The Foot Locker Midwest Girls race took off as expected, with all the pieces in place for a great race. This is Foot Locker, and anything can happen.

The early front runners were as expected, with Air Academy CO senior Allie McLaughlin taking the early lead on the snowy opening hill, followed closely by two time Foot Locker Finalist and Parkway Central MO jr Emily Sisson.

The pair made their way through the twists and turns of the University of Wisconsin Parkside Cross Country course, making a slight separation from the 3rd-7th-place runners. The chase pack included Mid East Champion and senior Chelsea Oswald of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit OH, Grand Haven MI junior speedster Becca Addison, and state champions Lindsay Flanagan (Illinois) of Lake Park HS, and Megan Goethals (Michigan) of Rochester.
McLaughlin and Sisson went through the first mile in 5:35 and 5:37, respectively. The chase pack remained in touch, coming through between 5:42 and 5:44. As the runners got to the 1.5 mile mark, they exited the snowy path and entered onto a muddy downhill as they wound through the twists, turns and rolling hills of 5000 meter course.
McLaughlin, an excellent hill runner, continued to lead Sisson through the 2 mile, coming through in 11:12, followed by Sissson in 11:13, and Goethals in 11:16.
The course at Parkside takes a sharp left, heads downhill to the three-mile mark, before finishing on a 200-meter incline. This is where things began to change for the 4'10" McLaughlin. Sisson took advantage of the downhill and moved into first. Coming up the hill, it was clear that Sisson was going to make another trip to Balboa Park, but what wasn't seen was the lanky girl in pink coming on strong.

Goethals had passed McLaughlin with 100 meters to go and took that momentum past Sisson, passing her in the last 25 meters to capture the title, running 17:31 to Sisson's 17:33.
Goethals appeared to be in shock afterwards.
"When I crossed the line, I thought, Wow, this is so cool,” she said. A big DyeStat fan, she had been following the elite lists. "I figured Allie was going to be the toughest one to beat and that there are a lot of good girls like Emily, Ashlie (Decker), and Katie (Flood, who opted not to run). so I knew it was going to be tough."
Ohio's Chelsea Oswald overtook McLaughlin to finish 3rd. A surprised Oswald confessed, "I didn't even think I'd qualify. My season hadn't been too good this year, but I was very happy with this race.
“Running the MidEast meet showed me where I was and gave me some confidence coming into today's race. I started out slower this year, then after the mile-and-a-half I picked it up and moved up."
Sisson was equally as happy with her third qualifying performance, stating, "At a big race like this I didn't want to go out and lead it, so I kinda hung back. I'm so excited to go back. I just want to run well there; it's such a great experience. Also, my teammate (Diane Robison in 10th) qualifying with me made this so cool.
“The girls on my team are awesome, and they helped make my transition (to Missouri) so easy."
McLaughlin used this meet to get ready for the National Meet. "My time today was no where near my best,” she said. “I've trained really hard for the past five weeks, but I haven't raced. Today was like a tune up race and I'll definitely be ready for San Diego. I'm a lot more excited for that race.
“It was pretty cool to lead, but it obviously ended a little bit differently than I would like,” she added. “I'm happy because I still made top ten, and I'm looking forward to San Diego."
