10/1 – WENDY’S INVITATIONAL, 5K, McAlpine Greenway Park, Charlotte NC

“Is there an NTN jinx?” Chapel Hill Coach Ron Olsen asked late last week after learning of his team’s new standing in the Southeast Region. “ Duncan’s sick as a dog!”

Chapel Hill #3 Duncan Hoge was hardly in top form the next day at the Wendy’s Invitational, though he still managed to finish 13 th overall at 16:03 on the PR-friendly layout at McAlpine Park, but the top-ranked Tigers were plenty strong to handle a field that featured teams from Virginia down to Florida and the most runners – 2750 – in meet history. “I was a bit concerned about the race going in, mostly because of Duncan’s health,” Olsen said after the meet, “but he really did a wonderful job on about 70% of what he’s capable of, and the others covered up for him pretty well.” Jack Bolas and Ryan Workman did the job up front, finishing 2 nd (15:16) and 4 th (15:37), respectively. Miles Rampel (26 th at 16:31) and Taylor Muir (30 th at 16:37) rounded out a top 5 that spread 81 seconds – at Great American a week earlier the spread was 1:45 – giving the team a 23-point win over 2 nd-place Pinecrest, which dropped out of the regional top 10 last week but was bolstered at Wendy’s by the return of projected #1 Chase Williams.

Asked if he had any concerns about a letdown following the big day at Great American, where Chapel Hill finished third overall behind NE#2 Saratoga Springs NY and NE#4 Warwick Valley NY, Olsen said, “Wendy’s is always the race I look at as the beginning of the ‘real’ season for these kids. We’ve really not done that much work specific to racing yet. Everyone was a bit tired today – we had a dual meet on Tuesday and a mini-workout on Wednesday for some of the kids – but they were excited for the opportunity Wendy’s always presents (good competition, fast times, etc.). It’s never hard to get a kid up to run fast at McAlpine!”

Also up to run fast again was Broughton’s Sandy Roberts, who lowered the meet record by five seconds – and equaled the winning performance he posted at Great American – with a first-place time of 15:03.

10/1 – OCTOBERFEST INVITATIONAL, 5K, Great Meadows, The Plains VA

SE#2 Jefferson VA, firing on all cylinders for the first time this season, dispatched a large field of state teams at the Octoberfest Invitational. Paul Norland, 8 th overall at 16:13, and Hersh Singh (11 th at 16:21) led the way for a 1-5 that spread 35 seconds and averaged 16:30 on the challenging 5K layout at Great Meadows. Competing on the same course three weeks earlier, at the season-opening Great Meadows Invitational, SE#8 Brentsville VA and SE#10 Oakton VA averaged 16:50.56 and 16:42.44, respectively. “I felt it was our best performance for #1-5, although we need to close the gap between #5-7,” Jefferson coach Matt Ryan said. “Brian Landry [15 th overall at 16:30] still continues to regain form and is increasing his training load each week. The meet served as a good starting point to the tough stretch of our Invite schedule.” Stiffer competition awaits at the Glory Days Grill Invitational (VA) on Saturday, a meet hosted by state rival Oakton.

3. St. Xavier, Louisville KY (---) – Franklin County Inv. (KY)

10/1 – FRANKLIN COUNTY INVITATIONAL, 5K, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington KY

SE#3 St. Xavier proved its breakout performance at Great American was for real by knocking off MW#4 LaSalle OH to win the Franklin County Invitational. LaSalle got the better of this matchup a week earlier, finishing 4 th in the Race of Champions at Great American, 11 points ahead of then unranked St. Xavier in 5 th. But on the rolling 5K layout at Kentucky Horse Park, site of the state meet next month, St. Xavier’s front three of senior Scott McLain (4 th overall at 15:59), junior Brian Long (7 th at 16:14) and senior Thomas Davis (8 th at 16:17) were too quick for LaSalle or anyone else in the 46-team varsity field. Senior Sean Brotzge (14 th at 16:39 and senior Daniel Schneider (23 rd at 16:58) secured the 13-point victory, rounding out a top 5 that spread 59 seconds. Eighth-year head coach Chuck Medley was pleased with the performance, coming as it did a day after a 10-mile training run, but he also noted that #3 Davis bruised his foot at Great American and was not at 100% on Saturday, and Schneider at #5 raced with a sinus infection. “I thought we ran great at Franklin County,” Medley said, “but I think we can do better.”

