Highlights
  • 8th-grader Hannah Carson of the Arizona Cheetahs/Chandler AZ, already a top age-group performer and having moved onto the top 12 US this summer, crushed her PR by almost 20 feet to destroy her own Youth Girls record at 173-7. The stunning throw was a US#1, made her the #4 all-time prep with the new jav, and ranks her 7th among all Americans in the Jav this year (same weight jav is used from youth to professionals!)
  • In the best boys TJ of the year, Troy Doris IL topped NON champ Tyron Stewart TX and World Youth champ Christian Taylor GA and scored a new US#1 52-05.50 in the Young Men's division, topping Taylor's best by 0.25.
  • Victoria Jordan TX, the NIN double sprint champ who missed the whole prep outdoor season after leaving her team, exploded back on the scene with a US#3 23.24 in the Young Women's 200 prelims. She will lead a super final that will include NON champ/World Youth silver medalist Chalonda Goodman GA.
  • US#1 in the LJ Jamesha Youngblood added the YW title to her Pan Am, USATF Jr. and CIF titles as it took just a 19-04.25 for the 21-footer to win.
  • In the intermediate boys' 800 prelims, Howard Shepard TX beat his own national youth record of 1:52.25 from last year with his 1:51.94 heat winner.
  • Daniel Block IL upped the meet record in the intermediate boys' discus by a foot, beating the 178-1 set by Geoffrey Tabor OK in 2005 when he spun the platter 179-1 to win by 13 feet.
  • Joining the 200-foot club in the javelin was Alex Cartwright OR, adding nearly eight feet to the intermediate boys' meet record with his 200-0 throw.
  • Ryan Prentice WA, a junior with a 9:06 3200 PR, opened the day with his 17-second victory in the young men's 5000, hitting 15:01.31 to turn back Jim Walmsley AZ in 15:17.26

Worth, Tx.) gave a glimpse of what might have been this year when she blasted away from the field after just an average start and went on to win in 23.24 and become the third fastest performer in the nation this year. HEAT THREE—Freshmen Phyllis Francis (Team Evolution/McCauley, Brooklyn, N..Y.) and Chelsey Sveinsson (Texas Stars/Greenhill, Dallas, Tx.) were close through splits of 30.0, 63.60 and 1:37.0 before Francis pulled away to win, 2:11.01 to 2:12.64. Discus
Final

Alyssa Hasslen (McMinnville, Or.) won with a personal best of 144-3, with Kayla Kovar (Burroughs, Ridgecrest, Ca.) second at 140-11 and Brittney Waller (Quickstriders) third at 136-10..

Youth Girls (13-14)

200 Meters
First Round

Heat Winners Plus Next Four Fastest to Final (Sat.)

HEAT ONE (-1.9)—Jazmin Harper (Mission Valley, Ca.) was the only qualifier in 25.62.

HEAT TWO (-2.0)—Akawkaw Ndipagbor (Together Elite/ MS, Long Beach, Ca.), had a small lead until near the end of the race when she pulled away from Ayanna Scott (Springfield, Il.), 24.86 to 25.37.

HEAT THREE (-0.3)—Atiya Harvey (Mission Valley, Ca.) had a big lead off the turn and won easily in 24.81.

HEAT FOUR (-0.9)—Robin Reynolds (Northwestern Express/MS, Miami, Fl.) is just amazing. After running 2:14.26 a couple of hours earlier, she measures the field here and runs 24.29 for the fastest time of the day. Kenyattia Hackworth (Mobile Parks/MS, Mobile, Al.) also looked good in second at 24.57.

800 Meters
First Round

First Two in Each Heat Plus Next Two Fastest to Final (Sat).

HEAT ONE—Savannah Camacho (San Luis Obispo DC, Ca.) opened up a 20-meter lead only to see Laura McDowell (Southern California Running Cougars, Ca.) close with a rush to win in 2:16.58 to 2:17.40.

HEAT TWO—Elysee Wilkinson (United Stars, {Pa.) had a solid lead at 400 meters in 65.0 and then Cindy Huang went from fifth to first on the backstretch passing 600 in 1:41.0. Robin Reynolds (Northwestern Express/Miami, Fl.) then struck with 100 meters remaining and moved from third to first in the final 100 meters to win over Huang, 2:14.26 to 2:14.61.

HEAT THREE—Claudia Francis (Team Evolution/St. Catherine of Sienna, Franklin, N.Y.), who set the Midget (11-12) record two years ago at 2:13.56, and Nia Fluker (Christway Academy, Duncanville, Tx.), who has run 2:09.77, went through splits of 30.0, 63.0, 1:38.0 with Francis leading. Fluker took a brief lead with 120 meters remaining but Francis was having nothing of that and retook the lead for good, 2:10.67 to 2:11.09. A most intriguing final is shaping up between the raw speed of Reynolds and the strength of Francis.

Pole Vault
Final

Carissa Culver (MS, Newbury Park, Ca.) set a national Youth record of 11-2 ¼ breaking the old record of 11-1 ¾ set by Morgann LeLeux (New Heights, La.) in 2006. Katherine Zingheim (unat) was second at 8-10 ¼.

Javelin
Final

Hannah Carson (Arizona Cheetahs/MS, Chandler, Az.) just destroyed her own national Youth record of 154-1, set at the Phoenix Inv. earlier this year and her own Youth meet record of 144-11 set last year, with, what is unquestionably, the performance of the competition. Carson threw the javelin 173-7 to rank seventh on the U.S. list this year. Anna Adamko was second at 125-7.
