Southern Regional NJ junior kicks past Canadian Jessica Parry with 150 meters to go to win with authority.

Smith follows in teammate's footsteps - Story, photos by John Nepolitan

In 2007, Danielle Tauro led a 1-2 punch for Southern Regional(NJ) as she led her teammate Jillian Smith over the line. Tauro is now at the University of Michigan and Smith learned well from her, kicking away from Jessica Parry (London, Ontario, Canada) over the final 150 meters for a new USA #1 time of 4:48.83. (continued below)

Caitlin Lane leads the pack early

Early in the race, though, Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, NY) towed the field through the first four laps, passing 400 in 1:12 and 800 in 2:27.0. But that did little to shake off any of the 11 entrants. Just past the halfway point, Parry jumped into the lead and that single move started to string the field out.

Passing 1000 meters in 3:04, Parry had a slight lead over Smith, who was clear of the rest of the pack. At 1200 meters (3:42.1), little changed as Parry still had the lead, but Smith was inching closer. Behind the lead pair, Mary Kate Champagne (Seton Catholic, NY) was at the front of the chase pack, which now had started to truly splinter.

With just one lap to go, Smith had gotten right to the outside shoulder of Parry and looked ready to strike. With 150 meters to go, that attack happened and there would be no catching the New Jersey junior as she crossed the line in a new indoor personal best time of 4:48.83 – which also happens to be just 2 seconds off her outdoor personal best. She closed in a swift 31 seconds for the final 200 meters.

Quotes:

Jillian Smith
“I knew somebody was going to take it out and my plan was to just sit and I think everybody did what they wanted to do – have a fast race….Parry did a great three laps, keeping the pace up, and I just kept moving my arms faster and looking up there…the last lap to go I was just hammering…I get worried … every little move in the race, last year there was a lot of aggression in the race, this year the race calmed down and it was a lot easier to get around people which was better for everybody…I am really excited; I did not think I was going to run that fast…Being able to talk to her (Tauro) with all of her experience helps me a lot….every year, people are getting faster and faster so you never know what to expect.”
