California dominates with 11 of 20 qualifiers

by Steve Brand

Led by champions Jordan Hasay and Chris Schwartz, California dominated the Foot Locker West Regionals today, grabbing 11 of the 20 qualifying spots heading into next Saturday’s 30th National Championships in San Diego.

When Hasay took out the mile in a relaxed 5:42, the rest of the field might have thought the three-time Foot Locker West Regional champion was vulnerable.  Wrong.

Like boys champion Chris Schwartz, she had plenty left at the finish as Hasay, from San Luis Obispo Mission College Prep, became the first four-time West Regional champion, covering the hilly 5,000-meter Mt. SAC course in 18:02.

That was 10 seconds faster than runnerup Alex Dunne of San Clemente, Ca.

Schwartz, who barely finished his state championship race last week in placing seventh, roared into the lead and the Bakersfield runner finished strong enough to hold off Arizona’s Brian Shrader, 15:43 to 15:44.

Both races were won in the last half mile coming off Reservoir Hill.

Trevor Dunbar, who led for much of the race, became the second Alaskan in history to qualify for the 30th Foot Locker National Championships, finishing third in 14:46.

California ran away with team scoring by state with 24 points in the boys race and 22 in the girls.
