Jakub Zivec MN kicks to 15:09 victory
Joseph Manilafasha CO 2nd

Nothing can derail Zivec - Boys Story by Tony Jones

The stark contrast in conditions from a year ago could not derail the predicable outcomes.  Jakub Zivec, the amazing Czech student from Grand Rapids MN overpowered Denver North sr Joseph Manilafasha up the final straight to win the 30th edition of the MW Regional.

 Boys qualifiers

1. Jakub Zivec MN 15:09
2. Joseph Manilafasha CO 15:13
3. Evan Appel CO 15:19
4. Futsum Zeinasellassie IN 15:20
5. Dylan Sorensen IN 15:20
6. Drew Shields IN 15:24
7. Andrew Berberick CO 15:26
8. Joseph Demoor CO 15:27
9. Danny Pawola IL 15:28
10. Steve Sulkin IL 15:28
Speaking of the field conditions, they were horrible to say the least with mud clogging the outer portions of the course, and ice and snow covering the inner sections and the woods.  Several key athletes fell and never recovered as a direct result.

Once the opening cannon started the race, the meet favorites got out well with Zivec, Dakota Ridge CO sr Evan Appel, Fishers IN sr Drew Shields, North Central IN fr Futsum Zeinasellassie among the leaders as the race passed the first quarter-mile going up a first set of hills.  Manilafasha seemed content with being around 20th place and on the outside of his key competitors.

Manilafasha made his first move at the top of the steep climb and Zivec moved with him.  They both came through the first mile in a sturdy 4:49, with the chase pack including Elmhurst York IL sr Steve Sulkin and the aforementioned group back in 4:59.  Neuqua Valley IL sr Danny Pawola and Sulkin’s teammate sr Jordan Herbert were just a shade off.  For Herbert, he is used to being with the leaders and certainly with teammate Sulkin.  Unfortunately, for him another competitor slipped on a patch of ice and stepped on his leg and the result was a “flat tire.”  He partially recovered but was unable to maintain his focus or the elite pace with one shoe.

Still, the show must go on as Manilafasha and Zivec stayed glued together through 2M in 9:37.  Zeinasellassie was the leader of the chase pack at the 2M at about 9:48.  Sulkin fell back into the mid teens along with Pawola, crossing around 10:00.

The crowd noise increased with anticipation as it was announced that Manilafasha had the lead coming out of the final back loop.  He passed the 3M post in 14:39 with a two-second lead and a final straight to go – a victory for the nation’s #1 runner, right?

Wrong.  Zivec mustered one last bit of courage and sprinted right past a stunned Manilafasha and won going away with a fist pump for final closure.  Afterwards, Zivec admitted that his goal was to simply qualify for the national final in San Diego. “Actually, I didn’t think about the win until the last 50 meters,” said Zivec.

Zivec, who was not able to run varsity for his high school because he not an official exchange student, won NXN Heartland two weeks ago and has to be at least given a shot to win both national titles – assuming he chooses to go ahead with both.  Then he will prepare to go back home and finish a 13th year of secondary school.  His love is the 1500m, an event where he intends on improving on his speedy 3:49 personal best with a 3:45 in next summer’s European Junior Championships.  We may see him in a college in the states in 2010 as he did hint at.

The runner up Manilafasha was quite solemn about his performance afterwards.  He indicated that his goals for the start were pretty modest, to “get out in the top 10-15 early on.”  The Colorado ace ran well all race except for not being able to produce a sprint at the very end.  “I’m not concerned about the loss,” he said.  “Wins will come.”

Ninth-place finisher Pawola appeared a little surprised to have qualified.  His 9th place finish comes of some performances which had not met his hopes.  “I felt a little bummed after state, and then not qualifying for NTN’s.  I decided to go for it with a half-mile to go.”

10th finisher Sulkin grabbed the last spot to San Diego, but it was not easy.  He had to come from behind after being in the mid-teens late in the race.  Was he concerned? “Coming into the race, no.  But for awhile into the race I was, but then I was alright.”

Fantasy team scoring:

Colorado came to do what they do every year here and that’s dominate.  They went 2,3,7,8,12= 25pts to easily outdistance Illinois (70) and Indiana (85).  Illinois and Indiana both qualified two individuals for San Diego compared to four for the Rocky Mountain State.
