1. CHAPEL HILL NC (#1)
also: PINECREST, SOUTHERN PINES NC (---)

11/05 – NCHSAA STATE 4-A CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Tanglewood Park, Clemmons NC

SE#1 Chapel Hill got a big scare from formerly ranked Pinecrest, the defending state champions, in the North Carolina 4A meet, winning by 1 point a meet many thought a mere formality on the way to an NTN bid. Tigers ace Jack Bolas did his job, using a big kick over the final 200 meters to best Broughton’s Sandy Roberts for the second straight week and claim the state title. Bolas covered the challenging 5K layout at Tanglewood in 15:33 to Roberts’ 15:38. Chapel Hill’s Ryan Workman finished 3rd overall at 15:52, and a less-ailing Duncan Hoge, in his best race in more than a month, finished 7th at 16:14. Miles Rampel (32nd at 17:10) and Taylor Muir (41st at 17:24) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 16:27 and spread 1:51. “The opening pace was very fast, and our 4-7 got caught back quite a bit,” Chapel Hill Coach Ron Olsen said. “And with the layout at Tanglewood, it’s really tough to make up much ground, especially this year with the amount of individual depth there is in the state.” Still, it was hardly a poor performance by Chapel Hill – the team’s top 5 average was an improvement on the 16:32 average the team posted on the same course three weeks earlier (in much cooler weather). “Pinecrest deserves a bit amount of credit,” Olsen said. “They ran a very strong race today.”

In that earlier race at Tanglewood, the 4-Runners Only meet, Chapel Hill beat Pinecrest in 2nd by 19 points. But the Pinecrest team that showed up on Saturday had clearly made impressive strides in the interim. Andy Wacker (4th at 15:55), Jordan Rickard (9th at 16:18) and Jed Black (12th at 16:27) led a top five that averaged 16:34, a significant improvement on the 16:52 average the team posted at 4-Runners Only. The big jump in performance is especially remarkable when one takes into account the spike in temperatures that runners throughout the Southeast Region had to contend with on Saturday, a day when very few teams anywhere were running particularly fast.

“We almost pulled it off,” Pinecrest Coach Jason Bochert said.

“The one thing we learned from Camp in Pennsylvania this summer was to believe in yourself and to run with confidence, and I think we did that today,” Bochert added. “The race was no big shock to us. We have a large senior group with experience and they knew what to expect out there. We wanted our kids to pair up with the Chapel Hill kids, and that’s how it worked out for 2 ½ miles.” As to the breakthrough at states, Bochert cited strong late-season workouts, a good taper and a number of pre-meet rituals that brought the team even closer together. “The kids were really starting to believe,” he said.

2. ST. XAVIER, LOUISVILLE KY (#2)

11/5 -- CLASS AAA REGION 2 CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Tom Sawyer Park, Louisville KY

SE#2 St. Xavier seems to be firmly in control of its NTN destiny after scoring 16 points to win its 11-team region meet on Saturday. Senior Scott McClain was first in the chute at 15:58 on the 5K layout at Tom Sawyer Park, leading a top 5 that averaged 16:34 and spread 1:12. Local rival Trinity KY, which figures to be Xavier’s toughest opposition in the state meet, averaged 16:54 in its region meet, held on the same course.

3. HOLY TRINITY, MELBOURNE FL (#3)

11/5 – FHSAA 1A REGION 2 CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Holy Trinity Academy, Melbourne FL

Five days after scoring a perfect 15 to win its weather-delayed district meet, Holy Trinity won its 14-team region meet with 26. Sophomore Kyle Cooke and junior Nate Taylor went 1-2 overall (at 15:52 and 16:12) to lead a top 5 that spread 1:19 and averaged 16:36 on the 5K layout at Holy Trinity. A hectic week at school, the absence of regular #5 Keith Potter (taking SATs) and some unseasonably warm weather made for a slower race than might have been expected – Holy Trinity averaged 16:25 on this course three weeks earlier, at the Holy Trinity Classic – and Coach Doug Butler was not disappointed with the performance given the circumstances. “We will be ready at states,” he added.