10/1 – FLRUNNERS.COM INVITATIONAL, 5K, Little Everglades Ranch, Dade City FL

Build it, and they will come. Event founder Jason Byrne has in just six years built the flrunners.com Invitational into one of the premier events in the region, and this past weekend more than 5,000 athletes made the trek to the new venue at Little Everglades Ranch. NE#4 Warwick Valley NY, fresh off a runner-up performance at Great American, entered as the prohibitive favorite on the boys side and did not fail to deliver on the surprisingly challenging 5K layout, posting a top-5 average of 16:19 that was nearly identical to what the team had run a week earlier in North Carolina (16:20).

SE#4 Holy Trinity was next on the pecking order entering the meet, but Coach Doug Butler’s Tigers were racing a major invitational for the fourth weekend in a row and seemed ripe for the picking. Just behind them stood three talented and better-rested teams – SE#5 Tampa-Jesuit FL, SE#6 Chiles FL and previously ranked Smiths Station AL – that were hungry for more regional recognition. “I came at this with a couple different view points,” Butler said. “I don’t like to race as much as we did, five weeks in a row counting the [preseason] jamboree, but I felt we had to hit these big meets to have a chance [at NTN]. I knew it could go the wrong way if we did not run well, but if we did step up, we would be in good shape.”

Butler’s gamble paid off on Saturday, as Kyle Cooke (4 th overall at 15:42), Austin Joiner (20 th at 16:19), Nate Taylor (24 th at 16:25), Kyle Butler (17:01) and Keith Potter (84 th at 17:19) delivered a runner-up finish with the team’s best performance of the season. Holy Trinity averaged 16:33 and spread 1:37 for 1-5, a week after averaging 16:38 and finishing 8 th overall at Great American. Butler was pleased with the performance, but added, looking to the week ahead, “My top kids are tired from all the travel and racing and will get a nice weekend off.”

Behind Holy Trinity the big names wilted in the Florida heat. Seminole FL and Buchholz FL, both unranked, slipped ahead of their more highly regarded challengers to round out the top four. Smiths Station AL was one point back of Buchholz in fifth, a disappointing result for a team desperate to prove itself and justify a high preseason billing (SE#4) after a hard-luck stumble in its season-opener four weeks earlier. “We performed about as well as possible under the conditions,” Smiths Station Coach J.D. Evilsizer said, noting that, much like what happened at the Eye Opener (SC) meet on Sept. 3, two of his top runners were ill at the start of the race and unable to run very well. “It appears we are snakebitten,” Evilsizer added. “If we can get five healthy runners to the line on the same day, we might surprise some people.”

SE#6 Chiles FL, behind 3 rd-place finisher Jonathan Blocker (15:35), had a faster average time (16:46) than all but the top two teams, but an under-the-weather Chris Lake – who ran #7 for Chiles on Saturday (17:52) after running #2 in earlier meets – helped contribute to an unusually wide 1-5 spread of 1:48. “I am still trying to figure it out,” Chiles coach Scott Gowan said. “I thought we would have been rested and would pop a big one . . .”

SE#5 Tampa-Jesuit, racing close to home and thought by many to have the best chance of knocking off Warwick Valley, had its NTN aspirations dealt a strong blow with an 8 th-place finish overall. “It was not our best day by a long shot,” Coach Mike Boza said. “Sometimes you’re just not going to be at your best and Saturday was one of those times. We won’t make any excuses. We had some unfortunate issues with injury and illness, but everybody deals with those things. You just have to get back up, dust yourself off, and get back in the race.”

Certainly Jesuit ace James Osborne can’t be faulted for his performance in what turned out to be a memorable race up front. Flagler Palm Coast star and defending champion Justin Harbor, surely eager to quiet critics after finishing a disappointing 9 th at Great American (15:41), dictated the tempo in the early going before breaking from his rivals – Osborne chief among them – over the final mile. Nearing the finish, a spent Harbor, who reportedly glanced over his shoulder at Osborne several times, hung on to win at 15:26 before collapsing to the ground in a heap (he had to be carried from the finish area). Osborne, himself struggling over the final mile, held on for second at 15:34, with Blocker of Chiles right behind at 15:35.

“I think the heat and humidity combined with the intensity of the meet pushed many runners and teams past their breaking points,” Jesuit’s Boza said. “So those individuals and teams who did well deserve plenty of respect.”

