Predicted Friday and Saturday: highs from mid-80s to low 90s.
Fortunately, the seeded sweepstakes races are scheduled late and early. Six Div 3-4-5 sweeps races run from 4:15 pm to 6 pm Friday. Four Div 1-2 sweepstakes races run from 9 am to 10 am Saturday.
Olympic 10k champion BILLY MILLS will be at Mt. SAC to meet the kids.

Mt. SAC retrospective - California prep guru Doug Speck goes to the file room to profile earlier meets in the long history of Mt. SAC (It isn't true he has attended them all).
Monday: Mt. SAC 25 years ago - 1978. The boys winner was Burbank High's legendary Jeff Nelson (left), who went on to set the still-standing national HS 2-mile record (8:36.3) the following May. Read the story to see how many miles Jeff ran in the summer of '78.
Tuesday: 20 years ago - 1983 - Jesus Gutierrez and Joni Mooney.
Wednesday: 15 years ago - 1988 - New Jersey's Christian Brothers Academy has a successful trip.

  • CA Orange County Championships - Individual winners of varsity sweeps were Sunny Hills' sr Claire Kim 17:45 3m (with twin sister Stacy on left) and El Toro jr Brandon Bethke 14:58 (alongside Michael Hadden on right). Best team times of the day were by Dana Hills boys 79:55 and Esperanza girls 92:45.
  • CA Bella Vista Bronco Invitational. - Nevada runners pour down Interstate 80 to claim trophies at Sierra College in Rocklin. Lawrence sisters (senior Collier 18:46 5k, freshman Marie 18:47) lead Reno NV girls 18 (1-2-4-5-6-8-10). Galena NV boys 40 (Reno NV 44).
  • CO Regionals - Denver West boys 25 (Cherry Creek 54), ranked 4th in the US by The Harrier, and US#3 Smoky Hill Aurora girls 35 (Cherry Creek 40) won the 5A Metro South region easily at the hilly Vielle Lake course in Boulder. Individual winners were Smoky Hill's Ryan Deak 15:57 (Denver West's Mohamed Ige 15:59) and Katelyn Kaltenbach 18:36 (winning by 36 seconds). Bradley Harkrader 16:46 wins 5A North.
  • DE Bellevue Inv - Brandywine jr Jessica Leitsch 18:24 3.1m breaks course record. Tatnall Wilmington sr Kyle Kershner 15:57.
  • GA Georgia Coaches Rankings and Highlights by Andrew Hudson - State meet showdowns loom for 5A boys teams Brookwood, Collins Hill and Walton, all coming off big wins this week, and Charlie Dickhaus and Ryley Miller individually.
  • IA Iowa Conferences - Roosevelt DesMoines doubles in CIML Metro, with US#8 boys scoring a near perfect 17 led by Kiel Uhl 15:37 5k. US#15 Iowa City West girls score 16 (1-2-3-4-6) led by Sarah Wickman 14:39 4k. Iowa City sweeps MVC Valley.
  • IL DuPage Valley Conf - Naperville North runners won both races in swift times: sr Daniel Curran 15:06 (3.05m) for a meet record and soph Shannon Phelan 17:59.
  • IL Illinois week by Scotty Bush - All the top athletes ran well. Andrew sr Matt Withrow posted another sub-15 performance at the SICA West conference meet at 14:45 3m, winning by 20 seconds over a strong field. US#2 York put five runners in the top six, led by jr Sean McNamara's 14:52 3m at the West Suburban Silver Conference. Illinois #2 Barrington girls beat #1 Palatine at conference 39-46, with the individual race going the same way: Barrington's Christina Fiduccia 17:16 3m over Palatine's Amy Laskowske 17:29.  Next week: some awesome matchups at regionals.

