5K Road Time Trial. Winter Park, FL

The Park averages 16:10

#2 Winter Park opened with a time trial after an 11 day period where they could not train as a team. On a measured, moderately challenging road course, defending 4A state champ, Coleman Hoover sped to a 15:31 clocking. Hoover’s splits were a very even; 4:58, 10:01, and 14:58. Teammates, Donnie Anguish and Caleb Vogt followed in 15:58 and 16:02 respectively. Transfer Andrew Chuplis, sick at the time of the time trial, was next in a time of 16:11. 800m runner, Chris Sickinger, recovering from a virus, was the fifth runner across the line in 17:05.

“ We were a little rusty,” said Coach Mike Hill of his team’s effort. “ We had a couple of kids sick and with the 11 days off because of Hurricane Charley, we didn’t run as well as I would have liked.”
Next week, Sept.4, Winter Park will hold out their top three for the Astronaut Invite(Most likely cancelled) in Titusville, Fl. Andrew Cuplis and the others will run in their first official meet of the season. Due to Hurricane Frances, this meet will most likely be cancelled.

August 28 Gainesville GA Walton Stage Races

Collins Hill(GA), # 4 NTN SE ranked, opened impressively with wins in 2 of the five stage races. The meet is composed of 5 individual 2 mile races or stages for each of the top 5 runners and featured 47 schools and 2,000 to 2,500 runners. Nearly all the top GA teams were there. Temperatures reached low 80’s by the varsity start time.
GA’s top xc runner, Sam Bryfczynski(Walton) held off up and coming Jesse Marino(Collins Hill) in the #1 runner race, 10:09 to 10:10 in hot and muggy conditions. Both looked under control as they negotiated the 6-8 inch tall grass, soft surfaces and relatively flat course. Conditions were reportedly awful.

Collins Hill ended the meet with 10 points to Parkview’s, #2 in GA, 18 points.

“ The boys didn’t run that well,” said Coach Hudson afterwards.

Runners in both the girls and boys second stage ran long due to a mistaken turn. Coach Hudson estimates it cost the boys 1:40 and the girls 2:00.

Western North Carolina Cross Country Classic Hendersonville, NC

#10 Spring Valley Over #6 Chapel Hill

Spring Valley spent this summer looking to open the season up strong and did so in their first meet of the season. Ranked #10 in the NTN SE region, Spring Valley, won by a slim margin over surprising and unranked Myers Park(NC) and #6 ranked NTN SE region Chapel Hill.

Jake Bolas(Chapel Hill) and Reid Wilson(Spring Valley) ran neck in neck for two miles over the muddy and hilly course before Bolas gapped Wilson and sped away for the win in a time of 15:48. The time was just off Cardinal Gibbon’s Fredy Torres’s 15:41 meet record from last year. Fog kept temperatures in the low 70’s.

“I’m happy with how we ran,” said Spring Valley Coach John Jones. “ Our 1, 3, and 4 runners ran well, but our 2 nd runner had one of those bad days that just happen. He was 1 minute behind what he normally runs. He sprinted in well which helped the team. We’ll take the win. We’re excited, but we know it’s early.”

Spring Valley was without all-state swimmer and potential top five runner, Steven Luckie. Luckie, a highly recruited swimmer, has told coach Jones that he is in the best shape of his life. Luckie will possibly debut in the Coach’s Classic Sept. 11. All the best teams in South Carolina are expected at that meet. Identical twin, William Hunter who has been sick this past weekend may also be ready Sept. 11 and 800m runner Darrian Hodges will run varsity for the first time after finishing in 18:20 in the JV race at the WNCCC race. It was his first xc race ever.

Tampa, FL West Hillsborough Invite

#1 ranked Tampa Jesuit opened it’s season strong on an 85% asphalt course in their hometown. Conditions were identical to last year’s race according to Coach Mike Boza,
All of Jesuit’s runner improved over last year’s effort on the same course.

Andy Biladeau led the way. The 2A defending state champion stayed with his team though a first mile of 5:02, before cruising the last two miles in approximately 9:32. His 15:11 final time was a 19 second improvement over last year. It also was a personal best by 4 seconds.

Second man, James Osborne, improved 45 second to record his first ever sub 16 clocking of 15:54. Phillip Scrivner was next in 16:31. Coach Boza could not find Scrivner in last year’s results. Scrivner did not make the 17:51 cut on his time list. John Evans had a breakthrough race running a 16:14 (a 35 second improvement). Evans was the top Jesuit freshman two years ago. In the JV race, Peter Bandyk posted the fifth fastest time for Jesuit with his 16:45 win. Cade Rivard was not far off the pace with a 16:49 in the varsity race.

“Last year, we were lucky if our #2 guy was within a minute of Andy. This year, our top 4 were within 1:03 of Andy. I’m really happy about that,” said Boza.
Top 5 runner, Andrew Boza was held out as a precaution, but will participate in the next meet, the FSU Invite on Sept. 11. Boza is nursing shin splints which have kept him in the pool with minimal running.
