Boys

This was a masterpiece race by one of the best teams in the US this year, Fayetteville-Manlius NY. On consecutive October Saturdays, they simply dismantled the competition, and with it, two team average meet records. The first, 10/2 at McQuaid. The second, an unprecedented sweep of the first five places at the Manhattan Invitational in the Varsity Boys C race, with a meet record 12:48.82 average, nearly ten seconds better than the one set by Shenendehowa in 2003. Not to be lost in the excitement over this performance is the fact that they beat two other ranked teams, NE#3 Christian Brothers Academy NJ, and NE#9 LaSalle PA.

CBA finished 2nd with 54 points, while LaSalle was 4th with 104, ten behind Guilford CT. CBA had six runners in before Fayetteville's 6th, but they were in 6th, 8th, 10, 12th, 18th and 23rd. All you can say is Wow! That was the Varsity C race.

NE#4 Lockport NY, who had felt the sting of Fayetteville-Manlius at McQuaid, soundly dispatched NE#10 Monsignor Farrell NY 36-111 in the Boys A race at Manhattan. Lockport went one-two, with Mark Russell in at 12:56 for the win. They placed five in the top 16. Monsignor Farrell NY could only place two in that group.

In the Varsity D race at Manhattan, NE#6 Shenendehowa NY was upset by Saratoga Springs NY, 75-83. Dan McManomon of Shen won in 12:44. Steve Murdock paced Saratoga seven seconds back.

In the Varsity E race, NE#7 Morris Hills NJ won, with their top four nearly matching CBA's times from the C race with a team average 13:29.2 and scoring a 92-105 victory over Bethlehem Central NY. NE#2 Cedar Cliff is back in training mode after a two week sweep of a big PA meet in Carlisle on
9/25 and the big win in the Race of Champions at the Great American XC Festival 10/2. They won a dual meet over Central Dauphin 18-44 last week, and begin their post-season schedule with the Mid-Penn Conference champs on 10/20. The District meet is Oct 30 on the state course, with the State Championship meet the following Saturday 11/6.

NE#4 Cherokee skipped the Manhattan Invitational to focus some of their training and recovery for the Boys Eastern States meet at Van Cortlandt on 10/16. They're still not 100%, but should be close by the time their Group and MOC meets roll around. The did win the Boys Invitational Race at Great American.

NE#8 Toms River North NJ expected to face a top Florida team at the Disney Classic. Instead, they ran into another Northeast squad who was two weeks removed from nearly beating another ranked team at Manchester NH Inv. Londonderry NH used a team average of 16:16 and placed five in the top ten to beat Toms River 29-44. Toms River's Chris Pisano had to hold off Londonderry's Paul Ahern for the individual win, going 15:43-15:44, respectively. PA's Liberty HS placed 3rd with 122 points, to complete the Northeast trifecta.

Girls

Manhattan: The fastest time by a girl ever for the 2.5 mile course.

Nicole Blood, the Saratoga Springs ace, entered the back woods with Warwick Valley's Aislinn Ryan on her heels. She emerged with a 25 meter lead, and extended it to the finish to become the first high school girl to break 14 minutes, being timed in 13:57. The mark breaks the 18-year-old record set by Langley Virginia's Erin Keogh in 1986. Ryan was 17 seconds back. Saratoga dominated the team finish as well, scoring just 39, 100 better than NE#2 Bay Shore, which was paced by Laura Cummings, 4th in 14:40. Saratoga had their top five in the top fifteen when they crossed the bridge the first time, and had all five in the top fifteen at the finish with a scoring compression of 1:08. Ryan had beaten Blood at the Great American a week earlier, but than missed a dual meet last week with a toe infection that flared up after her NC run.

Pennsylvania's NE#9 Unionville girls finished a strong 3rd with 182 points, beating NE#3 Bethlehem Central NY. Unionville was led by senior Katie Thaeder, 20th in 15:22.

NE#4 Champlain Valley VT used good weather to overcome the competition and a very hilly second half of the course at the Wickham Invitational in CT. They placed five in the top 11 for a 31-66 win over Essex VT. CVU's Melanie McCormick was 2nd in 19:44, a second behind People VT's Jennie Bender. NE#5 Manchester Central NH held off Lyman Memorial CT, 117-134 at Wickham Park in East Hartford CT.

NE#6 Hanover NH, NE#7 Concord-Carlisle MA, NE#8 Parkland PA, and NE#10 Roxbury NJ did not race 10/9.

Top 10 Scoreboard

"The running was the easy part"

-- Fayetteville-Manlius NY junior co-captain Owen Kimple
describing his team's week-long STOTAN camp last summer.

(STOTAN is coach Bil Aris' name for his runners -- it's a combination of stoic and Spartan)

You had to see it to believe it. Fayetteville-Manlius NY manhandles the competition AND the meet record for team average @ Manhattan Invitational.

Lockport NY, which took its turn under the F-M bulldozer a week ago at McQuaid, lets others experience Fayetteville's front pack in Manhattan Varsity Boys C, and wins the Varsity Boys A race.
Also at Manhattan, Shenendehowa NY is upset by Saratoga Springs NY boys in D race, while Morris Hills NJ wins E race.
Toms River North NJ loses @ Disney FL Classic to Londonderry NH.

