Boys Preview
The 5A boys race should be a close competitive battle.
At the beginning of the year, Collins Hill was the top team on the Georgia cross country scene.
At the Gwinnet County meet, a deep SE#8 Parkview, GA team was able to unseat them. Parkview then
performed well at the McQauid Invite, but suffered an injury to frosh Josh Pinson in the process.
Without him, they took second to SE#1 Hoover at the Furman Invitational.
SE #7 Walton, who lost handily early on in the season, pulled off the win at last chance over
SE #9 Marist and Collins Hill, who ran without Jesse Marino who was injured.
This week, all three teams will be healthy... hopefully. Walton is at the top of its game and
won by a narrow six points over Marist and by 19 over Collins Hill at Last Chance, the site of
the state championships. Their top three of Sam Bryfczynski, Jay Heller and Corey Hunter form a
strong core. Their fourth and fifth man will have to run solidly if they are to pull off another win.
If one considers that Collins Hill's Jesse Marino has run with teammate Nathan Frasier as he
has all season, the scoring would have swung to Collins Hill favor and they would have won by 9
at the Last Chance.
They will need another solid performance from Frasier and Marino as well as Matt Churley,Bryan
Wilson and Miguel Amador. If they produce, they'll win
Parkview did not race at Last Chance, but chose to run a the Coach Wood Invite. They beat Collins
Hill by two points at Gwinnett County with an off day by Collins Hill's Bryan Wilson. They too
will need some of their young freshman, Marcelis Lynch and Pinson to step up to have a chance.
SE # 9 Marist will be almost a lock to claim their third consecutive 4A state title.
Pete Zimmermann,Rob Heroman, Jack Bourbonnais, and Iain Turnbull form a tight pack at the front
which is separated by under 30 seconds. Their number 5 runner will have to close the gap if they are
to have a chance at top Georgia team honors. |
