10/8 – MANHATTAN INVITATIONAL, 2.5 miles, Van Cortlandt Park, New York City

Note: Complete results were not available as of Monday.

SE#6 Brentsville VA went to the huge Manhattan Invitational hoping for a top-7 finish overall in average time, and preliminary results indicate the Tigers came up just short. Top runner Adam Henken (13:08 for 2.5 miles) and #4 Ray Delgado (13:44) had what Coach Rob Dulin called their “best race of the season” as Brentsville finished 2nd in the Boys F Race behind NE#4 Warwick Valley NY. Brentsville’s top 5 averaged 13:33, compared to Warwick’s 13:23, which was the fifth-fastest average time of the day behind NE#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY (12:57), NE#5 Christian Brothers Academy NJ (13:12), NE#3 Morris Hills NJ (13:13) and NE#7 Liverpool NY (13:23). NE#2 Saratoga Springs NY (13:25) and NE#6 Bishop Hendricken RI (13:31) rounded out the top 7 overall.

Tatnall DE, led by Brian Sklodowski at 12:57.5, finished 2nd in the Boys A Race behind Guilderland NY. Tatnall #4 Will Vinton, who finished 27th at 14:04, may have done his fastest running getting from the nearby SAT test site to the starting line in Van Cortlandt in less than 20 minutes.

COLLINS HILL GA (---)

10/8 – FURMAN INVITATIONAL, 5K, Furman Golf Course, Greenville SC

Jeremy Moujoodi and Timothy Landry did the work up front at the Furman Invitational to help keep SE#9 Hoover AL unbeaten on the season – barely. Moujoodi finished 7th overall at 16:45 and Landry was 8th at 16:46 as the Bucs held off surprising Boone FL by one point, 127-128, to top the 58-team field. Stephen Payne (12th at 16:55), Patrick McGregor (31st at 17:23) and Justin Rogers (69th at 18:02) rounded out a Hoover top 5 that averaged 17:10 and spread 1:17 on the muddy 5K layout at Furman Golf Course.

Boone FL, coming off a win in the Large Schools race at the flrunners.com Invitational a week earlier (17:05 average) but ranked just No. 6 in the Florida state 4A classification, was not expected to challenge a group of favorites that included Hoover and SE#7 Parkview GA. But behind senior Aaron Kindt, who finished second overall at 16:08 behind Todd Smalling of Science Hill TN (16:01), Boone just missed pulling a major upset.

Memphis University School TN, rated second in the state coaches poll behind McCallie TN, edged out Collins Hill GA for 3rd. A solid season-debut by Collins Hill ace Nathan Frasier – he finished 9th overall at 16:51 after missing the first half of the season due to plantar fasciitis – bodes well for the Screaming Eagles as they approach the championship drive. “I was thrilled with our boys performance,” Collins Hill Coach Andrew Hudson said. “They’re rounding into a pretty good team after the debacle at Great American,” where Collins Hill finished 24th out of 25 teams in the Race of Champions.

SE#7 Parkview GA, a solid 10th at Great American two weeks earlier, stumbled to a 5th-place finish ahead of a McCallie team in 6th that was not at full strength. Parkview #3 Marcelis Lynch was slowed by a pulled quad, and #4 Tyler Jackson collapsed at the 2-mile mark and failed to finish (perhaps from dehydration), but Coach James Tigue puts the onus on himself. “In hindsight, I should have scheduled a week off from racing earlier in the year,” Tigue said. “The kids seem tired, and I am concerned that the frequent races have not allowed them to focus as they should.”

TAMPA-JESUIT FL (#5)

10/7 – Dual meet, 2 miles (on the track), Tampa-Jesuit HS, Tampa, FL

After tumbling out of the rankings thanks to an 8th-place finish at the flrunners.com meet, Tampa-Jesuit found its footing on the track in a 2-mile race against Bishop Kenny held at halftime of Jesuit’s Friday night football game. On a hot and humid evening in Tampa, Flrunners.com runner-up James Osborne was the overall winner at 9:35, followed by Bishop Kenny’s Luke Russell at 10:10. Right behind Russell, who finished 5th at flrunners.com, were Connor Revord (10:11) and Cade Rivard (10:12) of Jesuit, which averaged 10:10 despite the absence of usual top-5 runners Phil Scrivner (sore knee) and Mike Atkins (sore hip). Coach Mike Boza hopes Scrivner and Atkins will be ready to compete again in time for the district meet on Oct. 25.