  • KS Kansas week by Anthony Bozarth -Kansas #1 Shawnee Mission NW boys win all divisions of Sunflower League. Girls team wins too, with both varsity teams scoring 30 points. Shawnee Mission South sr Connie Abbott 15:09 4k on soft grounds at Rimrock Farm. Trisa Nickoley looks toward fourth straight 5A state title after winning Centennial League.
  • KY Christian County Ch. -Greenwood soph Michael Eaton 15:38 5k over Muhlenberg North sr Jacob Fortney 15:48 in a dual of the state's top two runners. Warren East sr Heather Coulter 18:47 was a 21-second winner over Greenwood's Natalie Leeper. Greenwood won both team titles.
  • KY Sacred Heart Academy Meet - Maddie Schueler 17:47 5k at Seneca Park.
  • KY St. Henry's Inv -Connor Hebron KY soph Katherine Alcorn 18:25 5k wins by 38 seconds. Keith Knapp 16:04 leads Lloyd HS 62. Scott girls 54.
  • MD Georgetown Prep Inv - St. Alban's boys 96. Zach Martinez, Gaithersburg HS 16:10. Northwest girls 79. Wootton Rockville soph Michele Levy 18:52.
  • MI OK Silver Conference - Kelloggsville sr Nicole Bush 17:41 5k won her fourth straight conference title.
  • MI Upper Peninsula State Meet - 2-time Foot Locker national finalist Amber Smith 17:54 5k wins by 1:53.
  • MN Big 9 Conf - Winona sr Garrett Heath 15:17 5k.
  • MN Section 6AA - Hopkins jr Mike Krisch 15:56 5k course record at hilly Gale Woods Park. Minnesota #1 Eden Prairie boys win. Minnetonka freshman Alison Liewen wins race after favored Shannon Bergstedt and Jenna Carlson falter late.
  • MO Big 8 Conference - Twelve boys broke 16 minutes on the 5k Blue Springs Lake course where that has been the "badge of courage" (course record is 15:08 by Matt Tegenkamp; Adam Perkins ran 15:35 there last year). The first three runners and five of the first 11 were from US#11 Liberty, led by senior Brian Graybill's 15:20.
  • MT Montana State Meet - Flathead Kalispell jr Zoe Nelson won her third straight AA state title and led her US#10 rated team to an easy victory. Nelson won by 44 seconds in 17:36 to lead lead five Flathead girls in the first 15 for a 34-point score. In the boys race, Flathead's Matt Parker 15:39 caught Helena's Jon Metropoulos 15:41 in the last 400 meters, but Helena 49 ended Flathead's reign of six straight state championships..
  • NM Santa Fe Invitational - Los Alamos sweeps with US#2 girls scoring 30 points (1,4,5,7,13) and the boys 26 (2,4,5,7,8).
  • NM Coaches Poll 10/21 - US#2 Los Alamos girls and Albuquerque Academy boys top the lists.
  • NV Weekly Southern Nevada Top 10 - Centennial boys, Green Valley girls are #1.
  • NY Boys Eastern States - The assault on the all-time Van Cortlandt Park list continued as Hunterdon Central NJ sr Chris Pannone 12:22.9 (2.5m) and Cardinal O'Hara PA sr Steve Hallinan 12:30.0 ran 1-2. LaSalle PA won the team title with 72 points (Cardinal O'Hara 103, Hunterdon 130, Msgr Farrell 152).
  • NY McDougal clan - There are three McDougals running now and they finished 1-2-12 in the USATF Adirondack 5k champinships at Saratoga Springs Sunday (10-19). 1. Josh McDougal 15:02, 2. Jordan McDougal 15:27, and 12. 13-year-old Andrew McDougal 17:16.
  • NY Nassau Coaches Inv - Holy Trinity NY jr Katie DeCamillo 18:52 5k ran the fastest time at Bethpage State Park this season.
  • NY Argyle Inv - Host Argyle girls, ranked 8th in the US, posted a perfect 15 in the first Argyle Invitational, placing the first five and seven of the top eight runners. Connor Farrell16:07 led the Bay Port-Blue Point boys 44 to a win.
  • NY New York state girls rankings - Same leaders: Saratoga, Honeoye Falls Lima, Skaneateles, and Argyle.
  • NY New York City boys rankings - Monsignor Farrell is #1.
  • NV Southern Nevada League Championships - Centennial jr Blake Schlotzhauer 15:24 3m. Bishop Gorman sr Christa Avena 18:35.
  • OH Districts - Minster sr Sunni Olding 17:21 5k, knocking 47 seconds off the Spencerville course record with a 5k PR and the fastest 5k in the US this year.
  • OR District Meets - In Mount Hood district at Centennial, Ryan Vail wins as Galen Rupp rests sore ankle, but US#8 Central Catholic Portland still wins team title. Analiese Chapa is girls winner.,
  • PA Pennsylvania Week by Don Rich - Wins by Frances Koons, Lisa Giacometti, Craig Miller, James O'Toole, Kate Vernon, Kahke Mealy, Christine Morelli, Elizabeth Kearns, and Chris Spooner.
  • RI Brown Invitational - Nicole Blood 16:52.3 5k (Lindsay Donaldson 16:54) beats strong field to lead US#1 Saratoga NY 27 (1-4-6-7-9, with US#16 Bay Shore 87) to girls championship. Bishop Hendricken boys 148. Tully Central jr Dominic Luka 15:03.
  • TX Rick Neill Memorial Inv - Plano jr Scott MacPherson 14:26 3m. Plano West sisters Erin Bedell 11:05 and Lyndsey Bedell 11:07 won the girls race.
  • TX Sam Houston State Inv - The Woodlands TX boys, ranked #1 in the US by The Harrier, won with 30 points (2-4-5-9-10) with South #10 Kingwood 79 second. Klein sr Erik Stanley 15:38 3m won individual honors, 6 seconds ahead of The Woodlands' Brian Sullivan. South #3 Kingwood 47 won the girls race.
  • VT Burlington Inv - St. Johnsbury Academy sr Susan Dunklee 18:17 5k.
  • WA Tacoma City Championships - Wyatt Academy sr Tom Wyatt 15:27 5k on rainy, windy day at Fort Steilacom.
  • WA Washington rankings 10/19 -Nationally ranked teams top 4A charts. Boys: 1. Eisenhower Yakima (US#9), 2. Mead Spokane (US#17). Girls: 1. Snohomish (US#12), 2. Kamiakin (US#21).
  • WY North Conference - Gillette swept team titles at Cody on hilly 5k course with rough trails. Gillette's Cole Weaver 17:14 won the boys race and Natrona County jr Sarah Balfour 19:25 the girls.

