97th Millrose Games
has new owner and new emphasis on youth, high school and colleges, with 60m dash to crown "Fastest HS Boy & Girl in New York."
And Marion Jones will return to competition after maternity leave.

National Track and Field Hall of Fame opens in New York with celebrity luncheon. Olympians of the past -- Billy Mills, Chandra Cheeseborough, and Al Oerter -- view their exhibits at the New York Armory. Big weekend culminates Saturday with the New Balance Games.

Brian Manley
HS running coach, football player and ultra marathoner tells his story of the Leadville Trail 100

With 90 miles under my belt, I bathe myself in the moment running solo along a beautiful mountain trail in the middle of the night, knowing that with each step, the finish line draws nearer this must be the epitome of bliss for an ultra-runner. I know it is for me. The solitary exertion is cleansing in a spiritual sense, and I embrace the experience, for I never emerge from these mountains after this race, quite the same.

Manley gets help from Smoky Hill Aurora CO runners Katelyn and Megan Kaltenbach, Brent Vaughn and Ryan Deak.

3 preps to run with elites in New Balance Games Saturday; HS miles still star studded
Elite race entries (men's 2 mile, men's mile, and women's mile) for the New Balance Games Saturday in the New York Armory include three high school runners. Central Catholic Portland OR sr Galen Rupp and Peru NY homeschooled sr Josh McDougal are entered in the New York Road Runners Club Record Challenge 2-mile. The race is being set up to encourage the preps to reach for a top 10 all time ranking. Kenyan Stephen Ondieki will set a 4:20 pace for the first mile, and Christian Hesch has been enlisted to pace the second mile. Saratoga NY soph Nicole Blood, defending Millrose Games high school mile champion, will run in the elite women's mile. Blood is the star of Saratoga's US#1 cross country team and indoor US#1 distance medley and 4x800 relays. Blood won the Yale Classic last Saturday in 4:54.33, and she leads the 2004 indoor DyeStat Elite national rankings at 3000 meters (9:47.58 ).
Despite the loss of three top runners to the elite races, the High School miles will still have star studded fields. John Jay NY sr Hakon Devries, winner of the Hispanic Games mile in 4:14.36, heads a field of 13 boys who are all under 4:20 for the season. The girls race features Bay Shore NY jr Laura Cummings, 4:56.94; Blood's Saratoga teammates Lindsay Ferguson (4:56.96 winner at Brown) and Ruby Solomon (4:58.19), and Tri Valley NY sr Heather Iatauro 4:57.81.

Nike Athlete of the Week
Nike AOW selections #1 of the 2004 indoor season are Newburgh NY sr Elzie Coleman and A.P. Randolph NY sr Natasha Hastings.

Arkansas Invitational, Jan 16-17 at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville AR
Galen Rupp runs 4:10.95, fastest of season by HS miler

by Rich Gonzalez on DyeStatCal
Don't be too surprised. Coach Alberto Salazar likely wasn't, nor prized pupil Galen Rupp, for that matter.
In prepping for the big two-mile challenge upcoming next weekend at the Armory in New York, Central Catholic High of Oregon senior Galen Rupp flashed some speed to place a very impressive third in the open field of the men's mile assembled for the Arkansas Invitational Jan 16 at the Tyson Center in Fayetteville. Rupp, the lone high schooler in the 10-runner field, trailed only winner Adam Perkins of Arkansas (4:09.04) and 35-year-old Oympic year hopeful Jason Pyrah of Nike (4:10.49) at the finish, officially posting 4:10.95, a lifetime best for an athlete focusing his undercover efforts over the two-mile and 3000-meter race distances a year ago. (left, Galen Rupp in black, trails Adam Perkins early in race.)
The clocking at the Arkansas meet for the FootLocker Cross-Country Nationals runner-up placer was the fourth-fastest prep undercover performer since 1998, joining acclaimed talents Alan Webb (national prep record 3:59.86 in 2001), Ryan Hall (4:09.46 in 2001) and Dathan Ritzehhein (4:10.5) in that select lineup during that stint. The mark was also the fastest ever by an Oregon prep indoors.
The miling effort at Arkansas is a mere teaser to a main event assault over two miles next weekend, when Rupp joins fellow prepster Josh McDougal of New York and an elite open field at the New Balance Games in the Armory, the same meet and locale where Webb smashed the prep indoor mile record three years ago. Rupp has been training extremely well in recent months, and could take a daring go-for-broke stab toward the fathomed national prep indoor 2-mile record of 8:40.0, set by Gerry Lindgren four decades ago! Rupp supplanted McDougal (4:13 and change) as the indoor prep U.S. leader for 2004 on Friday night.
With the improved fitness, Rupp aims to shear away what remains of the diminishing gap between him and Lindgren on the all-time lists. Rupp's stunning 8:12.3 performance for 3000 meters at the 2003 U-W Last Chance Meet last March was the fourth-fastest in indoor prep history, trailing only national indoor recordholder Lindgren (8:06.3, converted), national outdoor two-mile recordholder Jeff Nelson of California (8:07.6 converted for 3k indoors), and multi-time national recordholder Webb (8:10.98 converted hand-timed mark en route to two miles).
Rupp's 8:12.3 of a year ago, if using one of the more popular standardized conversion tables, carries out to an 8:51.7 for two miles. Given his improved showing at the shorter distance on this day -- a fine sign from someone not heralded as a top miler by any stretch -- his progress piques the interest levels for what's in store next weekend. Stay tuned.
Rich Gonzalez' followup interview:
Rupp says he lost focus on last lap and needs to be mentally tougher.