4. OAKTON, VIENNA VA (#4)
6. JEFFERSON S&T, ALEXANDRIA VA (#6)
8. HERNDON VA (#9)
also: WEST SPRINGFIELD VA (---)

11/3 – NORTHERN REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS, Burke Lake 2.98 Mile Course, Burke Lake VA

In the high-powered Northern Region meet, SE#4 Oakton VA scored a narrow victory over defending champion and SE#6 Jefferson VA – 2 points and 1 second in total time separated the two teams. SE#9 Herndon was 3rd, 18 points back of Jefferson, followed by Patriot District champion West Springfield, led by overall champion Mike Spooner.

Matt Kroetch, 3rd overall at 15:17 on the 2.98-mile Burke Lake layout, and an under-the-weather James Phillips (5th at 15:24) led an Oakton top 5 that averaged 15:41 and spread 43 seconds. The Cougars weren’t clicking quite as well as they had in the district meet at Burke Lake a week earlier, when they posted an average of 15:35 to easily beat SE#8 Herndon, but Oakton #5 Tommy Mason (21st overall at 16:00) secured the win by beating Jefferson’s #5 by 2 seconds – and 4 places. “It will be a battle at the state meet, but we are confident and ready,” Oakton Coach Phil Tiller said. “We have yet to show our true form.”

Jefferson, which dominated its district meet at Burke Lake despite going without #1 Brian Landry, due to illness, was at full strength on Thursday. Landry, with a 6th-place finish at 15:25, led a top 5 that averaged 15:41 and spread 37 seconds. The four runners behind Landry all ran faster than at districts, where the Colonials averaged 15:59. “I thought it was our best effort of the season,” Jefferson Coach Matt Ryan said. “We are looking forward to getting back to Great Meadow and putting together another great effort. Should be a very exciting team race.”

Herndon was led by junior Ermin Mujezinovic, who finished 2nd overall at 15:15, but a sub-par outing from junior Abe Daganchew, who was 11th at 15:42 after winning the Concorde District meet at 15:07, was too much to overcome. Herndon averaged 15:48 (after going 15:49 in the district meet) and spread 51 seconds. Though Herndon has little margin for error, if Daganchew – who Coach Pete Sherry said was a bit under the weather on Thursday – is at full strength this weekend, the Hornets have a shot at the AAA title.

5. BRENTSVILLE DISTRICT, NOKESVILLE VA (#5)

11/3 – REGION II CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Great Meadows (non-state) Course, The Plains VA

Nick Gehlsen was first in the chute at 15:49 for 5K to lead SE#5 Brentsville to an easy win in its region meet. Regular #3 Ray Delgado, who is nursing a sore Achilles, was held out as a precaution, but senior Eric Ekholm had his best race of the season, finishing 17th overall at 16:33, to help fill out a top 5 that averaged 16:15 on the non-state layout at Great Meadows. In the district meet a week earlier, held on the same course and with Delgado in the lineup (running 16:01), Brentsville averaged a very impressive 16:07. “He will race at states,” Coach Rob Dulin said of his talented sophomore.

7. WALTON GA (#8)
also: PARKVIEW, LILBURN GA (---)
COLLINS HILL GA (---)
MARIST, ATLANTA GA (---)
BROOKWOOD, SNELLVILLE GA (---)

11/5 – GEORGIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, State Meet Course, Carrollton GA

Parkview’s up and down season ended on a very high note with a win in the top-heavy state 5A race. The defending state champions, ranked as high as 7th in the Southeast Region earlier in the season before slumping in October, defeated SE#7 Walton by 20 points to give Coach James Tigue a state crown in his debut season as a cross country coach. Michael Winston, who finished 5th overall at 16:18, Patrick Ollinger (9th at 16:36) and Marcelis Lynch (13th at 16:47) did the work up front for a top 5 that spread 54 seconds and averaged 16:49 on the tough 5K layout at Carrollton. “We were confident we were the best team going into the race,” Tigue said, “but we were a little concerned about Walton because we hadn't raced them all year long.” Looking back on a challenging but ultimately rewarding first season, Tigue added, “I am most proud of the way my guys handled the pressure of being the defending state champions. Every race we knew our competitors were going to give us their best shot and for the most part the team responded well.”

