Boys

#2 ranked Winter Park(FL) survived hurricane Charley, but there was severe damage to the community. Some 30% of the old growth oak trees were knocked down in the area. Members of the Winter Park squad spent some 20 hours this week helping to clear debris from neighbors yards. School and practices were also affected. From Friday, Aug. 13 to just this past Tuesday, Aug. 24, Coach Mike Hill could not have official practices. Many of the incoming freshman and some of the others did not practice. The “Park” has been running fantastic workouts prior to the 11 day hiatus. Transfer Andrew Chuplis has looked very strong and the top 4 were approaching times that were run by FL state champion and 2000 Foot Locker finalist (16 th), Mike Swope, who is now at the University of Georgia.
A two mile time trial is schedule for August 27. That was moved one day back because of the missed practices.

#9 Fort Defiance’s(VA) top runner, Michael Clifton, has reportedly moved. Calls to the school have gone unanswered.

Girls

#10 Providence(NC) opened with an impressive showing at the Charlotte Orthopedic Summer Classic at McAlpine Park on August 21. They had two welcome surprises to begin the year. Danielle McNamara, a 5:16,11:32, and 18:30 5k performer transferred from Esperanza, CA and Coach Niedenzu, learned in mid August that Caroline Johnson, a 2:21, 5:21 and 18:59 performer for Providence last year, had changed plans on transferring to NTN NE #3 ranked Hatboro Horsham(PA) and will reenroll shortly at Providence.

Johnson did not run on Aug. 21, but Providence still managed a huge win. Article
Their next scheduled meet will be the Eye Opener in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Sept. 4.
