Samuel Borchers said he's run better in his track career. But the senior from Yellow Springs, Ohio,
figured Sunday's first-place at the Nike Indoor Nationals is the greatest win of his career to date.
“I guess so,” said the Penn State recruit, whose coach is Vince Peters, chairman of USA Track & Field's
national race walk committee. “It's not the best I've ever done, but it's the biggest.”
Borchers, who stands around 5-7 or 5-9 - “I like to say I'm 5-9,” he admitted – hung back until late in the
race, content to have Ben Hubers (Marietta, Ga.) and then Dominic Della Pelle (Kennett Square, Pa.) set the
pace.
With three laps to go Sintayehu Taye (Ashburnham, Mass.), last year's sixth-place finisher, pulled into the
lead and quickened the pace. Borchers still hung back in fourth behind Taye, Della Pelle and Hubers.
On the next to last lap, Hubers sped past Taye on the backstretch with Borchers right behind. On the
gun lap, it was Borchers' turn to take over the lead. He put daylight between him and the field on the turn
and crossed the finish line in 4:14.19.
“It's scary – the first race of the season – you don't know where you are,” said Borchers, who hasn't had
any serious track competition this winter. “I've run a couple of small races and my best time this year is
around 4:26. I'm a racer, not a time-trial guy. I came out on the last lap and I said, 'Okay, I can do this!'”
And he did. Second was the Ethiopian-born Taye in 4:15.75 with Hubers a very close third in 4:15.78.

Girls

A continent-wide smile for Alex Kosinski

by Elliot Denman

Alex Kosinski's smile may have stretched all the way back to
her hometown of El Dorado Hills, California.
Heading into the gun lap she knew this was going to be her day. And, once
she'd pulled ahead of Danielle Tauro on the backstretch of that final 200-meter
circuit, she had absolute confidence in her ability to bring it home as a
winner.
"I just didn't want to see it come down to a final sprint; I knew that
Danielle had all that speed," said the University of Oregon-bound senior, who'd
trailed Tauro in the Reebok Boston Classic mile in January.
And now she can smile all the way back to California.
Her overpowering 4:45.18 performance - putting her eighth all-time on the
national charts - edged the previous NIN record, Katelyn Kaltenbach's 2004
4:45.32, by 14/100ths of a second.
For Tauro, clocked in 4:47.89, this was her first loss to an American
runner since the 2005 Nike Outdoor Championships mile won by Virginian Sarah
Bowman. And it was her only individual race loss of any kind since the trials of
the 1500-meter run at the World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, last
August.
For the Michigan-bound Tauro and sensational Hammer Track Club/Southern
Regional, NJ High School sophomore teammate Jillian Smith, the third-place
finisher in 4:51.66, the distance medley relay the day before may have taken
something of a toll.
And the long winter season they've had has taken considerable energy, too.
"I couldn't be happier with the season Danielle and Jill have had," said
Southern Regional High School coach Brian Zatorski.
"They're both exhausted, man, but they both were great. I am more than
pleased. You can't win everything in this sport.
"We know Kosinski's a great runner - give her all the credit - and she
came in fresh."
Barnesville, Ohio sophomore Stephanie Morgan came on strongly for fourth
in 4:53.13 and Cory McGee, the brilliant freshman from Pass Christian,
Mississippi, who'd done much of the early pacesetting, held on for fifth in 4:53.64,
with two more under five minutes.
Fastest out of the two earlier sections, at 5:01.84, was Freehold
Township, NJ sophomore Allyson Moskal, who'd won the Eastern States two-mile title 10
days ago.

Cory McGee MS (right) was the leader through a quarter in 66.2 and a half mile in 2:21, with Alex Kosinski CA and Danielle Tauro NJ right there.
Tauro moved in front with Kosinski moving with her as they passed the three-quarter mark in 3:36.7.
Kosinski pulled away on the last lap.
