Open Letter to High School Track & Field Athletes

The weekend of March 10, 2000 will see two great national meets for our high school athletes:

The New Balance National Scholastic Championship at the New York Armory and The Nike Indoor Classic in Bloomington IN.

We all prefer there be only one such meet.  Hopefully, unification is in the not too distant future.  In the meanwhile, top flight athletes will have to choose.

The Nike Indoor Classic will be an excellent event in a fine facility.  The Nike Meet Directors will, as usual, conduct a first-class track and field meet and are aggressively recruiting for it.  We, of course, would hope you choose to come to New York.  THE ARMORY is in many ways the national shrine of indoor track and field, dating to 1909.  More track and field competitions have been staged here than in any other building in America.  After a renovation costing in excess of twelve million dollars, THE NEW ARMORY proudly offers for its eighty five (85) meet season a 200 meter internationally banked MONDO track, sprinting straight-aways and field event arenas as good as any worldwide.  Many Olympians have recently run here, concluding it is the fastest indoor track they have ever run on.   In addition, New York is an exciting place to visit and the ambience, music, crowd spirit and tradition during our meets make for a truly magical experience!

But if you choose to go instead to Bloomington, we wish you the very best.  It too, will be a memorable weekend.  One can only ask that for both meets, the commitments of the athletes, their coaches and families are respected, free of outside pressure and excessive offers.  In the end, the comparison of these competitions will be based not on hype but on the performances achieved.  Until then, let us all work together, positively committed to keeping Track & Field the #1 high school sport in America.

Respectfully submitted,

Norb Sander, M.D.