9. Marist, Atlanta GA (---)

9/10 – ALEXANDER-ASICS INVITATIONAL, 5K, McIntosh Nature Preserve, Douglasville GA

Racing under the lights at McIntosh Nature Preserve, SE#9 Marist got the better of SE#9 Parkview behind over winner Iain Turnbull at 15:35 for 5K. Marist, briefly written off after a slow start to the season, rejoined the top 10 after a 12 th-place finish in the Race of Champions at Great American and continues to show improvement behind a very talented front three of seniors: Turnbull, Jack Bourbonnais (5 th overall Saturday at 16:08), and John Whitcomb (8 th at 16:23). Junior Reilly DeYonker (15 th at 16:49) continues to improve in the #4 position, and freshman William Raffety (32 nd at 17:10) stepped up to round out a top 5 that averaged 16:25 and spread 1:35 on the flat 1.5-mile layout that runners circled twice. Marist Coach Roy Benson calls Raffety, the younger brother of 2003-04 state cross-country and 3200m champion James Raffety, “probably the key to the rest of our season.”

SE#7 Parkview got a PR performance from Michael Winston at 15:44, 2 nd overall behind Turnbull of Marist, and Patrick Ollinger (7 th at 16:12) continues to run well at #2, but behind them the team is still finding its legs. Marcelis Lynch, the usual #3, was demoted to the open race (which he won at 16:35), and, said Coach James Tigue, “our 4-7 runners are starting to run better as a pack but just haven’t had any breakout races yet. Consequently, our gap from 1-5 is still way too big.” Parkview’s top 5 spread 1:33 on Saturday, a week after spreading 1:18 in a 10 th-place performance at Great American.

SE#8 Brentsville, holding out its top 3 runners in preparation for Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational, reportedly finished 2 nd to Clarke VA in the low-key Stonewall Jackson Invitational.

Clarke, the defending state 1A champion, was not on the regional radar entering the season but is starting to raise eyebrows. At the large Oatlands (VA) Invitational a week earlier, Clarke bested a field of 39 teams that included many of the state’s best. Clarke junior Simon Biddle-Snead, the defending state champion, led the way at Oatlands, finishing 11 th overall at 16:42, for a top 5 that spread just 38 seconds.

10/1 – JESSE OWENS CLASSIC, 5K, Oakville Indian Mounds Park, Oakville AL

Strong races by sophomores Ben Willis, Joel Rogers and Justin Rogers in the 3-5 positions bailed out Hoover in the Jesse Owens Classic on a day when little up front was going well. Hoover picked up a narrow win over defending state 5A champion Tupelo MS, which was fresh off a dominating performance in the Mississippi State University Invitational, despite the struggles of #1 Jeremy Moojoodi (16:34), who finished well behind #2 Tim Landry (16:16, 5 th overall) after missing a week of training with foot pain, and the loss of #3 Jeremy Pain to back spasms midway through the race. “Our boys team seemed to have a disastrous day,” Bucs Coach Devon Hind said. “We were shocked to find that we still won the race.” Hind’s biggest problem remains finding high-quality opposition for his talented team, something he hopes will change at the Furman (SC) Invitational on Saturday.

McEachern GA junior Ben Hubers continued his impressive run this season with a 34-second win at 15:19 ahead of teammate Brian Potts.

10/1 – SALESIANUM INVITATIONAL, 5K, Brandywine Creek State Park, Wilmington DE

West Springfield VA followed up its strong showing at Great American – winning the Red race by 30 points over state rival Midlothian with an average time of 16:47 – with a win in the large schools division of the Salesianum Invitational on the difficult Delaware state meet course at Brandywine Creek State Park. Once again it was junior Mike Spooner leading the way, collecting his second race victory in a row at 16:22 (Spooner clocked 15:52 at Great American). West Springfield averaged 17:26 and spread 1:59 1-5 in ideal weather conditions.

Tatnall DE also did well at Great American and, like West Springfield, backed it up a week later, winning the C race at Salesianum with an average of 17:30 and a spread of 2:05. Tatnall junior Brian Sklodowski was the overall winner at 16:40. At Great American, Sklodowski ran 16:00, 6 th overall in the seeded invitational and first for a team that finished 6 th with an average of 16:57.