A strong October propelled Walton onto the regional leaderboard, but the Raiders entered Saturday’s race still relatively untested against top competition. Jay Heller’s runner-up finish at 15:51 – behind McEachern’s Ben Hubers at 15:28 – and Corey Hunter’s 6th-place finish at 16:23 set up a top 5 that averaged a meet-best 16:48, but the spread of 1:31 was more than 30 seconds greater than Parkview’s. A quicker opening mile than the team was accustomed to – 4:38 up front – may have hurt Walton, said Coach Tom Williams. “We generally start slow and move up.” Still, for a Walton team that lost 4 of its top 7, including the individual state champ, from last year’s 5A runner-up, it was an impressive job of rebuilding. “We will be back for another try next year,” Williams said.

Nathan Frazier’s 4th-place finish at 16:11 paced Collins Hill, which was coming off a strong win in the Region 7 meet, closely matching Parkview’s performance in its Region 8 victory on the same course. But regular #2 Bryan Wilson was ill all week prior to the state race and ended up running 7th for Collins Hill on Saturday, opening the door for Brookwood, led by Billy Mateker (12th at 16:45), to move ahead in the final team tally. Brookwood and Collins Hill both posted top-5 averages of 17:07.

Previously ranked Marist, still running without ailing ace Iain Turnbull, scored 81 in the 4A race to win by 41 points. John Whitcomb, 4th overall at 16:41, led a top 5 that averaged 17:11.

9. HOOVER AL (#7)

11/3 – SECTION IV 6A CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Hoover Running Park, Hoover AL

Despite a 1-2 finish from Jeremy Moujoodi and Tim Landry, a depleted and somewhat uninspired Hoover team was tripped up in its sectional meet by unranked Vestavia Hills. Moujoodi and Landry covered the 5K layout at Hoover Running Park in 17:03 and 17:09, closely matching the performances they turned in a week earlier on the same course in the Hoover Invitational. But, with regular #3 Stephen Payne still sidelined due to illness, Hoover’s next three could not fill in quickly enough to cover Vestavia Hills, which put 5 runners in the chute before Hoover #3 Joel Rogers, who finished 11th at 18:24. Hoover’s top 5 averaged 17:58 after going 17:52 in their home invitational on Oct. 27, due in part to the collapse of sophomore Ben Willis, running 4th for the Bucs at the time, 50 meters from the finish. Still, Hoover Coach Devon Hind pointed out, the outcome would not have changed if Willis had held position and finished the race. “Hats off to the Vestavia boys,” Hind said. “They ran a smart race and proved they are a definite contender for the state championship on November 12th.”

MCCALLIE, CHATTANOOGA TN (---)

11/5 – TSSAA DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3 miles, Percy Warner Park Steeplechase Course, Nashville TN

McCallie entered its state meet ranked #1 in the state, and the Blue Tornado did not disappoint on a warm and fittingly windy day in Nashville, winning the Division II title by 23 points over 2nd-ranked Memphis University School. Freshman Riley Young was first in the chute for McCallie, finishing 9th overall at 16:19 on the challenging and slightly lengthened 3-mile layout at Percy Warner Park, but the team was not as quick up front as in meets past, due in part to the tactical nature of the race. “Thankfully, our depth was enough to carry the day,” Coach Mike Wood said. “I’m very pleased and thankful to get the win.” McCallie’s top 5 averaged 16:39, fastest of the day across all classifications.

