Headlines:
* - #1 Fayetteville-Manlius wins differently, but the effect is the same. They're clearly the best in the Northeast.
* - CBA NJ starts turning potential into results with reverse result vs. Morris Hills NJ from a week before -- despite losing #4 man during the week.

Teams:

1. Fayetteville-Manlius NY -
3. Morris Hills NJ -
5. CBA NJ -

Varsity Race C @ Manhattan Invitational - All Varsity Races are 2.5 Miles

FM: Wow. FM didn't match their feat of 2004 with a scoring record of 15 and record team average of 12:48. But with the conditions, they still amazed and affirmed their status as the #2 team in the US. In abysmal conditions, they average 12:57 with four runners under 13 minutes. On dry ground, they may have been strong enough to break their own record. Before they broke the record in 2004, it had been 12:58, which means they have the two fastest all-time averages for the course - one on land, and one at sea. And this wasn't their best, because Andrew McCann, who had been sick at McQuaid a week ago, toughed out a 12:57. Coach Bill Aris was impressed, describing the effort as "herculean". New #5 Luke Fitzgibbons also came up big. Next big race is for FM is OHSL Champs @ Tully HS on 10/29, followed a week later by Sectionals.

CBA NJ/MORRIS HILLS NJ: A week after being over a minute behind Morris Hills in a separate race at the same meet at Holmdel Park... and during a week in which they temporarily lost their #4 runner to a random opposing school fan attack... CBA regrouped and rebounded, edging Morris Hills by eight points, and besting them on team average by one second, 13:12 to 13:13. CBA is racing next at the big Brown Invitational 10/15 vs. NE#2 Saratoga Springs NY, NE#6 Bishop Hendricken RI and formerly ranked Monsignor Farrell NY. Morris Hills' next big meet is IHC Champs on 10/18.

After their 3rd girl, there was a bit of a wait for Saratoga Springs' 4th and 5th scorers. In fact, there were early reports that they had indeed been upset by NE#2 Hilton NY. But in the end, it was a 133-147 edge. And that's OK with both coaches. You never know how a team will respond to a near miss like this, but Saratoga coach Linda Kranick sees it as an opportunity of sorts... "when you have to work hard to get something, it means more to you." And Hilton's Mike Szczepanik thinks that the experience was good for his team because they got to see how close they are to beating the nation's top team. Both teams believe they can run better, so the state meet in November should be one for the history books.

The other New York team lurking just behind these two is one that spent the first half of the season in the Northeast rankings, and then following a disappointing 14th place finish at the 10/1 Paul Short Run, dropped from the top ten. Well, Suffern proceeded to recover quite nicely on the hills of Vanny -- and it had everything to do with racing the entire top seven in one race. Last week, the 1,3, and 5 raced on Friday because of personal commitments over the weekend. And the rest of the team went to Lehigh. Together again in New York, they finished third behind Saratoga Springs and Hilton with 193 points. The freshman Shelby Greany and senior and NC State recruit Kara McKenna, finished in 7th and 9th to set the tone. "I was pleased with the how we competed", said Suffern coach Tom McTaggart. "Everyone did pretty much what they could given the conditions and the intensity of the race."

Unranked Warwick Valley NY, behind the amazing one point from Aislinn Ryan, whose 14:04.2 was the 3rd best all time, finished in a tie with SE#4 Eleanor Roosevelt MD. Newly ranked at #8, Colts Neck NJ was 6th. NE#4 Bronxville NY would fiinish a point back at 213. Surprising unranked Fayetteville Manlius NY (yes, they have a girls team)... was 8th ahead of SE#7 Tatnall DE, and NE#6 Bay Shore NY. The #2 team in the Southeast, Brentsville VA, was out of the top ten with 282 points, while previously ranked Shenendehowa NY was also out of the top ten.

Newly ranked NE#3 Jackson NJ would finish 12th with 295 points. Two runners took SATs during the morning, and only arrived at the course an hour before the race... one of them ill. Coach Glenda Calabro said it was tough day all around, but that she feels confident her team will bound back for their next race on 10/22 at the Ocean County Championships where they will get a shot at NE#8 Colts Neck NJ.