  • AZ Northern Arizona University Invitational - Wilson Long Beach girls star in college meet.
    Ebony Collins runs 8.41 60H
Former age group star Ebony Collins had a sensational debut as a freshman for Wilson Long Beach CA Saturday (1/17) at Flagstaff AZ. Running in the Springco Invitational at Northern Arizona University, Collins streaked through the 60m hurdles in 8.41 in the prelims, bettering the national freshman record (8.70 by Jasmine Bynum CO in 2000 and placing her second on the all time list in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK annual (the record is 8.33 by by three girls: Charmaine Walker NJ 1997, Nichole Denby CA 1999, and Ronnetta Alexander NY in 2003). Collins was slower in the final (9.19), but that was run 5 minutes after she won the 400 in 55.85, beating Arizona State's Christina Hardeman, the 2002 California state and Golden West champion. Collins also finished fifth in the 200 in 25.13. Carol Rodriguez, who transferred from Western CA to Wilson this year, won the 60m dash in 7.64 and was third in the 200 in 24.72.

Saratoga NY girls move up to 4th all time in DMR -
Andrew Jesien MD and Nicole Blood NY win miles -
Kevin Tschirhart NY and Laura Cummings NY win 3000m

"Every time we step on the track we're going for the record," says Saratoga coach Linda Kranick -- Rich Gonzalez interview.

749 Andrew Jesien MD 4:22.02 and Gavin Coombs CT 4:22.19 hit the finish line of the Yale Classic mile. Earlier in the race, a girl crossed the track in front of Coombs and Jesien, causing Jesien to stop and fall back several meters.

New Balance Games - preps run with elites

The New Balance Games, which was the scene 3 years ago of Alan Webb's indoor record 3:59.86 mile against elite athletes, may be the platform again this year for a HS athlete running great times with elites. An elite New York Road Runners Record Challenge 2-mile race has been added for the 9th running of the meet at the New York Armory January 24, and two high school runners are entered in hopes of climbing the all time lists in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK annual. The prep runners are Galen Rupp, a senior at Central Catholic high school in Portland OR, and Josh McDougal, a home schooled senior from Peru NY. Rupp, who was second in the Foot Locker cross country finals in San Diego in December, could hope for a historical parallel. Webb was second at Foot Locker nationals in December 2000 before setting his record at the New Balance Games in January. McDougal, who was fourth at Foot Locker nationals, ran a 4:13.79 US#1 mile at the Dartmouth Relays on January 11. The only high school runners to crack the all time indoor 2-mile top 10 list in recent years are Alan Webb (8:45.19 at the Nike Indoor Classic in 2001) and Dathan Ritzenhein (8:50.4 in 2001). The record is 8:40.0 by Gerry Lindgren in 1964, followed by Jeff Nelson's 8:42.7 in 1979 and Webb.

Saratoga NY sophomore Nicole Blood may also test the elite waters in the women's mile. After Blood won the 3000 meters in a romp in the Hispanic Games on January 10, her coach Art Kranick confirmed she was entered in the women's mile at New Balance, but said he still had to check to make sure she will not incur eligibility problems in New York state by running in the elite race. Blood won last year's HS girls mile in New Balance meet record time of 4:54.78. She followed that up by winning last year's Millrose Games high school mile in 4:52.00, second fastest girls time ever in that meet.

Rupp warmed up for New York by running 4:10.95 in an open mile at the University of Arkansas Invitational January 16.

William & Mary press release:
WILLIAMSBURG, VA (January 13, 2004) -- The William and Mary Athletics Department and track and field program announced today that the College will not host the Colonial Relays over the next two year period. As one of the East Coast¹s premier collegiate meets, the break is needed to upgrade facilities and financing to allow the meet to be conducted at its current prestigious level. The hiatus will be used to organize and fund the refurbishment of the track at Zable Stadium and allow the process to be conducted smoothly, without the interruption of scheduling the work around a major meet. The Colonial Relays will resume upon completion of the project.

Elzie Coleman 46.58 national record !!!
Newburgh NY sr Elzie Coleman trounced a crack field in the Hispanic Games to break the legendary Billy Reed's 1986 record of 46.84 for 400 meters. (Reggie Witherspoon's 46.11 at the Armory last year was run on a 3-turn stagger and is not considered the record in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK annual.) Coleman came off the break with a clear lead and was never threatened. Jason Richardson of Texas, running his first indoor race on the oval, was second in 47.75 and Adian Sanderson of NJ third in 48.38.

Leaders of Tomorrow

Hispanic Games will go to 2-day format
Good news to fans and athletes of the Hispanic Games comes from Dr. Norbert Sander, president of the New York Armory Foundation. Dr. Sander announced that the 11th Hispanic Games next year will be run over two days. The meet became bogged down in its own success last Saturday when dozens of heats put the meet more than 3 hours behind, even though entries from 50 schools were turned down. Runners in the top Invitational mile and 400 meters had to warm up more than once to get ready to run. Next year, the freshman, sophomore, and novice athletes will be moved to Sunday, which will have separate team championships.

  • PA PA Week Jan 10 - Don Rich's weekly roundup.
  • VA CNU Showcase - Bethel girls 1:41.59, fastest 4x200 in the US this season, plus 3:58.68 4x400 US#5. Lashawn Merritt doubles 6.40 US#4 and 34.60 US#2. Britni Spruill 18-9.5 LJ US#3.

North Carolina coaching legend Russell Blunt dies at 95
North Carolina lost one of its greatest coaching legends Wednesday when Russell Blunt of Durham died at Duke Hospital following an extended illness. Blunt coached high school athletics, primarily at Hillside High in Durham, for more than 60 years. He would have been 96 years old in April. Blunt's Hornets won 17 state titles, including the 1997 N.C. High School Athletic Association indoor track championship, his last before retiring in 1998. He was 88 years old when he won the title, making him the oldest coach in the nation to win a state championship. [Tim Stevens, Raleigh News-Observor]