NORTHWESTERN SC (---)

11/5 – SOUTH CAROLINA 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Sandhills Research Center, Columbia SC

Northwestern, nine days after losing on a tiebreaker to rival Fort Mill in their region meet, cemented its status as the best team in South Carolina with a dominating performance in the state meet. Behind junior Jonathan McGinnis (3rd overall at 16:08) and senior J.C. Koziel (4th at 16:18), the Trojans won the 4A race by 52 points with a score of 38, the fourth-lowest score in state meet history. Northwestern averaged 16:29 on the toughened-up 5K layout at Sandhills Research Center – across all classifications, no other team broke 17:00 – and spread 38 seconds. “We have trained the whole season with the state meet as our target date and anything less than a state championship was going to be considered a failure by this team,” Northwestern Coach Calvin Hudgins said. “So our focus the entire season was to be healthy and peak at the state meet. This was the only time this year that we really tapered for a meet.”

5. BRENTSVILLE DISTRICT, NOKESVILLE VA (#5)

11/3 – REGION II CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Great Meadows (non-state) Course, The Plains VA

SE#5 Brentsville is running its best at the right time of year. One week after winning their district meet with a score of 37 and a top-5 average of 19:26, the Tigers, running on the same 5K course, scored 38 and averaged 19:11 to win the Region II title. The return of regular #2 Lauren Bussian was part of the reason – she missed districts with an ankle sprain and ran #3 for the team at regions – but nearly all of the Brentsville runners picked up the pace. Brentsville ace Becky Stewart led the way with a 1st-place finish at 18:25, a 4-second improvement on her district win. “Our goal all season long has been to run our best race of the season at the state meet,” Brentsville Coach Rob Dulin said. “Hopefully, we are headed in that direction.”

7. COLLINS HILL GA (#9)

11/5 – GEORGIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, State Meet Course, Carrollton, GA

Heavily favored entering the meet, SE#7 and two-time defending state champion Collins Hill blitzed its 5A rivals behind ace Jackie Drouin, scoring 36 to win the 5A title by 74 points. Drouin, the defending state champion, won by 36 seconds over teammate Erin Guglielmo, covering the challenging 5K state layout at Carrollton in 18:29. Guglielmo (2nd at 19:05), Alexis Nichols (5th at 19:38), Allyson McGinty (9th at 20:00) and Hillary Hamby (20th at 20:32) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 19:33. No other team in the entire state field, across all classifications, had an average of less than 20:30, and only five broke 21:00. “The girls ran with confidence and had an amazing performance,” Coach Andrew Hudson said.

“When you're such a heavy favorite,” Hudson added, “there is pressure to perform to expectations – but we create that pressure for ourselves. We don't focus on winning, we focus on running our best races of the season, and we know if we do that, we can win.”
Indeed, a 3rd-place finish at the Furman Invitational (Oct. 8), behind SE#10 Hoover AL and SE#6 Mountain Brook AL, may have been the only meet of the fall where the team was not in tip-top form. “They had the most consistent season of any group I've coached,” Hudson said. “They really didn't have a bad race all season. We may have been missing individuals from time to time or had 1 or 2 individuals not run well, but all in all – they ran well every time out.”

11/4 – SECTION V 5A CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, John R. Esslinger Trail of Champions, Scottsboro AL

SE#8 Scottsboro tuned up for states with a lopsided win in its sectional meet. 11/5 – FHSAA 4A REGION 1 CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Sperling Sports Complex, DeLand FL

Buchholz senior Natalie Doss avenged a district-meet loss to Niceville freshman Chanelle Cox by winning the region meet a week later, and the Bobcats filled in quickly behind their ace to take the team title by almost 50 points. Doss covered the 5K layout in 19:23, 2 seconds up on Cox, leading a top 5 that averaged 19:54 and spread 49 seconds. In the district meet, held on the same course Cox went 19:15 to win by 11 seconds over Doss, while Buchholz averaged 19:43 and spread 38 seconds.