Greg Jubb paced Loyola at the Harford Invitational, finishing 5 th overall at 15:58 for a top 5 that split 30 seconds, but Loyola’s team win was overshadowed by the individual performance of Eleanor Roosevelt senior Mikias Gelagle. Gelagle, whose high-mileage training regimen over the summer was the subject of a recent feature article in the Washington Post, posted an eye-opening 14:51 on the flat 3-mile layout at Tollgate Park. Gelagle, the overall winner by 48 seconds in the Mountaintop Combo Invitational (WV) a week earlier, at 16:13 for 5K, hit the 2-mile split at Harford in 9:55 on the way to 45-second win over teammate Kelli Thibou, shattering the meet record of 15:23.

Our Lady of Lourdes, Miami FL (---)

10/1 – FLRUNNERS.COM INVITATIONAL, 5K, Little Everglades Ranch, Dade City FL

SE#1 Episcopal, still without top runner Emily Ingham, solidified its newly-attained standing as the region’s top team with a convincing win in the giant flrunners.com Invitational, a meet that may rate in importance behind only Great American on the pre-states regional calendar. In hot and humid conditions, on a newly designed course that was soft and surprisingly difficult for Florida (Episcopal coach and Team Saucony-sponsored runner Michelle Krueger ran 18:50 in the open race and called the course not as difficult as Great American, “but I definitely wouldn’t call it flat”), Episcopal ran tight behind sophomore Laura Steel to earn a 38-point win over Buchholz FL in second. So confident – and weary – was Episcopal going in, after the runner-up showing at Great American behind US#1 Saratoga Spring NY, that Krueger had Steel and sophomore Maggie Traylor back off and help pace younger runners. The result: five runners dipped under 20:00, and a sixth, 8 th-grader Mary Catherine Ingham, filling in on the varsity for her older sister, ran 20:05. “It was a tremendous effort by each one of the girls and a great accomplishment for the team,” Krueger said.

“We felt it was an important race because we knew the younger girls were ready to PR, and it is our new state meet course,” Krueger added. “I wanted to make sure they raced on it one time before states.”

The individual race at flrunners.com was much more closely contested, with Wellington FL freshman Ashley Brasovan and Vanguard FL senior Kelly Parrish battling it out up front. Parrish, who finished 5 th in the Great American Race of Champions at 17:46, entered the season as the top-rated runner in region, thanks in large part to a stellar campaign on the track last spring. But it has been the diminutive Brasovan who has garnered the headlines this fall. Brasovan’s reputation entering the season was such that at Great American she ran in the second-class Seeded Invitational – which she won by 54 seconds at 17:33. At flrunners.com there would be no such oversight, and Brasovan responded by besting her veteran rival by 6 seconds, 17:07.85 to 17:13.69. Cypress Bay FL sophomore Emilie Amaro finished 3 rd at 17:36.91.

6. Eleanor Roosevelt MD (#7)

9/30 – HARFORD INVITATIONAL, 3 miles, Tollgate Park, Bell Air MD

Any questions about Roosevelt’s legitimacy as a regional power are quickly being put to rest. A week after dominating the Mountaintop Combo meet on a tough 5K course in West Virginia, Roosevelt was at it again in the Harford Invitational, a meet featuring many of Maryland’s top teams. Dominique Lockhart and Marika Walker went 1-2 overall to lead the Raiders, clocking 17:31 and 17:34, respectively, on the flat 3-mile layout at Tollgate Park. Atholton MD junior Alison Smith, rated by many as the #1 runner in the state entering the season, finished 3 rd at 17:49. Roosevelt #3 Teshika Rivers, at 18:04, was one of six runners to dip under the course record of 18:10. “Eleanor Roosevelt’s girls are for real,” said Donnie Mickey, coach of 2004 NTN finalist C. Milton Wright MD, which finished a distant second overall on Friday. “I thought I had a good team last fall, but what [ Roosevelt] did today was very impressive.”

“At this point in the season they are better than we were last year,” Mickey added. “Their 1-2 combo is very good, and that makes their 1-5 spread” – 92 seconds – “a little deceiving. Tollgate is not a challenging course, but at the same time it is not totally flat either. I was very impressed with them today. I thought coming in that we may have had a shot at them, but it was not to be. I was very happy with what my team did today as well.”

