Brandon Brown:
the miracle continues
A year ago, high jumper Brandon Brown of Flint MI was in an auto accident and doctors were ready to amputate his foot. Instead, he came to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. Through surgery and therapy his foot was saved and Brandon jumped in this year's Golden South. MORE
Proceeds from the Golden South Classic benefit the Pediatric Sports Medicine Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
| Meet records earn Jack Whitt and Octavious Freeman MVP awards
At the end of a long day, the crowd left happy after a string of stellar performances and the announcer's report on the Orlando Magic's victory in the NBA Eastern Conference final. The best performances were by sr Jack Whitt of Norman OK and soph Octavious Freeman of Lake Wales FL.
Whitt had the stage to himself in the intermission between afternoon prelims and evening finals. Entering the competition at 16 feet, Whitt progressed smoothly through 17 feet, where Florida record holder Mike Vani dropped out. After making 17-4, Whitt set the bar at 17-10 and cleared easily on his first attempt, breaking the meet record of 17-9.75 set by Pat Manson in 1986. Three unsuccessful tries for a national record at 18-3.5 did not put a damper on Whitt's day. He will have three more cracks at Tommy Skipper's record (18-3) at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque next week, Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro NC June 20 and USA Nationals in Eugene OR June 25.
Freeman swept the 100 and 200 as a freshman last year and repeated this year, setting a meet record in the 100 at 11.48 +1.1, second best time in the US this year, and following in the 200 at 23.78 US#10.
Other doubles were hung up by Neaman Wise FL 13.99 +1.1 110H and 52.76 400H, Brianna Frazier FL 54.56 400 and 39-0 TJ, and Brittany Harrell MS 14.31 100H and 5-4 HJ. Monsignor Pace FL boys won the 4x100 easily in 40.65, just a few ticks off their US#1 time of 40.54.

Meet's 33rd running features five US#1 performers:
- Jack Whitt OK is the sixth high school pole vaulter to top 18 feet (18-00.25) and he is inching toward the national record (18-3 by Tommy Skipper OR at the 2003 Golden West). See Whitt stats.
- Charlene Lipsey NY, last year's MVP with a meet record 800, is US#1 this year at 2:05.83. The Golden South will be a warmup for the New York state meet June 12-13. Lipsey stats
- Dentarius Locke FL 20.58 200 won the Florida 4A title for the second straight year and he doubled in the 100 (10.32 US#5) this year. Locke stats.
- Octavious Freeman FL, only a sophomore, has a 11.09 nwi 100 meter time, which would be a national record if it were wind legal. She is also US#5 in the 200 at 23.66 nwi. Her only times this year with a wind gauge were run into headwinds -- 11.73 -1.8 and 24.22 -2.4 at the Florida state meet.
