Boys story

Sean Holston (Springfield, Va.) won convincingly, pulling away from Lamarr Davis
(Knightdale, N.C.) after the 200-meter mark and never looking back.
The blue-clad Holston finished in 47.12 to break the five-year-old meet record. Holston's time is the
eighth-best in the history of prep indoor track.
Holston, with the 200 meter final ahead of him layter in the day, declined to talk to the media afterwards.
Davis took second in 48.18. Chris Ward (Orlando, Fla.), winner of the slow heat in 48.37, took third in the
composite standings.

400 meters – qualifying: With ninety contestants and fifteen heats, qualyfing for Sunday's eight-man final was a Darwinian process.

1st heat: Lamarr Davis (Wendell, N.C.) won in 48.76.

2nd heat: First place went to Nevin Gutierrez (Riverside, Calif.), who anchored J.W. North High School's triumphant 4x400 squad at last year's Nike Outdoor Championships. Gutierrez's time was 50.19.

3rd heat: Sporting a bright green headband, junior Kendall Gregory (Strongsville, Ohio) led wire to wire and cruised home first in 49.89.

4th heat: Junior Bernard Goodwyn (Wilmington, Del.) had a PR with a time of 49.19, followed by Louis Watson (Mobile, Ala.) in 49.68.

5th heat: Corryl Boyd (Waldorf, Md.) went unchallenged, breezing home in 49.06.

6th heat: Black-clad Sean Holston (Springfield, Va.), running smoothly, turned in a 48.44.

7th heat: Finishing first was sophomore Kenneth Brooks (Durham, N.C.) in 50.16.

8th heat: Sherrard Marrow (Hampton, Va.), a junior, was first in 50.19.

9th heat: Aaron Anderson (Fayetteville, N.C.) sped into first in the final meters to win in 50.68.

10th heat: Junior Varick Tucker (Belleville, Mich.) took the lead on the homestretch, winning in 50.36.

11th heat: First place went to Quinn Evans (Arden Hills, Minn) who crossed the finish line in 51.67.

12th heat: Handy Dawes (Nashville, N.C.) surprised Chris Ward (Orlando, Fla.) late in the race. Dawes was first in 49.37 with Ward second in 49.29.

13th heat: Brandon Johnson (Phenix City, Ala.) took first with a 51.08 clocking.

14th heat: In the day's closest race, Treg Jeffery (Phoenix, Ariz.) edged Johnny Ault (Birmingham, Ala.). Both were timed in 5l.60, but further review showed Jeffrey finishing in 51.592 to 51.599 for Ault.

15th heat: Antonio Abney (Willingboro, N.J.) closed out the prelims with a win in 50.50.

The field for the final will include LaMarr Davis and Lee Moore out of heat one; Gregory Kendall from heat three; Bernard Goodwyn from the fourth heat; Corryl Boyd out of heat five; Sean Holston from heat six; and Handy Dawes and Chris Ward from heat twelve.

Holston's 48.48 time was the day's fastest.

Girls

by Elliot Denman

Jessica Beard needed all the wiles of a senior-class veteran.
The Euclid, Ohio star had long been a racer on the national level and came
to Landover loaded with critical experience.
So when Thandi Stewart, the sensational Union City, California freshman
phenomenon took it out in 26-plus seconds and kept the lead heading into the
fourth and final bend, Beard knew exactly what she had to do - flooring it down
the stretch to clock a 55.24 triumph.
Of course, it was nothing close to the meet and national-record performance
of 51.93 notched last year by Francena McCorory - a clocking that may stay in
the books for eons - but it still would have won three past NIN finals.
Stewart never relented and battled to the line in 55.43, with Blazin'
Raiders/Eleanor Roosevelt relay star Takecia Jameson grabbing third in 55.77,
nipping Ridgeland, Mississippi senior luminary Bianca Knight's 55.81.
All this came in the second of the two-section final, with the first race
going to Seaford, NY soph star Ashlea McLaughlin's 55.89.

400-METER QUALIFYING - No big surprises here. Jessica Beard of Euclid, Ohio and Bianca Knight of Ridgeland, Mississippi, senior veterans of the big-time national racing circuit, are set for an epic clash Sunday after decisive heat wins.

Beard ran a 55.22 and 55.44, but don't discount Thandi Stewart from this one. The sizzling freshman from Union City, Calif. punched her ticket to the eight-runner, two-section final in 55.81, third best over-all.
