Kentwood WA senior Michael Chinchar had 4:12 credentials from last year, but had yet to deliver the sort of breakout performance that would truly stamp him as one to watch in the Class of 2007. That all changed Saturday evening with a gutsy, run-from-the-front strategy that initially appeared like folly to the track aficionados in attendance, and then seemed like genius as he held on for the win.

“I usually sit back and wait,” he said after his victory, “but this race I wanted to take it to them. I just really wanted to put up a good time and get out there and show what I’m made of.”

Chinchar “took it to them” from the gun, dragging the field through splits of 62.3 and 2:05.1 which saw him carve a 10 meter lead over a pack including Charles White (Cherry Creek CO), Scott Blair (Trabuco Hills CA) and Mack Fleet (University City CA). After the half, Fork Union VA’s Axel Mostrag, a runner many thought would contend for the win, surged to the fore of the chase pack before conceded the phalanx back to White and Fawad Khan (Palos Verdes CA) on the backstretch. Chinchar was alone through a 3:07.6 three-quarter, at which point White seemed to wake up and realize the gravity of the situation—Chinchar wasn’t coming back. White started a long drive that brought him to Chinchar’s shoulder on the turn, and even down the homestretch, but the Arkansas-bound Chinchar dug for one last gear and held off White’s challenge—4:09.67 to 4:10.04.

“I really haven’t won a big race ever,” Chinchar said afterwards, “lots of seconds and thirds, so I really wanted this one.”

G-Mile
Just as the starter raised the pistol for the girls' invitational mile, and gave the assembled runners the "On your mark!" command, number-one seed Alex Kosinski bobbled to her left and froze in an awkward position waiting for the gun.  It may have been the only misstep the Oak Ridge CA senior made the entire race.  Assuming the lead right from the break, Kosinski dragged a persistent Shannon Murakami (Saugus CA) —the only runner attempting to hang on her shoulder—through splits of 66.4 and 2:15.8 before Murakami fell off the pace and Kosinski found herself all alone.

"At the 800 I felt pretty good," she said, "but at the 1200, I was like, 'Oh no.'"

That three-quarter split was 3:26.8, a fact that the meet announcer made sure the crowd was aware of as the track fans rose to their feet and Kosinski powered into her final lap. The quick early fractions may have cost Kosinski a truly jaw-dropping time, but her 4:43.34 was still six seconds clear of the field.  If Kosinski wilted a bit in the closing laps from the ambitious early pace, Murakami may have paid a greater price, as she was caught near the wire by a fast charging Anna Sperry (Simi Valley CA) and Candace Eddy (Davis UT). Sperry got up for second in 4:49.75, Eddy was third in 4:49.77, and Murakami fourth in 4:50.25.