McEachern GA junior Ben Hubers added to his extensive trophy collection at the Cobb County (GA) Championships, winning in 15:46 ahead of Walton GA junior Jay Heller in 2nd at 15:53. But it was Heller’s Walton team, ranked #2 in the state 5A classification behind SE#7 Parkview GA, that prevailed overall in the 13-team meet, 59-64. McEachern and Heller turned in the 4th and 5th sub-16:00 peformances on the challenging 5K layout at Wild Horse Creek Park, since its inception in 2000.

10/8 – MANHATTAN INVITATIONAL, 2.5 miles, Van Cortlandt Park, New York City

Note: Complete results were not available as of Monday.

Desmond Dunham made no secret of what was on the line for his SE#4 Roosevelt girls as they prepared for the Manhattan Invitational. “This is the money meet for us!” Dunham said. A look at the preliminary results from Saturday’s Eastern States race at Van Cortlandt Park suggests Roosevelt may have cashed in.

On a wet and windy day in New York, Marika Walker and Dominique Lockhart finished 15th and 16th overall (at 15:20 and 15:24, respectively) to lead Roosevelt to a 5th-place finish at 205 behind only four high-powered New York teams: US#1 Saratogo Springs NY at 133, NE#2 Hilton NY (147), Suffern NY (193) and Warwick Valley NY (205). Rounding out the top 12 in this highly competitive field were NE#8 Colts Neck NJ (212), NE#4 Bronxville NY (213), Fayetteville Manlius NY (232), SE#7 Tatnall DE (246), NE#6 Bay Shore NY (260), SE#2 Brentsville VA and NE#3 Jackson NJ.

Teshika Rivers gave Roosevelt three runners in the top 30 overall (28th at 15:39) – only Saratoga had a faster top 3 – and Tunisia Milner and Jennifer Redman rounded out a top 5 that averaged 15:56 on the renowned 2.5-mile layout.

“This was exactly what we were shooting for,” Dunham said, “so that we could make a convincing argument that we are the #1 Southeast team.” How the NTN Rankings Committee will rate the effort remains to be seen, but certainly the Raiders showed they can handle the pressure of performing on center stage. Coming to Manhattan “was something they wanted,” Dunham said, “and they did a great job channeling that pressure mentally, physically and emotionally in a positive way to run up to our potential. In addition, we have always been confident in our previous performances, so we had the security of just going out there and doing what we’ve done all season and run our race.”

“We were very happy with the way the girls executed as a team overall today,” Dunham said.

SE#7 Tatnall DE proved again that it thrives in big races. Two weeks after breaking into the regional top 10 with a strong showing at Great American, Tatnall finished 9th overall and 2nd from the region at Manhattan thanks in part to strong races up front by Katie Kershner (30th overall at 15:44), Annie Castagno (40th at 15:55) and Juliet Bottoroff (46th at 16:04). But for a girls team that consists of just 10 runners total, being at full strength on Saturday was perhaps most critical. “Well, finally we had all of our girls running in one meet!” Coach Patrick Castagno replied when asked to assess his team’s performance. “We have no depth whatsoever,” he added, “ so if one girl is not feeling well or one girl has an injury, our results are severely affected…. I feel our girls have better races in them than they showed at Manhattan. But I guess every coach feels that way. As a team, I am still hopeful of much, much more in the coming weeks. I am looking for more race aggressiveness, but they know that and are working hard at it.”

SE#2 Brentsville VA struggled to an 11th-place finish, in part because of nagging injuries which have hampered Julia Mitchell and Alex Kulifay since the team’s 5th-place finish at Great American two weeks earlier. Junior Becky Stewart was solid up front, finishing 19th overall at 15:31, and Coach Rob Dulin credited freshman Lauren Bussian (47th at 16:03) with running a strong race to fill the #2 spot usually occupied by Mitchell, who finished 62nd at 16:29.

SE#8 Midlothian VA was paced by M.C. Miller, 34th overall at 15:52, and Samantha Dow (35th at 15:52), but behind them the team struggled to fill in and finished well outside the top 10 with 332 points. The absence of freshman Paige Johnston, who ran #2 in the season opener but has spent key weekends playing soccer, is one reason why. “The girls seem to run better when she is present, even though she is only a freshman,” Coach Stan Morgan said. “With her, we are a much better team, and I should have her the remainder of the season.”

