Poly Long Beach CA sweeps - boys 41.39, girls 45.79 B-4x100 and 4x400
The 4x100 was one half of a bookend evening for Long Beach Poly, accomplished with star Bryshon Nellum in the line-up, but not on the anchor. Stellar teams filled every lane, but it was the Jackrabbits, snapping clean passes out in lane 6, who again took the gold— 41.39 to Notre Dame’s 41.90.
The second half of the bookend came on the night’s final event when the LB Poly lineup of Isaiah Green, Joey Hughes, Evant Orange and Bryshon Nellum again worked their magic. Fellow Cali squads Taft and Dorsey traded the early lead, but by the time Orange was extending the baton to anchorman Nellum, he’d eked out a 2-meter advantage that Nellum would only multiply over the next 400. The smooth striding senior rounded the far turn with a comfortable lead and cruised home past an appreciative crowd for the 3:14.63 win. G-4x100
The Long Beach Poly girls, out in lane 6, had state and national leader Rancho Verde CA on their inside, charging up from lane 5 where they couldn't be seen. They also had inspiration in their back pocket, in the form of the LB Poly boys, who had set a national record in the 800 medley relay the previous evening and won the 4x100 only moments earlier. Looking to nail down a Poly sweep, the first three legs made quick work of the stagger and got the stick to Poly anchor Turquoise Thompson with enough daylight for the lightning-fast Thompson to exploit down the homestretch. They ended up not only topping the Rancho Verde squad, but snatching away the yearly list lead with a 45.79 US#1 time.