For a team with a 1-5 spread of more than 2 minutes in the Mountaintop Combo, the successful return of junior Jennifer Redman to the varsity lineup may have been the most encouraging development for Roosevelt Coach Desmond Dunham. Redman, projected to run in the top 3 but slowed by injuries, ran a strong #5 at Harford, coming across at 19:03 for a much-improved 1-5 spread. “Redman has added the additional boost that we desperately needed,” Dunham said, adding, “With Dominique and Marika being national caliber runners, we discussed being within 90 seconds, and we came pretty close to that.” Up next for Roosevelt is Saturday’s huge Manhattan Invitational, of which Dunham said, “This is the money meet for us!”

7. Tatnall, Wilmington DE (---)

also:    Padua Academy, Wilmington DE (---)

10/1 – SALESIANUM INVITATIONAL, 5K, Brandywine Creek State Park, Wilmington DE

SE#7 Tatnall broke into the regional top 10 with a strong showing at Great American, winning the Seeded Invitational race with a top-5 average of 20:00 and a spread of 65 seconds. At the Salesianum Invitational a week later, Tatnall won the C race easily with an average of 21:03 and a spread of 2:25. “Overall, it was a solid performance for our first time running the tough Brandywine Creek course,” said Coach Patrick Castagno. “Since it is the site of our state championship this year, we wanted to get the girls to run this race and experiment with a particular strategy on the course layout. We are not completely happy with our times yet but feel we are making progress each week.” Castagno held out sophomore Katie Kershner, who ran #1 for Tatnall in the season-opener at Briarwood PA (9/17) and #4 at Great American on a sore Achilles tendon. “She was feeling better this week and wanted to run at Salesianum,” Castagno said, “but we felt it would be best for her not to stress her Achilles on this hilly course." Castagno expects Kershner to be ready for the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday.

Padua DE, a team very familiar with both Tatnall and Brandywine Creek, was the A race winner at Salesianum. Junior Jen Watunya, at 20:23, and senior Mary Kate McCaffery (20:20) finished 2-3 behind Brandywine DE ace Anna Broussell (19:04) to lead a Padua top-5 that posted a meet-best average of 20:53 and spread 91 seconds. Padua also got the better of Tatnall at the Briarwood Invitational (PA), as the two teams finished a close 2-3 behind Philadelphia Catholic League power Cardinal O’Hara. At Great American, however, Padua finished 18 th in the Race of Champions with an average time of 20:24 – an average 24 seconds slower than that of Tatnall. Padua Coach Theresa Marini-Kain cited lack of experience as a big reason. “At Great American, we went out very fast,” she said.

10/1 – PAUL SHORT RUN, 5K, Goodman Course, Bethlehem PA

SE#8 Northwest MD got roughed up a bit by some neighbors to the north in Saturday’s Paul Short Run at Lehigh University’s Goodman Course. Emma Eckerstrom placed 15 th overall at 19:13 to lead Northwest, and sophomore Becca Stinner had her best race of the season at #2, finishing 27 th overall at 19:40. But behind the two sophomores the team did not fill in as well as Coach Beth Meuhl would have liked, leading to a 5 th-place finish behind NE#10 Bayshore NY up front. Aislinn Ryan, fresh off her 30-second win in the Great American Race of Champions (17:05), ran 17:03 at Paul Short to win by 42 seconds over heralded Colts Neck NJ freshman Briana Jackucewicz. Colts Neck wound up 2 nd in the team standings, while Ryan’s Warwick Valley NY team, which finished 9 th at Great American, took 3 rd.

“This was a great race to be a part of,” Meuhl said. “It showed the girls that they have a lot of work to do and that there is serious running at the high school level, and they need to work even harder and become more serious at their practices and on their race days.”

Holding out most of his top runners in preparation for Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational, SE#9 Midlothian Coach Stan Morgan got a look at what might be in the C Race at William and Mary. Freshman Paige Johnston, who missed Great American and won’t run at Manhattan either due to soccer commitments, came in at 18:39, the fifth-fastest girls time of the day on the rolling 3.05-mile layout (James River VA sophomore Kristin Wolfe, after going 18:58 at Great American, posted the fastest time at W&M, at 18:19). Sophomore Tierney Willard, who ran #6 for Midlothian at Great American, was next at 20:16. Said Morgan shortly after the race, bemoaning the absence of Johnston and, because of injuries, two other top-5 runners from his A lineup so far this season, “If I can ever get these girls running together . . .”

