Quote of the Week:
"They ran the fastest we ever have, so they must be."
– CBA NJ coach Tom Heath when asked if his team's all-time record at Holmdel means this year's team is his best ever.

Headlines:

*US#2 Fayetteville-Manlius NY credits improved competition with helping them raise the level of their performances this season as they reverse last week's lost to NE#1 Saratoga Springs NY at the NY Federation meet.

*US#5 Christian Brothers Academy NJ breaks their school record team average at Holmdel. The 23-year-old record also happens to be the all- time record for the state. NE#4 Morris Hills is a distant 2nd at New Jersey's Meet of Champs.

1. Saratoga Springs NY –
2. Fayetteville-Manlius NY -
5. Warwick Valley NY -
6. Liverpool NY -
Unranked Queensbury NY -

A week after a 4-point loss that dropped them from NE#1 for the first time during the past two seasons, US#2 Fayetteville-Manlius NY took care of some tough New York business by knocking off US#12 (NE#1) Saratoga Springs NY by 17 points. On a course slowed on average by 20-25 seconds because of muddy conditions, the race was close.

Saratoga once again took the first two team spots with Steve Murdock and Greg Kelsey getting 2nd and 4th overall. But from there, FM took the next four, and 5th man Luke Fitzgibbons beat the Saratoga 5th to seal the 66-83 victory. FM coach Bill Aris said the difference this week was "we were a little better, and Saratoga Springs was a little off from their state performance." While there wasn't a lot to do in prep aring for the race from a physical standpoint, Aris and the team took a look at what they could improve and what they had done well the previous week, "and everyone acknowledged the quality of the Saratoga team."

From a tactical standpoint, they went with shorter spikes, because in an effort to ease the soggy conditions in spots, meet management had placed down woodchips. "It was already like oatmeal, but with long spikes, they would have been picking up woodchips the whole way."

FM's Section rival NE#6 Liverpool came up with a great race to finish third, while Class A's Queensbury finished 4th. NE#5 Warwick Valley was three points back in 5th.

Aris says this year's level of competition can be credited for his team's improved performances in 2005. "Last year we weren't pressed before NTN. Last week we ran better in the loss than we had a year before in victory. That's the way it has to be to come back and repeat success." FM will not race any varsity in the Northeast Foot Locker regionals.

3. CBA NJ -
4. Morris Hills NJ -
10. Phillipsburg NJ -

It's a good thing it was their own record, because they crushed it.

In 1982, a great CBA team had run a 16:18.4 average on the challenging Holmdel 5k course. The 2005 team ripped a 16:15.6 average under perfect conditions to beat NE#4 Morris Hills 48-100 at the New Jersey All-Group Championships. NE#10 Phillipsburg was a distant 3rd with 156 points. Six of the seven CBA runners set PB's on the course, including the top five.

According to head coach Tom Heath, the greatest improvement this season came from 4th man Chris Lombardi, a junior, who started the season with a 17:15, and ran 16:26 on Saturday. His best time on the course as a sophomore had been 17:40.
US#7 Morris Hills had a very frustrating day, with one runner losing a shoe 1000 meters into the race (Holmdel is not made for shoeless racing), and another suffering from heart arrhythmia, which slowed him down dramatically. Plug those two in with their times from last week at Groups, and it's an entirely different race. As it was, even with those two problems, they matched their team average 16:34 of a week earlier.

In 2004, Morris Hills had lost to a great CBA team as they surged over the final mile. This year, Morris Hills coach Sean Robinson had given his team clear instructions to not allow anyone to pass them over that final stretch run. After watching disaster unfold during this year's race, Robinson was still reeling from the turn of events as he returned to the team tent. He was trying to keep a positive attitude for the kids, but was really upset for them after they had come to the meet fully expecting to take the top prize. What he found when he got there was something he will never forget. Regular #2 man Jayson Decker, who had run the final 4000 meters of his 16:23 without one shoe, was sitting receiving treatment for his bloody foot. Upon seeing his coach, Decker reached out, embraced him, and said, "Coach, I didn't let anyone pass me in the last mile. No one!"

8. Manheim Township PA - Season completed after finishing 2nd in PA state meet by a point on 11/5.

9. Brockton MA – "We were aiming for this meet the whole season."
Brockton head coach John Barry was very pleased with his team's performance, running for the second week in a row on a muddy and slow Franklin Park course. Five of the top seven ran faster than a week earlier, leading to a 16:31.2 team average. Junior Kevin Gill went for the win, and challenged Xaverian's Mark Amirault the entire way before getting out-kicked by three seconds.

Girls

Quote of the Week:
"They weren't as sharp as they needed to be coming off a 10-day break before our county meet."
–Hilton coach Mike Szczepanik on why his girls are racing Foot Lockers, which is 14 days after their last race, rather than getting ready to race at NTN on December 3rd.

Girls Headlines:
*US#2 and US#5 Hilton will settle the battle of the Northeast (and the US) in Portland, Oregon. But first a few of the girls are racing the Foot Locker Northeast Regional.
*NE#3 Roxbury NJ set the all-time team average record at Holmdel Park against a very strong NE#4 Colts Neck squad at New Jersey's all-group meet.

1. Saratoga Springs NY –
5. Warwick Valley NY -
6. Suffern NY -
8. Bronxville NY -
10. Ward Melville NY -
Previously Ranked Bay Shore NY -
Previously Ranked Shenendehowa NY -

Don't look now, but Saratoga Springs stayed on track and in focus heading toward NTN, despite the missing US#5 Hilton NY squad that had put a scare into them a week earlier in Toga's one-point win at the public schools state meet. And Saratoga accomplished the 53-138 margin over 2nd place NE#8 Bronxville NY with last week's #7, Cameron Vahanian running 5th this week. Senior Lindsey Ferguson was 2nd in the race and first on the team, five seconds in front of sophomore Hannah Davidson.

Back after a slightly off race at States, defending Foot Locker champion Aislinn Ryan was a 33-second winner as she prepared for the November 26th Northeast regional.

The pack-attack of NE#8 Bronxville helped them overcome NE#5 Warwick Valley and NE#6 Suffern. With no front-runner, they depend on a good group staying close, and that's what they got with a 19-second compression between 19th place Tori Flannery and 36th place Henrietta Miers. Class C Bronxville tallied 138 points, three better than Suffern. Previously ranked Bay Shore was 4th with 156 points, and NE#10 Ward Mellville was 5th, 13 points back.

2. Hilton NY - Declined invitation to NY Federations following one- point loss to US#2 Saratoga Springs NY at public schools championships on 11/12. Hilton's top five, Amanda Griggs, Caroline Schultz, Allison Sawyer, Ashley Jones, and Shelby Herman are all running in the seeded race at Foot Locker Northeast. Caileen Childs is running in the senior race. Coach Mike Szczepanik feels his team needs a race to stay sharp for NTN, but that skipping Feds was best for his team to avoid a five-week overload of meets. "They weren't as sharp as they needed to be coming off a 10-day break before our county meet." Griggs has recovered from an upper respiratory illness that hit her the night before States.

Roxbury won the NJ All-Groups meet with 64 points, 36 ahead of Colts Neck, and 47 ahead of Pope John. Both Roxbury and Colts Neck had three girls run season-bests on the course.

For a little perspective on just how good the Northeast teams are as compared to last year, Colts Neck's average is only three seconds slower than the 2004 Roxbury edition which went on to finish 9th at NTN.