Girls Highlights

  • A meet of memories as the Manhattan Invitational delivers the fastest girl ever on the 2.5 mile course, along with a meet record for team average. Can Nicole Blood and Saratoga Springs NY be beaten?
  • Champlain Valley VT and Manchester Central NH stay local and win

The conditions were reasonably good, with overcast skies and a temp in the mid-60's. That was the good news. The bad news... the course. Preview

Are you ready for some football? Ah, I mean, cross country?

It's FM vs CBA at the Manhattan Inv 10/9, and a whole lot more. Eleven
NE ranked teams are joined by a few previously ranked and a slew of
wannabe-ranked teams at the huge, smooth, deliciously fun Manhattan
Invitational at Vanny, along with a cast of thousands.

Boys

#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY
#3 Christian Brothers Academy NJ
#9 LaSalle PA
We'll start with the Manhattan Invitational, where seven ranked boys
teams will race, mostly in separate races, and then compare times and
averages to make their claims. The biggest match-up of the day goes off
at 1:27 PM as NE#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY goes toe-to-toe with NE#3
(and former NE#1) Christian Brothers Academy. Both are coming off great
10/2 runs. Fayetteville dominated a good, and ranked Lockport NY squad
in record average time of 15:20 for 3.0 at a rainy McQuaid NY
Invitational. And CBA simply ran the 14th fastest average (16:34) on
the hilly Holmdel NJ course at the Shore Coaches Invitational. Lurking
in the race will be newly ranked (at #9) LaSalle PA, who won the Small
Schools race at the Great American Invitational with a team average of
16:42. This will be one for the books.

#4 Lockport NY
#10 Monsignor Farrell NY
Just 24 minutes prior to that race, NE#4 Lockport NY and NE#10
Monsignor Farrell NY go at it. Lockport would like to show they're
closer to Fayetteville than they did in Rochester, while Monsignor
Farrell is coming off a 4th place finish in the Boys Seeded
Invitational at Great American.

#6 Shenendehowa
At 1:39 pm, moments before the Fayetteville-CBA-LaSalle war finishes,
NE#6 Shenendehowa NY heads across the open spaces for their race around
the outer woods. They won easily on 10/2 at the Everett T. Grout
Memorial with a 14:12 average for 2.75 miles.

#7 Morris Hills NJ
At 1:51 PM, it's NE#7 Morris Hills NJ, off a great 16:49 average on
Holmdel in a different race than CBA at the Shore Coaches Invitational
10/2. Those who know the course, know the quality of that average.

#2 Cedar Cliff PA
The Colts won the ROC at Great American with a slightly ill #1 who
survived to finish 14th overall. Their team average of 16:24 showed
depth. They won a dual meet over Central Dauphin 18-44 this week, and
will train until their post-season begins with the Mid-Penn Conference
champs on 10/20.

#5.Cherokee NJ –
Cherokee won the Seeded Boys Invitational at Great American with a
16:42 team average. They are skipping Manhattan this week, instead
focusing some of their training and recovery for the Boys Eastern
States meet at Van Cortlandt on 10/16.

8.Toms River North NJ –
Toms River finished 11th in the ROC at Great American. According to
Coach Tom Jelley, his team listened a little too well to his
instructions to not go out too fast. Still, a 16:45 average is pretty
good. They will test themselves at the Disney Classic in Orlando this
weekend.

And last, but certainly not least...

In the 2:03 PM race at Manhattan, formerly ranked Bishop Hendricken, RI
and Chaminade NY will compete head-to-head. Formerly ranked Warwick
Valley NY will race at 1:15 PM.

Girls

What more can you ask for in a single race (until NTN, of course)?

#1 Saratoga Springs NY
#2 Bay Shore NY
#3 Bethlehem Central NY
#9 Unionville
California #8 Thousand Oaks

The top three girls teams in the NE, plus the #9 race the legendary 2.5
mile course. US#1 Saratoga Springs NY faces another challenge from
those chasing them, and a bit of history. NE#2 Bay Shore NY, NE#3
Bethlehem Catholic NY, and NE#9 Unionville PA are all in the 2:25 PM
Eastern States girls race. Saratoga simply dismantled the competition,
including Bethlehem, in the ROC at Great American. Bay Shore set a team
average record for the course at McQuaid. And Unionville trained
through the weekend in anticipation of this race. Also joining the fray
will be formerly ranked teams, including Warwick Valley NY, St. Basil
PA, Hatboro-Horsham PA, Columbia NY, and Morris Knolls NJ. California
#8 Thousand Oaks will also be in the race along with previously ranked
Eleanor Roosevelt MD from the Southeast region.

4. Champlain Valley VT – After an easy team win at Thetford VT, they'll
stay in-state for the Harwood Invitational.

5. Manchester Central NH – Took off 10/2 and will compete this weekend
at the site of New Englands at Wickham Park CT. More than 100 schools
and 3,000 runners are expected to race at the small park on the
Manchester-East Hartford border.

6. Hanover NH - Won the Black Bear NH Invitational 10/2 and will take a
week off 10/9 before their Connecticut Valley Conference champs 10/16
in Keene, NH.

7. Concord-Carlisle MA – Won the McIntyre Bay State invite 10/2 and is
taking off 10/9 in preparation for a big dual meet 10/13 against Newton
South.

8. Parkland PA - Won the big Steel City PA Invitaitonal over a strong,
and improving Chambersburg PA team. They have a big match-up 10/12
against District 11 and state rival Allentown Central Catholic. They
will not race 10/9.

10. Roxbury NJ - Moves in at #10 with a strong showing at the Shore
Coaches Association meet at tough Holmdel NJ with a 19:54 average.
