Maryland v. Virginia is the highlight of many events, with North Carolina, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York and DC thrown into the mix as 2,000 athletes converge on Interstate 81 in the Blue Ridge of southwestern Virginia. Prince George's County MD teams will continue their argument from last week's county championships between Eleanor Roosevelt, Largo, Suitland, and C.H. Flowers. They are joined by MD private school power Dematha. From Georgia comes New Horizon TC, with Courtney Champion (US#1 at 55 meters after her LSU win) and Reggie Witherspoon (a 46.08 400m man last spring). Mumford Detroit journeys down from Michigan hoping to duplicate last year's successes: Kenneth Ferguson has graduated, but Jimmie Jones is US#1 at 800 meters (1:55.25). Woodrow Wilson carries the District of Columbia flag. North Carolina sends sophomore sprint sensation J-Mee Samuels and miler Matt Debole of the powerhouse Mount Tabor squad. Virginia standouts include Bethel HS, Yvette Lewis, US#1 55D Joe Robinson, Andrew Keino, and Alex Tatu. Pennsylvania claims the top-seeded pole vaulter, Andrew Rademacher (15-7). Heather Iatauro of New York is making the longest trip to run in this meet.

Super Bowl link to high school track
Dexter Jackson, MVP of the Super Bowl for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ran in the Mobile Challenge of Champions.in 1995. Jackson took 2nd in the 110 hurdles in 14.49 and 3rd in the 300 hurdles in 38.47 for Shanks high school, Quincy FL.

Girls - Westbury Houston jr Jessica Ohanaja 7.50 posted the fastest 60 meter dash time of the season. Skyline Dallas TX soph Krystin Lacy, who had the previous US#1 time (7.55) opted for the 200 and won that in 24.36 US#3. Magnet Baton Rouge LA soph Katrina Taylor beat the meet record in the 400 in 55.85 and was faster in the prelims at 55.66. Jenks OK sr Brianna McLeod, who gave up swimming for track this season, won the 1600 in 4:58.71 and then ran second in a very close 800 to Magnet Baton Rouge LA's Katara Rosby, 2:18.57 to 2:18.69. Skyline Dallas 1:40.51 4x200 US#1. Magnet Baton Rouge LA sr Reanna Townsend 5-6 HJ. Donovan Kilmartin 24-0.5 US#1 - The nation's best decathlete had a nice all around effort with 6-11 HJ, 8.49 60H (42-inch hurdles), and 24-0.5. His long jump series got better with each jump: 23-1, 23-3, 23-11, and 24-0.5, with the last jump taking the national lead in DyeStat Elite rankings. Julene Bailey had a 12-6 pole vault, 4 inches below her US#1 mark, and soph Megan Perner cleared 11-0.

Air Time's new dynamic duo - Air Time club coach Jeff Robbins' latest pair of elite girl pole vaulters tied for US#2 in the college meet at Boston U's new Track and Tennis Center. Lowell MA sr Ashley Nolet and Concord MA jr Anna McFarlane each cleared 12-7.5, with Nolet winning on fewest misses. Only Nampa ID sr Julene Bailey has jumped higher this season (12-10). Nolet and McFarlane have stepped into the shoes of Samantha Shepard and Molly Lederman, who set national records for Air Time over the past several years.

A.P. Randolph NY jr Natasha Hastings runs 1:11.84 for a new national 500 meter record, finishing 4th in elite women's race. Vineland NJ boys 3:27.60 SMR, third fastest team ever (Muir Pasadena CA 1997 3:24.69 and Muir Pasadena CA 1996 3:25.90 and 3:27.80) and 3:19.07 4x400 (first under 3:20 this season). HS elite miles go to Brian Dalpiaz 4:15.73 MR (Gavin Coombs CT 4:15.91, top 6 under 4:20) and Nicole Blood 4:54.78 MR (9 seconds ahead of Catha Mullen). Newburgh NY boys 1:28.52 4x200 (US#13 all time team) to improve on 2003 US#1 mark. "I had no idea how fast I was going until I looked up at the clock coming off the final turn," Michta said. "Now I know that I can get that National Record." Chamblee GA sr Mary Ann Erigha came out of the 6th section to place sixth overall in the 200 meters at 24.99 US#7 and also ran 7.70 60D US#6. Cummings Burlington NC had two girls in the 60m hurdles: sr Chandra Pulliam 8.95 US#7 and jr Dominique Price 9.29.

Nike Sprint Summit
9-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis will be there
This year's Nike Indoor Championships at Landover MD March 14-16 have a new attraction which the sponsors call "the sprint clinic of the future.". The Nike Sprint Summit clinic with Nike athletes and leading sprint coaches will be held Friday March 14 from 7:30 to 10 pm. Admission is free to athletes registered for NIC, $10 to others. Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis heads the list of Nike athletes who will participate. Coaches include 2004 Olympic staff member Orin Richburg; Colorado Flyers coach Tony Wells; Houston Westbury girls coach Rose Brimmer; and Russell Bates, Winslow Township NJ High School.
“King Carl” Lewis said he is looking forward to the Summit. “It was a big deal to go to these kinds of meets,” he said, referring to the Nike Indoor Championships.

Running in the NAU Opener at Northern Arizona University, Hamilton AZ jr Michael Hilbe ran the fastest 400 meters of the season while placing 7th against college runners. Twenty minutes later, he was second in the 200 at 22.33.

Zach Pollinger (left), a Junior from Mahwah, NJ, finished 2nd in the Open Men's 3000m race walk His time of 12:42.06 qualifies him for the USATF Indoor Nationals. Zach will be racing in the Millrose Games in the Open Mile Race Walk. Zach's time is also better
than the existing Young Men's (17-18) record (Kevin Eastler 12:54.88 on 7/13/94).
