Give them a baton and Eleanor Roosevelt High School's Blazin Raiders are in a class all their own.

And on their hometown turf, the local Greenbelt, Md. racers are at their very best.

The Raider foursome of Dominique Lockhart (1200 meters(, Takecia Jameson (400), Tameka Jameson (1200) and Marika Walker (1600) ran away from a class field to take it all in the meet record time of 11:48.68. All but junior Lockhart are seniors.

"We just did what we came to do, what we trained to do," said Walker, who is headed for North Carolina State, while the Jamesons are booked for Miami.

Added Walker: "We knew the other teams were tough, but we ready for everybody."

"Can't win them all; we were off just a little and lost to a great team," philosophized Brian Zatorski, coach of runner-up Hammer Track Club/Southern Regional High School of Manahawkin, N.J., whose team had won the Eastern States DM crown in New York nine days ago.

The Hammers' Jillian Smith gave her team a 30-meter lead on leadoff, but the Raiders soon took over. Jessica Bergin (400) and Kate Bergin (800) followed for Southern, with the redoubtable Danielle Tauro on anchor.

But this time Tauro couldn't erase the gap over half a lap. She anchored in 4:53 but Walker stayed strong at 4:59.

The Hammers ran 11:55.02, also under the previous meet mark of 11:56.87 by the 2003 Rockford, Michigan team, with Mountain Brook Track Club of Alabama third in 12:02.79.

Ann Arbor Youth Track Club's 12:43.95 took the opening section.

Boys

Distance medley relay (1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m): Chris Ferry, Tim Shea and Andrew Jervis, the first three runners Henderson High School (West Chester, Pa.), knew they had to hand the biggest lead possible to their anchor man, sophomore Chris Aldrich.

They knew the Aldrich would have to go head to head with powerful Axel Mostrag, whose anchor leg a year ago helped Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy to second place.

The plan began working when Ferry took a lead after 600 meters and Shea increased it. By the time Jervis handed the stick to Aldrich, the Pennsylvanians were well out in front. Mostrag began to narrow the gap slowly, and with two laps to go he was within striking distance. Just behind Mostrag was Emil Heinking, who brought Chardon (Ohio) High School into third.

Mostrag made his move on the backstretch. He fought his way into the lead and, for a moment, it looked like he wouldn't be caught. But Aldrich responded with a surge of his own to retake first place. Aldrich was first to the finish line and Henderson – competing here as the Warrior Track Club – got the win in 10:16.57. With a time of 10:17.16, Mostrag and Fork Union wound up bridesmaids for the second year in a row. Third in 10:22.87 was Chardon.

"I didn't know how far back he was," Aldrich said of Mostrag's charge, "and I thought, 'Ohmigosh!' It scared me so much – I know how fast he can close. But I thought I had it [a final surge] in me. Around the last turn, I knew I could do it."
