-season race for the team,” said Raczko. “It's early and I feel that this team will continue to get stronger as the season goes on, as the team gains experience and continues its hard work. The state meet is two months away, and obviously that is the focus."

9/10 – Great Meadows Invitational, 5K, The Plains, VA

Conditions: Hilly, high grass and hot – slow.

4.Episcopal, Jacksonville FL – Michelle Kruegger’s Eagles return their top 7 runners from a team that finished 2nd in last year’s state 1A meet. Six runners went sub-12:00 for 3200m on the track last spring, led by junior Emily Ingham. Though Ingham got just a brief look at the heels of Kelly Parrish in the season-opening Katie Caples Invitational, as the Ocala Vanguard senior blitzed a course-record-tying 17:43 despite veering off course and losing an estimated 10 seconds, Ingham led an impressive 2-4-5-6-8 finish for an Episcopal top-5 that went sub-20:00 and spread 38 seconds.

9/10 – Katie Caples Invitational, 5K, Jacksonville, FL
Conditions: Very sloppy with lots of turns. Directional error near the 2-mile mark cost Episcopal pack a few seconds also.

5.Cardinal Gibbons, Raleigh NC – Justin Scranton’s Crusaders may lack a true #1, but the 2004 state independent schools champions have everyone back and are strong through 7. Proof of the teams experience, discipline and depth was given in a controlled season-opening win at the WNC Carnival. "We sent the top seven girls out together for the first mile and they fought me on it but our focus is Great American and Manhattan this year and our state meet," Gibbons Coach Justin Scranton told the Hendersonville Times-News. "We had to exercise patience at this time of year. Anyone who's been around this sport long enough knows you can't run fast every race all year long, you've got to pick and choose your battles." Gibbons’ great depth was in evidence again this past weekend at a stage race in Greensboro.

6.Holy Trinity, Melbourne FL – Freshman Kayla Hale leads the defending state 1A champions, and she has looked very fit in two appearances this season, posting easy overall wins in the preseason Wickham Jamboree and the season-opening Lake Brantley Open. The team won easily at Lake Brantley, but a gap of almost 2 minutes between Hale and the next Holy Trinity runner could be a problem in the bigger meets to come, including Saturday’s matchup with SE#4 Episcopal FL (among others) at the Florida State Invitational. “The others should only be 45-60 seconds behind [Hale],” said Holy Trinity Coach Doug Butler, citing effort as a factor. “They are complacent and will get a good wake-up call at FSU when Episcopal hands them their lunch!”

7. Brentsville District, Nokesville VA – Last year’s state 2A runner-up, Brentsville returns 6 of its top 7 and expects to be strong through 9. Junior Becky Stewart leads a top 4 that spread 11:09-11:53 on the track last spring for Coach Rob Dulin. Brentsville bettered SE#3 Oakton in its season-opener at Great Meadows but finished 2 nd overall behind unranked Midlothian. Dulin expects sophomore Amelia Emerson, 8 th on the team in the opener, to compete for a top 3 spot when healthy.

8. Lake Braddock, Burke VA – Mike Mangan never expected his rebuilding Bruins team – 3 of top 5 lost to graduation, including #1 Kelsey Snowden – to retain its top-10 preseason billing, but a 2 nd-place showing at the season-opening Monroe Parker Invitational behind a strong Westfield VA team, including an overall win by senior Erin Klein, shows the pipeline at Braddock is still flowing. The 2004 state 3A champs will be around in November to defend their title.

9. Morgantown WV – A team that surprised some last year on the way to the state 3A title won’t be flying under the radar again, and Morgantown must replace state runner-up Claire Berryman. A season-opening third-place finish in the Gettysburg Invitational, behind NE#10 Allentown Central Catholic and perennial power Chambersburg PA, combined with strong leadership by seniors Maria Dalzot and Erica Arthurs, have impressed Coach John Patti, however, giving him reason to think this year’s team could be even better. “I believe that this team is really starting to bond,” Patti said. “Each runner is concerned about the team's performance before their own individual performance. I also believe this team is ahead of last year's team at this point in the season. When I compare this year's times to last year's times, we are all ahead of the game. The spirit and attitude is also better at this point in the season compared to last year.”

9/10 -- Gettysburg Invitational, 5K, Gettysburg, PA

10.Eleanor Roosevelt, Greenbelt MDThe defending state 4A champions open their season this weekend at the Brentsville Relays in Nokesville, VA (Ben Ackerly will provide on-site coverage). Sophomore Dominique Lockhart (19:28/11:13/5:01) is the ace for Desmond Dunham’ Raiders, who are also expecting big things from junior Marika Walker after a strong campaign on the track last year (11:20/5:14). In a mile time trial last week, seven girls were under 5:35. “We are pretty strong right now,” Dunham said, adding that “we’re already better than where we were at the end of last season.” A strong, race-tested field at Brentsville will pose a stiff challenge for late-starting Roosevelt, Dunham knows, but he thinks it will pay off in the end. “Our coaching philosophy supports training over racing and being fresh at the right time of the season,” he said. “We think that it’s so easy to get caught up in big meets and racing often that it interferes with training and overall preparation for a peak performance.”

Others:

Collins Hill, Suwanee GA – The class of Georgia, Andrew Hudson’s Screaming Eagles return 5 of the top 20 finishers from last year’s state 5A meet, led by defending state champion Jackie Drouin. Hudson’s primary focus in the early going is to shore up the back end in time for Great American. Drouin and Co. ran unchallenged in a season-opening win at the Walton Stage Races and were likewise dominant in the far more competitive Carrollton Invitational this past weekend. McIntosh GA junior Emily Borsare was the individual winner at Carrollton, going 17:45 one week after posting a 17:41 runner-up performance in the Clara Bowl.

Midlothian VA – A team that finished 10th in last year’s 3A state meet and lost former #1 Amanda Patterson to Duke was not expected to be a regional force, but a season-opening win in the Great Meadows Invitational over SE#3 Oakton VA and SE#7 Brentsville VA has quickly elevated Midlo’s profile. “We weren’t on anybody’s radar,” said Coach Stan Morgan. Sophomore Samantha Dow, a transfer from Guilderland NY who went 18:12 for 3.05m last fall, is part of the reason they are now.

Green Hope, Cary NCInjuries wiped out a promising 2004 campaign, but Michael Miragliuolo’s Falcons still have the talent and could cause trouble for their more established regional rivals. In their season-opener, the WNC Carnival, Green Hope ran a strong second behind SE#5 Cardinal Gibbons. Green Hope senior Brittany Johnson overtook a fast-starting Kate Niehaus of Spring Valley late in the race to pick up the overall win. (Niehaus, who faded badly in the race’s second half, pulled out with about a quarter mile left.)

Green Hope won convincingly in last weekend’s Seahawk Invitational, led by Johnson’s second-place finish behind Athens Drive NC junior Callan Fike.