 

Shadrack Kiptoo debuts in New Mexico
NM Albuquerque City Championships - In his first high school race in the United States, Shadrack Kiptoo set a course record of 15:21 (3.025 miles), winning by 53 seconds and making a hilly, tough course look like "a walk in the park" to an opposing coach.. Albuquerque Academy swept the team titles.. Kiptoo, who came to Albuquerque from Kenya a year ago to join friends and relatives from Eldoret Kenya, was just ruled eligible by the New Mexico Activities Association. Kiptoo runs for La Cueva High School, whose coach Eddy Hellebuyck holds US Masters records from 5k through the marathon. Hellebuyck, a Belgian who is now a US citizen, was the top American finisher at the Boston Marathon last year. Kiptoo ran a 14:46 5k in the Lobo Invitational earlier this year.

The Harrier
National Team Rankings list #3 - Saratoga NY takes over #1 on girls list. The Woodlands TX boys retain #1 on the boys list, with Denver West CO moving up from 10th to 4th. All three were impressive at the Great American, and Saratoga followed that up with a record setting performance in the Girls Eastern States Championship at the Manhattan Invitational Saturday.
Girls - Former #1 Los Alamos NM has not travelled and had an unexpectedly narrow 9-point win in-state at the Albuquerque Academy Inv Sept 27. Newcomers in the top 10 are #4 Valparaiso IN, #8 Argyle NY, which ran second to Saratoga at both Great American and Manhattan, #9 College Park CA, and #10 Flathead MT. Sultana CA, Snohomish WA and Desert Vista AZ dropped out of the top 10.
Boys - There was less change in the boys list as #8 Roosevelt DesMoines IA is the only newcomer to the top 10 and Mead WA is the only team to fall out of the top 10.

On Sept 11, the then unranked Iowa City West girls "upset" The Harrier's pre-season US#10 Iowa City High by one point. The Harrier then moved West to US#11 in the Sept 22 rankings, one notch ahead of City High. In the MVC Super Meet Thursday 10/9, West made it more decisive, winning by 12 points, 54-66, with Cedar Falls also scoring 66 points and beating City on the sixth runner tie breaker. West's Janet Dobyns finished in fourth place in 15:02, leading a 34-second spread for West's top scorers. Wahlert Dubuque sr Sara Fassbinder won the race in 14:07. West freshman Sarah Wickman finished an amazing 6th after being spiked and losing her shoe at the start and dropping to last place as she stopped to recover her shoe.

The 64 elite runners who will toe the line in San Diego December 13 will come from four regionals. The top 8 boys and top 8 girls from each region qualify for the national finals. DyeStat has reviewed the contenders and developed lists of Foot Locker Favorites in each region. Initially, we have 150 FLF's based on 2002 regional results, 2003 outdoor mile and 2-mile times, and our own judgment. These are the runners we believe have the best chance of getting to San Diego based on their performances to date. We will update the lists periodically based on performances during the cross country season.
