The first day of the 2007 National Scholastic meet saw several meet records and many great individual efforts, especially on the track. Steve Murdock and Philip Feinberg wrote themselves into the meet and Armory history books. Friday was only an appetizer to the great weekend of high school track on the Armory speedway.

Boys 5000m
Steve Murdock came to the Armory dreaming about taking down Brad Hudson’s long-standing high school national record of 14:29.28. But despite his impressive cross country resume, this was his first indoor 5000m, so he knew it would not be easy alone. That’s why he agreed with his biggest rival, Pennsylvanian Paul Springer, to share the pacing duties. And indeed, it was amusing to see the two favorites pull away from the field featuring such renowned runners as New Jersey’s Andrew Hanko and exchange the lead every four laps.

The strategy worked well in terms of leaving their competition behind, but pacing for the national record was another story. A 14:29 would require hitting each 400m in 39.5 and each 1600m in 4:38, but the pace lagged from the beginning. Springer and Murdock hit the 1600m mark in 4:44.1 and never got within a few seconds of national record pace again. Hanko tried to stay with them but he was dropped at the beginning of the second mile. After 18 laps, Murdock retook the lead and opened a gap on the Pennsylvanian. After the race the Shenendehowa star would say that he knew Springer had a great kick, so he made this move with the specific goal of abating Springer’s leg speed. The last four laps were all Murdock’s show as he kept accelerating to successfully dip under the meet record of 14:39.74. His time of 14:36.57 is the second best in US history (after Hudson) and a New York State record. Springer finished second with a Pennsylvania state record 14:51.07. And Hanko in third also grabbed his state record with a 15:04.42.

Murdock’s approximate 400 splits were 69.0, 71.0 (2:20.0), 72.3 (3:32.3), 71.8 (4:44.1), 69.8 (5:53.9), 70.6 (7:04.5), 70.7 (8:15.2), 71.3 (9:26.5 at 3200m), 70.3 (10:36.8), 70.3 (11:47.1), 70.1 (12:57.2), and 66.9 (14:04.1).

His 1000 splits were 2:56.0, 2:57.9 (5:53.9), 2:56.7 (8:50.9), 2:56.2 (11:47.1), and 2:39.4. His last 800m was run in 2:14.0, his last 600m in 1:38.3, his last 400m in 65.4, and the last 200m in 32.4

The Syracuse-bound senior did not regret missing the national record. Comparing this race to his third place finish at Footlocker finals, he thought that his San Diego experience was much better than today’s, calling it his best race ever.

On Saturday Steve will join his Shen teammates in attempting to take down another meet record – this time in the 4x1 mile relay. On Sunday they will also run the 4x800.
Asked about his outdoor time goals, Murdock said he wanted to break 8:50 for 2 miles, 4:10 for one mile, and run a 1:53 or 1:54 for the 800m

Girls 5000m
The girls’ race did not have such fireworks, but it featured another victory by a huge margin, this time by Michigan’s Marissa Treece. With Shelby Greany and Kristen McGlynn scratching, she was the only Footlocker finalist on the track and the heavy favorite to win. For the first half of the race Treece let a New York freshman Elizabeth Briasco set the pace and sat closely on her shoulder. The freshman went out quickly, in 2:39.6 and 5:26.7, but then she let the pace slack. On the fifteenth lap Treese had had enough of sitting and made a huge move, immediately opening a big gap on Briasco who was not able to go with her. From then on it was all Treece, hitting consistently around 40 seconds per lap and only increasing her lead. By the time she hit the finish in 17:04.32, she lapped the entire field, including Briasco, except for New Jersey freshman Chelsea Ley who would finish second in a new freshman national record of 17:41.90.

Afterwards, Treece said this was a major personal best for her because her previous PR of 17:54 was on a cross country course, even though she did not toe the line with any specific time goal, just aiming for the victory. Next year she will be running for University of Notre Dame, but before then she will take a shot at another national title in the 2 mile on Sunday.

Boys DMR
This traditionally very competitive race produced some speedy team times and some even speedier individual splits. First, let’s talk about the latter. Craig Forys, who needs no introduction, got the stick in dead last place in the seeded heat. What followed was an amazing display of playing catch-up, with Forys passing one rival anchor after another and eventually moving up from 14th all the way up into a battle with St. Benedict’s Brandon Jarrett for the third spot, eventually losing by a step. But his 1600m split of 4:05.9 was certainly worth the price of admission. Jarrett himself split 4:14.7, but even SBP was not Jersey’s best finisher in the race.

Ahead of them, Connecticut’s Glastonbury and the always-recognizable Old Bridge battled for the gold, with the title going up I-95 North thanks to Donn Cabral’s 4:16.3 anchor to seal their victory in 10:08.49. They were so fast that they did not even stay to get their trophies after the race.

Old Bridge finished in 10:15:44 (splits: Nick Carbone 3:06.9, Allan Lunkenheimer 48.5, James Hauser 1:56.9, Matt Ciambrello 4:23.2). They improved their seasonal best time by 5 seconds. While waiting for the medal ceremony, they said they were happy with their performance, adding that they fulfilled their team motto of “go big or go home.” On that note, they also added they will try to challenge for the win in Penn Relays and Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Girls DMR
What promised to be a close battle between Warwick Valley and Bay Shore ended up as a major disappointment for the former and a relatively easy win for the latter. Sarah McCurdy led off for Bay Shore in 3:32.8, putting them in the lead, but Warwick went into the lead on the 400m leg. Kristen Peluso opened a huge gap on the 800m lead, giving Warwick a lead of at least 3 seconds over Bay Shore at the last handoff. But halfway through the anchor leg, Callie Hogan caught and passed Tori Pennings. Pennings briefly retook the lead as they see-sawed for the lead, but after Hogan opened a huge gap with 350 meters to go, it was all over. Hogan finished strong to anchor in 4:53.9 and gave her team the victory in 11:48.54 while Warwick was passed by several other teams on the last lap, giving Burnt Hills-Balston Lake the silver in 11:51.74.

Other running events
In boys sprint medley, Motor City from Michigan had a close battle with Warren Central from Indiana winning the Midwest duel by a margin of 3:26.48 to 3:26.64. Motor City’s splits were: Darien Lewis 23.6, Cedric Everson 21.1, Kenny Price 49.5, and Isaiah Ward 1:51.8.
On the girls’ side, the judicial branch edged out the papacy with Benjamin Cardozo taking the title in 4:01.30 over New Jersey’s Pope John in 4:03.69 (Emily Carrollo anchored in 2:12).

Boys High Jump
Philip Feinberg flew here all the way from Arizona, but the real Wright Brothers moment occurred when he cleared 7’1 to get the national title. It was his best jump, indoor or outdoor, and by far (meaning an entire inch) the best in the country this winter. The pre-meet favorite, Texas’s Grant Lindsey, who has cleared 7’2, could not crack 7 feet this time but it was sufficient for second.

Other field events
Shakia Forbes made only four legal jumps, ran through the pit in another one, and then jumped into the car to go to the Nike meet in Maryland. She completed Part 1 of her I-95 long jump double successfully, winning with a 19’4.75 jump. It was a relatively easy win for the favorite with nobody else going over 19 feet.
On the boys’ side, Hanif Kendrick came out of nowhere to take the title in 24’3.75, winning by 8 inches. This was not a very deep field with only 8 boys over 22 feet.
Another Jersey gold went to DeAnne Hahn in shot put. The favorite did not disappoint, winning by over a foot with a 46’8.25 toss. Georgia sent a formidable contingent that took three of the next 6 places.
