Boys Race Recap

Boys Team: New Mexico rivalry played out in AZ

The questions of the weekend settled around the ABQ XC Club and the Los Alamos XC Club. The boys on these teams had battled 5 times before and the last battle had gone to the LA Boys, who pulled off the upset at the New Mexico State Championship. It was now time to see if the LA Boys could repeat their performance, or would the Red Army get some redemption following last week’s events. But most also believed this to be a ‘three horse race,’ including Wheat Ridge RC in the conversation.

The Los Alamos team started this race like they had over the last half of their high school season. From the gun they bolted to the front of the chase pack and ran in a close gap. The LA Boys were once again led by their top threesome of Allen and Kyle Pittman and Gareth Gilna. At the 800m mark the top 3 LA Boys were marked by Pat Zacharias (ABQ XC). At this point it looked like the NM State meet would be played out again as LA’s #4 and #5 (Tom Bowidowitz and Tom Witherell) were only a few steps behind. Noticeably absent from the lead pack were the yellow clad Wheat Ridge RC, who had decided to employ a conservative strategy over the first mile.

By the mile mark it was clear the ABQ XC was not going to allow a repeat of last week’s 4A State Championship, where the LA Boys took early command and dictated the race. This week it would be the Red Army who determined the pace as Zacharias made a bold move and pushed to the front of the chase pack. From the mile mark to the basketball courts Zacharias led this group which included the Brothers Pittman. Further back in the pack Ryan Clark and Kyle Cooper had surged in front of the Tom’s (Bowidowitz and Witherell) to give the Red Army the clear advantage. It was not entirely clear that two other teams were also racing into contention for a trip to Portland. Mingus XC and Galena XC both had their top 4 runners in the mix but they were clearly behind the Red Army and Los Alamos. And further back, Wheat Ridge RC was starting to move up but they had dug themselves a deep hole.

above, Luke Puskedra ran a powerful race to win in 14:48.63, shattering the course record.

At the halfway mark Academy had hung on to its lead over Los Alamos and Mingus and Galena were hanging on. By now the main question was the position of each team’s #5. For the Red Army, Taylor Murray did not seem to be able to stay true to the early pace and he was back in a fight of his own. LA’s Tom Witherell had a hard time around the softball fields and had to struggle to hang on to every position. Mingus’ Wilson Cutbirth was hanging close to his teammates but Galena’s Nick Tatro was well behind his top 4 teammates.

The loop around the lake changed the race for Los Alamos. Allen Pittman, (right) who would finish 5th as Los Alamos' #1, used this section to engage in a powerful move that would take him from the middle to the head of the chase pack. Going with him was Galena’s Bryan Tibaduiza, who proved to be stronger than Pittman and the fading Gardner. Tibaduiza would be able to hang on and finish 4th overall. Further back the Red Army was paying for their early eagerness and Los Alamos was capitalizing. The biggest move was made by Tom Bowidowicz who moved up past Clark and Cooper of ABQ XC and his own teammate, Gareth Gilna. Pat Zacharias was moving in the opposite direction. He slipped all the way back to 15th. By this point Wheat Ridge RC was charging hard. They looked fresh and smooth but they had dug themselves to deep a hole as Dart Schwaderer was the only Farmer able to sneak into the top 20 and their #5 Micky Nelson finished 2 spots behind Tatro.

Down the stretch it was clear to the fans that the battle for first was too close to call. The field was so deep that the participants were not sure of anything at this point. Each runner was scraping and clawing to win every battle possible. In the end, the deciding blow would be struck by ABQ XC’s #6, Damon Campbell, who finished 25 places ahead of Los Alamos’s Kevin Hemphill to break the 93-93 tie.

"All year I have been fighting to get onto this team," Campbell said after the race, "just to stay on the varsity, and today I went for it all. I knew I had topped their sixth man. We also knew it was very close, it has been with us all year. It always comes down to the end." He acknowledged that his team was disappointed after the state meet loss, but winning the regional helped make up for it. "The state championship is the most important race for us; this is all fun here, but we want to win state every year, so it was tough for us. At the beginning of the week we were very solemn. We didn't want to talk a lot. We were disappointed and dejected, but we came out here and got pumped up for the race and knew we were going to go for it."

Wheat Ridge was never able to make up enough ground as they fell to 6th. The surprise of the day was delivered by Galena, who placed their top 3 in the top 15 and their top 4 in
the top 30, as they finished third overall 18points behind the NM pair and 5 points ahead of Mingus.

Boys Individual: Puskedra takes an early lead and never looks back

When Luke Puskedra added his name to the list of participants at the NTN Southwest Regional, he also added some extra flavor to mix. The race now had an interesting individual battle to go with the already interesting team showcase. For Puskedra this race allowed him to add a tune-up meet in between his last race (Utah State Championships, October 17) and his next race (Footlocker West Regional, December 1). For the fans it was an interesting opportunity to view three undefeated runners battle it out in front of a deep field.

From the start, Puskedra made it known that he meant to lead. At the 800 mark he was out in front of the lead pack that included Ben Johnson, Jim Walmsley and Spencer Gardner. At the half mile mark, that pack was pretty tight, but of the four, Puskedra looked to be having an easier time handling the torrid pace.

"It is a pretty difficult course," Puskedra said after the race. "The first mile is kind of deceiving. I went through and saw 4:33 and I was thinking it wasn't too hard, but when I went through the second mile I started pushing it, and that's where all the hills are. By the third mile I was just trying to finish. It was a difficult day today."

As the race neared the first major obstacle (the tight right turn under the bridge) Puskedra had opened up a 4 second lead on Johnson who was now leading the chase pack. Following the mile mark the runners looped around the pair of softball fields on the southernmost section of the course. It was at that point that Puskedra extended his lead to 10 seconds. It was also over that section that Johnson and Walmsley dropped Gardner, who was now fading fast. At the basketball courts (about halfway through the course) Walmsley was having trouble hanging on to Johnson.

Earlier in the week Ben Johnson and his coach had determined that the perfect place to make a move would be at the lake. Johnson was instructed to make his move when he saw water. This was a perfect plan considering the fact that BenJo is not able to swim, so he fears water. When the runners scooted under the bridge and up the first steep hill, Johnson decided that he had waited long enough and that he needed to go after Puskedra now.

“At that point,” Johnson said later, “he actually had a pretty big lead and I thought, 'Why can't I beat this guy?' I turned it on a lot, but I ran out of real estate. He’s a tough guy and I really appreciate him coming out here and hopefully I’ll see him again.”

Johnson surged hard after the lanky harrier from the “Beehive State," but while the move brought Johnson within 8 seconds of Puskedra and dropped Walmsley from contention, he wasn't able to catch his Utah rival. Four runners were able to run faster than the course mark of 15:37 which was set by Victor Zazueta. More impressively they were able to run faster than Ken Cormier’s 2004 Border War time of 15:42. In 2004 Cormier went on to a Footlocker Finals victory. With the marks they put up on Saturday, the top runners at the SW Regional have proven that they will be a force in further postseason races.

The first four runners all broke the course record.

2. Ben Johnson NM 14:56.46
3. Jim Walmsley AZ 15:27.01
4. Brian Tibaduiza NV 15:36.13
