Snohomish Overpowers – Leary Makes Case for State

by Leo Collins

The cross country teams of Bend, Oregon hosted a very interesting meet near the downtown area last Saturday on a rather chilly 42 degree day. Drake Park is a rather bucolic setting for a race, as the Deschutes River flows by on one side & the course weaves beneath towering trees, but the competition was rather spirited. Those, who attended, were treated to excellent races and even blessed by the running gods, as the rain, which poured just outside of town both before & after the meet held off for the most part.

Girls

The elite girl’s race was probably the most anticipated event as Snohomish, Washington ranked in the nation’s Top Five by the Harrier Magazine was to run. Add to the team competition the fact that a number of top returnees from last year’s State Meet were also on hand and there was a distinct air of anticipation.

As might be expected a strong & full pack took off from the start & it was only after a mile that the race appeared to have taken shape with Erin Gray, the defending State champion from South Eugene, and Katie Leary of Klammath Union taking a slight lead. Only slightly behind raced Zoe Roy of Summit & Meghan Armstrong of Tualatin. Those runners appeared to have the race in hand at that point, as there was a gap of around twenty yards before Annaliese Chapa of Central Catholic who headed the next group. The course is mostly on the grass with some slight hills and for the most part stays on only one point of the river, yet at about the 2 mile mark it crosses a wooden bridge for a brief loop on the far side. By this point it appeared to be a race between Gray & Leary with Roy trailing by about five yards & Armstrong another three meters removed.

Racing the next 600 the order remained the same as the runners recrossed the river. From that point the runners raced along the side of the river until, well out of sight, they looped around and headed back. Upon their return the scene had shifted surprisingly for Katie Leary appeared all alone in the distance with a large lead and following her was Tualatin’s Armstrong. Erin Gray placed 3rd ten seconds behind Armstrong yet 6 seconds ahead of Roy. Annaliese Chapa threaded her way into contention to place 5th. Snohomish, led by 6th place finisher Alyssa Modrell, left no doubt about the team championship as they had their entire top five in at the 19:27 mark, which was good for 15th place. With a low of 53 points they showed why they are so highly regarded leading a fine team from Bishop Kelly of Idaho by almost 50 points with Klammath Union third. With this race one can only say that Katie Leary has made her own case for being State Champion - the fine time of 18:02 only emphasizes it more!

Boys

At times one can become a bit complacent and assume that an upcoming race is going to follow some sort of a form chart but anyone, who might have held that feeling on Saturday, was in for a real surprise. The nice thing about cross country races is that they can have a distinct ebb and flow for an individual runner and this was surely on display in Bend.

Numerous runners held the lead at one point or the other in the elite boys race with Bend’s Jacob Marx taking the first turn. Shortly after the mile mark Newberg’s Sage Canady assumed the lead with a good half-dozen runners a bit behind. By the time that they were to cross the bridge Klammath Union’s Kevin Pelligrino moved into the lead with Kenyon Neuman of Summit & Andy Wright of Ashland giving close pursuit. Also with this lead group was improving Jordan Pommerening of Rex Putnam.

As had occurred earlier with the girls the leaders glided out of sight only to stun the crowd upon their return. Striding up the hill toward the finish was Summit’s Neuman, who crossed the finish with a very good time of 15:38. He held a two second lead over Andy Wright of Ashland. Neuman added after the race that he “really didn’t feel all that well” at that point but there is little doubt that, however he felt: “he was rolling” as Pommerening noted. There is a lesson for all of us there, whether we are runners or not.

The team title went to Mountain View of Oregon while Snohomish and Bend had a good battle for second & third.