Former SE#1 Scottsboro AL, which tumbled out of the rankings after a loss to then unranked Hoover AL at the Spain Park (AL) Invitational on Sept. 24, got a measure of redemption in the Jesse Owens Classic on Saturday. On a fast 5K layout at Oakville Indian Mounds Park – overall winner Laurel Pritchard of Vestavia Hills AL clocked 18:04 after going 18:46 at Great American – junior Lacey Wright (18:16) and freshman Caitlin Chitwood (18:47) went 2-3 overall to lead Scottsboro to a 9-point win over Hoover. And in a repeat of the Memphis Twilight meet three weeks earlier, SO#8 Tupelo MS finished 4 th behind Scottsboro and Hoover at 1-2. “We ran better [Saturday] as a team,” Scottsboro coach John Esslinger said, “and we defeated some really good teams.”

Hoover coach Devon Hind was hardly displeased either. “Our girls actually ran better, I felt, than the week previous [at Spain Park],” Hind said, noting that the team’s 1-5 split and dropped from 2:04 to 1:37. “The girls continue to improve each week, so I’m happy with the progress at this point in time.”

Chapel Hill NC (---)

T.C. Roberson, Asheville NC (---)

10/1 – WENDY’S INVITATIONAL, 5K, McAlpine Greenway Park, Charlotte NC

With TC Roberson NC placed in the unseeded 3A race, the fastest two teams in the large field at Wendy’s never saw each other on the course. Chapel Hill NC, perhaps feeding off the success of the SE#1 Chapel Hill boys, got PRs all through the lineup on the way to a 34-point win in the invitational race over Mauldin SC, the top-rated team in South Carolina. Juniors Becky Johnson, 7 th overall at 18:56, Lindsay Clendaniel (15 th at 19:30) and Adrienne Wollman (18 th at 19:32) led the way for the Tigers, who entered ranked #1 in the state for the 4A classification. Chapel Hill’s top 5 averaged 19:35.4.

Roberson, which entered ranked #1 in the 3A classification, dominated the 3A race (scoring 29 points, to 137 for Clover SC in second). Sophomores Caroline Kirby and Meghan Gilmore went 2-3 (at 19:18 and 19:26) to lead a front 7 that recorded 5 PRs. Roberson’s top 5 averaged 19:39.8.

Roberson coach Dave Culp, an engineer in his spare time, did the math and came up with the following: Combine the Invitational and 3A races and it’s Chapel Hill 119, Roberson 120, Mauldin 164; add Roberson only to the Invitational race and it’s Roberson 106, Chapel Hill 107, Mauldin 139. “Too close to call,” Culp said, “and I’m sure there would have been some racing between us that would have changed some times…. Both teams ran good races, and I’m glad we’re representing North Carolina well.”

Representing South Carolina well was Spring Valley senior Kate Niehaus, who posted a very convincing meet-record win at 17:32. Niehaus, who finished a strong 4 th overall in the Great American Race of Champions (17:40), seems to have regained her form after starting her season with two puzzling DNFs.

Morgantown WV was in good position Saturday at the McQuaid Invitational to witness a clinic put on by NE#2 Hilton NY. In the seeded 3A race, Hilton, led by senior Amanda Griggs’ course-record win at 16:53, took three of the top four spots and five of the top ten to easily best state rival Fayetteville-Manlius in second and Morgantown in third. Morgantown senior Maria Dalzot, at 18:31, and junior Monica Chase (18:57) both dipped under 19:00 on the 3-mile layout to lead the Mohigans. “This was a great educational experience for our girls and parents,” Coach John Patti said. “I believe the girls now know what it takes to get and stay ranked” on a regional and national level.

10/1 – OCTOBERFEST INVITATIONAL, 5K, Great Meadows, The Plains VA

Blacksburg VA finished 5 th in the state 2A meet and was not highly regarded on a regional level entering the season. But the Bruins quietly won two low-key invitationals to start the season – the Blue Demon (VA) Invitational on Sept. 10 and the Knight’s Crossing (VA) Invitational two weeks later – and at the Octoberfest Invitational they topped a large field that included many of the state’s best teams. Senior Ariel Burbey, who finished 7 th overall at 18:56, and freshman Allison Homer (15 th at 19:36) led the way for a Blacksburg top 5 that averaged 19:49 on the challenging layout at Great Meadows. State 3A power Westfield was 11 points back in second with an average of 19:52. SE#2 Brentsville VA, SE#3 Oakton VA and SE#9 Midlothian VA, competing on this same course in the season-opening Great Meadows Invitational three weeks earlier, averaged 20:21, 20:19 and 20:17, respectively.