10/8 – FURMAN INVITATIONAL, 5K, Furman Golf Course, Greenville SC

Going by the results of the Furman Invitational, one might have thought Hoover was intent on proving it belonged back in the regional top 10, as the Bucs ran over a field of 51 teams – including three ranked rivals. Not so, said Coach Devon Hind. “Our girls ran consistent with the way they've been running all year,” Hind said. “We didn't do anything spectacular compared to our previous races – the strength of this team has been their consistency. Week in and week out they have given a great effort, and they are slowly but steadily improving.” Sophomores Nicole and Kimberly Muldowney finished 7-8 overall (at 19:33 and 19:46, respectively) to lead Hoover, which was dropped from the top 10 after finishing 2nd behind SE#9 Scottsboro AL in the Jesse Owens Classic a week earlier. Hoover averaged 20:12 on the 5K layout. “To be honest, we did not even talk about racing against ranked teams or making any kind of statement,” Hind went on. “We were curious how we would fare against [SE#5] Mountain Brook since it was our first meeting of the year, but we did not get ‘pumped’ for this race as one may think. We didn't even know there was another ranked team in the race until someone told us afterward. My philosophy with this group is to compete hard and we'll see how the score adds up. If they are competing hard, I'll be pleased regardless of the final outcome, as they too should be. Fortunately, we had a big victory [Saturday] – our girls have never won a meet like this in the history of our school, so they are proud of themselves.”

SE#5 Mountain Brook AL lost its shot at a win when #1 Madeline Morgan went down at the 2-mile mark and failed to finish. Freshman Leslie Boozer led the team home, finishing 5th overall at 19:27, but Mountain Brook ended up well back in 2nd place, 73 points – and 2:34 in total time – behind Hoover. “I think they are feeling the pressure of school, expectations and traveling a lot,” Coach Greg Echols said. “We will be fine, but obviously it was not one of our better performances…. Kudos to Hoover though; they ran well.”

Jackie Drouin of SE#6 Collins Hill was the overall winner at 18:50, but, with #3 Alexis Nichols unavailable (SATs), only one other teammate behind her broke 21:00. “Aside from Jackie, we probably had our worst team performance of the year,” Collins Hill Coach Andrew Hudson said. “That having been said, it wasn’t that bad.” Citing the absence of Nichols and the DNF for Mountain Brook’s Morgan, Hudson added, “The three teams could have been closer, but Hoover seems better than anticipated.”

Mauldin SC, the top-ranked team in the state, finished 4th in the team standings, paced by sophomore Alyssa Kulik’s 6th-place finish at 19:33. Morristown West TN, ranked #2 in the Tennessee coaches poll, rounded out the top 5.

DULANEY, TIMONIUM MD (---)

10/8 – LANCER INVITATIONAL, 3 miles, Kemptown Park Elementary School, Frederick MD

In an 18-team invitational that amounted to a dual meet between Maryland rivals Northwest and Dulaney, Dulaney got the better of things by 21 points thanks in part to a wrong turn by Northwest’s #5 runner, who lost her way on the course and was disqualified (course markings were washed away by rain and mud). Atholton junior Alison Smith got the overall win at 18:55 on a 3-mile layout that Dulaney Coach Chad Boyle described as “moderately difficult,” and in weather that Boyle called “classic cross country” – driving rain. Northwest’s Emma Eckerstrom finished second behind Smith at 19:33, followed by Emma Larkin and Kelly Rush of Dulaney (at 19:46 and 19:50, respectively).

BLACKSBURG VA (---)

10/6 – METRO INVITATIONAL, 5K, Green Hill Park, Salem VA

Five days after picking up a big win in the 37-team Octoberfest Invitational, Blacksburg rolled over a smaller field at the Metro Invitational on a rainy afternoon in Salem, VA. Senior Ariel Burbey again led the way for the Bruins, finishing 9th overall at 19:14 on the flat 5K layout at Green Hill Park. Freshman Allison Home (10th at 19:41), junior Cate Berenato (11th at 19:43) and sophomore Laurel McMillian (12th at 19:46) also dipped under 20:00. Sophomore Hannah Barrow (16th at 20:40) rounded out a top 5 that averaged 19:49 and spread 1:26. “Our top four have been amazing this season,” Blacksburg Coach James DeMarco said. “I think when we run this course in three weeks for districts they will all be under 19:15. Our fifth-seventh are making progress. The gap is a lot right now, but that will change soon. We would not be able to challenge Brentsville [VA] tomorrow, but my fifth runner will be ready by states to give us a shot.” A scheduling snafu with the school board prevented Blacksburg from competing at Great American, but a state-meet face-off with 2A rival and SE#2 Brentsville VA awaits.
