Race Recap
by Brett Honeycutt, DyeStat Southeast Editor

It was Colby Lowe's race to lose nearly the entire last mile.

He didn't let it slip away. Lowe, the two-time Texas 5A champion, won the Foot Locker South Regional by about 10 seconds over defending South Region Champion Ryan Hill of Hickory (NC) High.  It was Lowe's third consecutive time he qualified and Hill's second consecutive.

Lowe, a Southlake Carroll TX senior and considered the favorite coming in, was in the lead pack that went out in about 4:41 for the first mile.  He said his goal for the day was just to run hard.

"I just came out here to run as fast as I could," Lowe said.  "All the guys out here bring a whole new level with them.  We just come out here to run as fast as we can.  It's just awesome."

Lowe's victory was the eighth time a boys runner from Texas won the South Regional, joining Brian Sullivan (2003), Brad Hauser (1994, 1993), Ricky Gallegos (1990), Eric Henry (1986), Reuben Reina (1985) and Stacy Sutter (1984) and tying Virginia for the most years (eight) a state has had the winning runner.

Lowe said the difference between his previous finishes the past two years, when he was 7th last year in 15:09 and 9th the year before in 15:07, was that he put in some high mileage over the summer to give him a good base.

"I've really stepped up my mileage," said Lowe, who ran about 14:45 Saturday.  "During summer, I pushed up my base.  I'm in a lot better condition."

Lowe said he wasn't after a certain time or record, but he was looking to just qualify.  "Just pushing hard to race against that finish line," Lowe said.  "...place is what matters."

Hill said at 2 miles is about when Lowe separated himself from any remaining challengers.

In the last 800 meters, he separated himself even more.

"He just kicked into another gear," said Hill, a three-time North Carolina 3A state champion.  "For a split second, I thought I could catch him, but he has another gear I don't have right now.  He's just too good right now.  There's always another race, though."

"Obviously, I'm disappointed I didn't win," Hill continued.  "I can't complain.  I've had a tough year with injuries.  I'm just glad to scrape together a second place."

The top ten qualifiers included four from Virginia, three from Texas, two from North Carolina, and one from South Carolina.  Lowe will be joined by Southlake Carroll teammate and junior C.J. Brown, who was a stunning and impressive 3rd in 15:00.  The duo went 1-2 last weekend in the NTN South race.  Texas 4A champ Rory Tunningley, a senior from Lockhart also made it in 6th (15:08).

Virginia was expected to have the biggest contingent, and they did, but it wasn’t quite as expected.  What wasn’t surprising was VA 3A champ and Midlothian sr Jason Witt in 4th (15:03), and the repeat San Diego qualifiers Griff Graves (Abingdon senior, 7th, 15:09) and Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg junior, 8th in 15:11).  Witt (along with Kathleen Lautenheiser for the girls) made the Midlo decision to do Foot Locker instead of NTN Southeast pay off.  Graves, who has been inconsistent all year, had a very good day, as did Porter.

But more of a surprise was Midlo senior Michael Hammond in 10th (15:14).  Make that three runners for the school at Foot Locker Finals.  Virginia had 8 of the top 15 overall, but the one who was considered almost a shoo-in to make it, and did not, was Blacksburg sr Peter Dorrell in 12th.

The other big surprise among qualifiers was Mooresville sr Patrick Campbell joining Hill as North Carolina qualifiers (9th, 15:12).  Among the non-qualifiers, Brentwood TN sr and Great American champ Sean Keveren (17th) was a shocker.

SURPRISE QUALIFIER

The runner most likely to have been not on most peoples’ radars (not even on the possible qualifiers list for most) was Campbell, who ran in Hill's shadow in North Carolina and in the shadow of Chapel Hill's Taylor Gilland (injury kept him out of Foot Locker) and Nick Graw (Enloe).

Campbell, the North Carolina 3A runner-up behind Hill this season, led Mooresville to its second consecutive North Carolina 3A title and kept his team in the NTN regional rankings hunt as a bubble team most of the season.

The decision to run Foot Locker as an individual instead of the NTN Southeast Regional was based primarily on the team and coach Michael Serefine taking a vote on the team's chances at qualifying for nationals and Campbell's chances at qualifying as an individual because of his continual improvement during the season.  He finished eighth at the state championships in 2006 and 2nd this past season, while dipping close breaking 15 minutes this season compared to not even cracking 16 at McAlpine last year.

At the Foot Locker South Regional last year, he ran in the junior boys race and finished second in 16:14 compared to this year's ninth place seeded-race finish in 15:12.  For comparison, if his 16:14 time was inserted in last year's seeded race, it would have been 82nd-84th.  A unbelievable improvement from last year of more than a minute.

The decision turned out to be a wise one. Campbell took the ninth of 10 qualifying spots.
"We didn't think we had a chance to qualify," said Campbell of Mooresville's team's chances in NTN.  "I kept improving through the year.  We knew there were 15 guys who had a chance of qualifying and it seemed like a sound decision."

Campbell was just off the pace at the mile mark and came through in 4:43.

"I was pushing 12th place or so.  That's what I wanted.  I thought going out with the leaders would be too fast for me.  I think the race plan worked out the way I wanted it to go.

"I was just thinking about getting to the lake (where the 600 meter mark is located), the back lake, in eighth or ninth.”

With just less than 800 meters left in the race, Campbell was ninth, with a gap between him and the eighth spot at the time, and could hear the 10th place runner, Michael Hammond (Midlothian High, Virginia), and supporters yelling the places.

"That was kind of nerve-wracking," said Campbell, whose dramatic improvements have helped him get noticed.  He will decide between N.C. State, Virginia and William & Mary.