10. HOOVER AL (#7)

11/3 – SECTION IV 6A CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Hoover Running Park, Hoover AL

Nicole Muldowney, Kimberly Muldowney and Brittany Kahlstorf went 2-3-4 behind Laurel Pritchard of Vestavia Hills to help nail down a win for Hoover in its sectional meet. Much like the Hoover boys, the Hoover girls were hardly in top form in this race, averaging 21:06 for 5K a week after averaging 20:45 on the same course in the Hoover Invitational. “Neither of our teams got too fired up about running this race and it showed,” Hoover Coach Devon Hind said. “The top three teams out of six qualify for states so it was kind of a routine race for us. I was fearing all week the attitude the team seemed to have and the race performances proved my fears correct. We'll use this as a learning experience before we head into state.”

CHAPEL HILL NC (---)
T.C. ROBERSON, ASHEVILLE NC (---)
CARDINAL GIBBONS NC (---)

11/05 – NCHSAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Tanglewood Park, Clemmons NC

The Chapel Hill girls had much easier ride to the state title than the Chapel Hill boys, winning by 27 points to secure the 4th sweep of the 4A races in state history. Junior Becky Johnson, who finished 7th overall at 19:30, and junior Adrienne Wollman, 9th at 19:46, led a top 5 that averaged 20:08 and spread 60 seconds on the tough 5K layout at Tanglewood. In the 4-Runners Only meet at Tanglewood on Oct. 15, Chapel Hill averaged 20:10 and finished 2 points behind meet-winner Roberson NC.

Roberson, meanwhile, dominated the 3A race behind overall winner Caroline Kirby (19:15), scoring 33 points to win by 92. Still, the race hardly went according to plan. First, Roberson #3 Kylie Smith and #5 Claire Duval (the 2003 state champion) went down in a fall soon after the gun; both finished, but Smith’s 21:16 (23rd) was more than a minute slower than her time at 4-Runners Only. Then, Roberson #2 Meghan Gilmore, running with Kirby in the second half of the race, collapsed with a ½ mile to go and was subsequently taken to the hospital (she was released late that night). Kirby won the race by 21 seconds, leading a top-5 that still managed to average 20:25 (compared to the 20:08 the team posted at 4-Runners Only), but “our concern for Meghan cast a bit of a cloud over an otherwise successful day,” Roberson coach Dave Culp said.

“Even though we won by 92 points, the day was an unnerving experience,” Culp added. “I went from the excitement of seeing Caroline in the lead coming out of the woods toward the finish, to the scary realization that something had happened to Meghan. Our remaining 5 runners all knew they had to keep running even though they saw Meghan on the ground. I know that was difficult for them, but they understood it was the right thing to do… Before I knew the score, I told them all they were champions no matter the outcome.”

Previously ranked Cardinal Gibbons, which finished 3rd at 4-Runners Only with an average of 20:19, would have given Chapel Hill a good race at the 4A level but had no such competition in its 2A race. Behind sophomore Heather Beichner and senior Bernadette O’Neill, who went 2-3 overall at 19:27 and 19:40, Gibbons scored 27 to win by 95, with a top 5 average that matched Chapel Hill’s meet-best mark of 20:08.

11/2 – REGION III CHAMPIONSHIPS, 5K, Greenfield Recreation Park, Daleville VA

Virginia’s only unbeaten girls team was not in top form at the Region III meet but still had enough to bring home the title. Blacksburg, which entered ranked #4 in the state across all classifications, was led by sophomore Laurel MacMillan’s 5th-place finish at 20:00 on the very challenging 5K layout at Greenfield Recreation Park. The Bruins, who averaged 20:38 and spread 1:20, won by 11 over Jefferson Forest in second despite some bad luck with injuries and illness leading in. “I was impressed with how tough they ran on a difficult course,” Blacksburg Coach James DeMarco said. “I could tell at the mile that it was going to be a gut-wrenching day. But the girls didn’t let it get to them and did the best they could with how they felt. They definitely knew they weren’t 100%, but they went out and competed. This will serve us well next week.”
