NTN Regional Rankings Oct 8
four new regional #1 teams this week
The Oct 8 weekly update of the Nike Team Nationals regional rankings has four new regional leaders: Los Alamos NM girls (joining the Los Alamos boys on top of the Southwest), St. Paul's Mobile AL girls (SE - unbeaten winner of Jesse Owens Classic), Tucker Richmond VA boys (SE - surprise runner-up at Great American ROC), and Flathead Kalispell MT girls (NW - unbeaten winner of the Sunfair over ranked teams). The top two teams in each region at the end of the season will be invited to the new Nike Team Nationals in Portland OR Dec 4. Four national at large teams will also be invited.

Div 1 girls race features MW#6 St. Ursula Academy Cincinnati OH travelling north to face MW#8 Goodrich MI, which is moving up from Div 3 for the challenge. Div 1 boys has national mile star Jeff See, whose Middletown OH team will test MW#10 Huron Ann Arbor MI. MW#6 Dexter MI boys are in Div 2. See finished second at the Great American with a powerful kick after being buried back in the pack for most of the race. |

- NY McQuaid Inv - NE#1 US#5 Fayetteville-Manlius NY boys rout NE#6 Lockport NY and SE#5 Parkview GA with near perfect 19 (1 2 4 5 7). Fayetteville-Manlius is "the real deal," says meet director Peter Glavin. NE#2 US#7 Bay Shore NY girls 44 (Hilton 60, Morgantown WV 96). Jared Burdick 15:12 and Laura Cummings 17:13 on soggy 3-mile course pace the team winners.
- NJ Ed Grant's New Jersey Week - Big winner at Shore Coaches meet, Christian Brothers Academy faces challenge of Fayetteville-Manlius NY at Manhattan
- PA Steel City Inv - NE#4 ranked Council Rock North boys, missing their #3 and #6 runners, were beaten by the meet hosts from Coatesville, 113-121. North's John Mahoney won the race in 16:20. Kyle Murray, Central Bucks South, was 2nd in 16:24. In the girls race, NE#9 Parkland held off a challenge from Chambersburg, 102-124. Chambersburg's Sarah Morrison won in 19:29.
Before the race, Parkland coach Loretta Dodson told her team: "If Lance Armstrong could win after being on the cover of Sports Illustrated, then we can handle being ranked #9 in the Northeast US." They could.

- Southeast Week Oct 2 - SE#8 Tucker Richmond VA boys stake big claim for higher ranking at Great American. Andrew Bumbalough 15:21 at Jesse Owens. SE#1 Lourdes FL girls finish behind four Texas teams at McNeil. SE#3 St. Paul's Mobile AL girls beat ranked teams at Jesse Owens. SE#9 Eleanor Roosevelt MD girls slip at William and Mary.

- NC Great American Cross Country Festival - Cary - biggest matchup of ranked teams of the season until the new Nike Team Nationals in December.

- Southwest Week Oct 2 - A sweep for Los Alamos NM (boys are SW#1 and girls are SW#2 US#4) on NM state meet course at Curtis Williams. SW#4 Page AZ boys and unranked Flowing Wells girls win at Doug Conley in AZ. SW#2 Mountain View UT boys and SW#1 US#2 Smoky Hill CO girls are both 3rd at Great American. SW#5 Denver South CO boys win weather-plagued Sweetheart Inv. SW#9 Cherry Creek CO boys 72 (Davis UT 77) and SW#3 Fremont UT girls 31 (Cherry Creek CO 43) win 5A at Orem Inv, but 1A-3A champ Judge Memorial Catholic UT boys win combined all-class scoring. Samantha Gaffney 18:44 follows up Stanford win with fastest girls time of day. Fastest boys are Brian McKenna and Pat Smyth, both at 15:50.

- Northwest Week Oct 2 - Sunfair lights up the weekend.
- WA Sunfair Invitational - Flathead MT girls, Auburn-Riverside WA boys, Brie Felnagle and Jordan McNamara win. Brie Felnagle catches Zoe Nelson, both breaking Sarah Schwald's meet record, but Zoe's NW#2 Flathead MT team beats Brie's NW#1 Bellarmine WA team. Unranked Auburn-Riverside WA boys top host Eisenhower Yakima WA, which was ranked 3rd in the Northeast last week.

Two of the nation's best runners, they both broke Sarah Schwald's course record, finishing in 17:11 and 17:22. (the finish clock apparently malfunctioned). Nelson set a swift pace but could not shake Felnagle, who came on to win in the last mile. Nelson's NW#2 Flathead MT team beat Felnagle's NW#1 Bellarmine WA 22-27 in 7-flight team scoring. |

Girls ROC - US#1 Saratoga NY 26 (2 3 6 7 8) crushed the field to leave no doubt that they are the best team in the country this year and, perhaps, any year. Saratoga had their five scorers in the first 14 finishers overall, led by Nicole Blood in 3rd. NE#3 Bethlehem NY 154 (12 18 20 41 63) finished second and SW#1 US#2 Smoky Hill CO, without injured ace Katelyn Kaltenbach, was third with 181 (4 5 39 61 72). |
Girls ROC - Warwick Valley NY jr Aislinn Ryan 16:57 broke away from Summit Frisco CO sr Whitney Anderson 17:24 late to win convincingly. Blood 17:31 ran behind the leaders most of the way. |

Boys ROC - Hoover AL sr Robert Bedsole 15:14 was an impressive winner, surging in front after the first mile and leading the rest of the way, a winner by 4 seconds over Middletown OH sr Jeff See 15:18. Tucker sr Michael Chapa 15:23 was third. All three were faster than last year's fastest boy, Ryan Deak 15:26. |
