#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY
Perfect again in winning Section III Class AA Championship at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill
HS, with team average of 16:31 on a muddy course that had deteriorated
as the day progressed. Coach Bill Aris was obviously pleased with the
score, but more pleased with how well they ran, "considering the
conditions."

#2 Cedar Cliff PA
A sophomore-dominated squad from Coatesville nearly pulled a huge upset
a week after running a fantastic 15:49 at Lehigh in their district race.
But the PIAA AAA state title went to US#7 NE#2 Ceder Cliff by five points,
mainly because 5th man Corey Creek was the only one to improve his time
from the prior week. Cedar Cliff coach Ken Roseberry thought his team
would pop a race. He called their performance Saturday, "average."
"Everybody ran solid all year. Today, no one ran an exceptional
race. I figured if we were average (for us), it would be a toss-up."
Coatesville coach Keith Andrew, while disappointed in the loss, was
not only pleased with his team's performance, but their heart. Especially
for such a young squad. "They didn't bow down from them. They went
after them and attacked. Five points to a nationally ranked team...
that's real impressive. They could have caved, but they didn't."
Conditions were windy. The start and first hill go 3/4-mile into the
wind.

Both teams knew the Shore Conference meet on 11/6 would be a close
one, and with Toms River North getting healthy in time for the big meets,
it was. CBA's three-four beat TRN'three-four, and that was a lot of
the differential in the 38-51 score.

Bishop Hendricken RI
From Larry Byrne: Rhode Island State HS cross-country championships,
was conducted 11/6 on the grounds of Ponaganset HS, over a 5,000m course
of wooded trails and a few low-lying hills with the start and finish
over 300m of grass fields. Weather was bright sunshine, in low
60s, but a brisk breeze of 25-30 mph impacted the runners in the
open areas. The Boys race was won by Tom Webb in a gun-to-tape
effort, with a l50+ meter margin. The ease with which this Barrington
HS-junior took this event, puts him in the "dark horse" category
for the FLNE meet later this month. The team title was a very tight
battle between the perennial state champion Bishop Hendricken
(Warwick) and Cumberland HS, with the latter eking out a 2 point
victory, despite the "Hawks" having 5 men in before Cumberland's
4 and 5 finishers.

#3 Unionville PA
#9 Allentown Central Catholic PA
Previously ranked Parkland PA
Unranked West Chester Henderson PA
Unionville's 122 point win at the District 1 meet was impressive. But
a 111 point margin is astounding at a AAA state meet 11/6 at Hersheypark,
because the margiin was over previously ranked Parkland PA from District
11. The spread was an impressive 1:05. Even with the windy conditions
(3/4 mile start with one tough hill into the wind), Unionville followed
their usual plan which has each girl running their own pace, getting
place checks along the way. At a mile, they were tied with Allentown
Central Catholic. At two miles, they were 112 points up on Henderson,
with Parkland 114 back. And they only lost three over the final 1.1
miles.Coach Mark Lacianca said he was especially proud of the way the
team handled the whole weekend. "I really had no fears."
