Pennsylvania athletes may be taking a break from school, but not from
their chosen track and field events as evidenced by some very fine
performances at the YES (Year-End-Special) meet held Tuesday, December
28 at Lehigh University. The annual meet attracts the best from all
schools in the Greater Philadelphia area, plus a few from the western
part of PA.

While the standards for qualifying for both major indoor national
championships are very close, the National Scholastic Indoor (NSI)
standard is in many cases slightly more stringent than those for the
Nike Indoor Classic (NIC).

Sponsored by the Track & Field Coaches Association of Greater
Philadelphia, Inc. (the organization led by Bob Burdette), the YES meet
did not disappoint with quite a few national caliber showings.

Sprints and Dashs: (All time FAT)

In the 200 meter dash, Norristown's Ernie Terrell led start to finish in
a blazing 22.38. Other NSI qualifying performances were turned in by
William Tennent's Cassie Richards, and Penn Wood's Danielle Bobo in the
60 Meter Hurdles, with 9:01 and 9:20 respectively.

In the 400, Troy Roberson of William Tennent posted a 49:74 NSI time,
winning easily.

Middle Distance and Distance:

Pat Nash of Cardinal O'Hara followed up his 1:57.6 NSI qualifying
December 11 Haverford College 800 with an easy win in a time of 1:58.65,
following an opening split of 57 low.

Penn Wood's Danielle Rodgers made a strong early showing with a 2:19.69
NIC qualifier in the 800. Six runners were under the DyeStat elite time
of 2:23.

In the Girls 3000, PA AAAA Cross Country Champion and future NC State
runner, Josianne Lauber of Oxford (10:39.38), dueled the entire way
before pulling out a sprint finish over Penn Trafford's Kristin Price
(10:41.41). Both are NIC qualifiers. Kristin is from District 7, and was
15th at the state XC meet. Both are seniors.

Relays:

The William Penn team of Christina Smith, Juanita Broaddus, Tyeisha
Thomas and Madonna Patterson dominated the Sprint Medley Relay with an
NSI qualifier of 4:19.32. Later in the meet, quartets from William Penn
ripped through the competition with a 4:01.06 4 x 400 meter relay (no
split over 61), and the 4 x 200 meter relay in 1:46.1. Both are NSI
qualifying times.

North Penn's boys won in a NIC qualifier 4 x 800 of 8:17.4.

Field Events:

Mark Upshaw of Abington, dominated the field in a 47-6 meet record and
NSI qualifier triple jump.

In the girl's high jump, William Tennent's Tychelle Rudolph cleared 5-6
easily. The jump qualifies her for either NSI or NIC.

Kevin Kelly of Strath Haven made 14-0 in the pole vault, an NSI
qualifier. And in the shot put, Phoenixville's Jim Collins threw an NIC
ticket 53-6 1/4.

Delaware County's girls next compete in the county championships,
Tuesday, January 4 at Haverford College.

All area schools return to action January 7 and 8 at various venues.
