Union Catholic catches Bethel VA at the finish

by Pete Cava for NSSF

Union Catholic High School (Scotch Plains, NJ) emerged victorious from a hard-fought race with Bethel (VA) High, while Western Branch (Chesapeake, VA) finished third in the composite standings, courtesy of a swift time in an earlier section.

In the fast section, Union Catholic's Shariff Stubbs, Obinna Nwafor, Mike Suarez and Garrett Ellis turned in a time of 1:31.72 to edge Bethel. Bethel's time was 1:31.90.  The clocking for the Western Branch foursome was 1:31.99.

“We wanted perfect sticks, perfect times and stay focused,” said Suarez, a St. Peter's recruit. “It all started to come about around the 400 meter market around the straight-a-way. We were right where we wanted to be in that point.”

Ellis credited Suarez for a fine third leg. “Michael came through in a good spot when he handed me the stick,” said the Connecticut-bound Ellis. “I figured I’d sit back a little bit, run my race, until it was time to make a move. Coming off the turn I wanted to see where I was at. I was in a pretty good position, so I just made my move.”

Girls Summary by Bob Geiger

Coming into the third exchange at the 400 meter Mark, Oak Ridge FL appeared to be ready to defend its 2007 800-Medley title.

Landi Wilson thought otherwise.

The Walnut Hills, Ohio senior focused her energy towards the idea of winning this year's medley after taking 3rd last year out of the middle heat.

"This is the toughest 400 I ran all year. This was the biggest thing to win this year. We really wanted the flowers."

Wilson ran a 54.3 split to bring Walnut Hills from 3rd to 1st.

According to fellow senior Kelly Thomas, "Landi was extremely focused the entire season. All we need is a really good 400 runner (to win the medley), and that was Landi."

Coach Karl Kaufmann agreed. "This is purely exciting. Once we won state [4 x 400 relay], I thought we'd be in the mix. It helps to have a good anchor, and when Landi ran 54.1 at state, I knew we'd be there."

The Walnut Hills team had won their state meet 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay, setting the State Record in the 4 x 400 (3:45.89).

The losses of Thomas and Wilson won't put them out of contention next year. Walnut Hills will replace Landi Wilson with Ashley Liverpool, runner up in the Emerging Elite 400 on Friday, running 55.64.

Runners-up Withrow HS returns everyone on their relay, while '07 Champs Oak Ridge also returns their enire team, ensuring that the 2009 version will prove to be another exciting race.

by Elliot Denman for NSSF

“This is what we came for, this is what it’s all about,” exulted Landi Wilson, moments after she’d anchored her Walnut Hills of Cincinnati team to a narrow win over Cincinnati rival Withrow, 1:44.10 to 1:44.51, with the M180 Club team (1:44.90) and Oak Ridge of Orlando, Florida (1:45.09) hard on their heels.

Sophomore Shaunice Fitch (12.5 leadoff 100), junior Taylor Ware (12.0 100), senior Kelly Thomas (25.1 200) and senior Wilson (54.3 anchor 400) did it for Walnut Hills, and made Karl Kaufman a very happy coach.

“We ran third in this event last year, and knew we could do a lot better this time, especially after the Ohio State Meet,” said Kaufman.    “We won the 4x200 and 4x400 and our 3:45.89 in the 4x4 was a state record.   We really worked for this and it all paid off.  We’re a nice blend of experience and youth, and they really came together, the way a champion team should.”

Wilson is bound for the University of South Alabama and Thomas for George Mason University, both on scholarship.  But this may be the end of their line in track and field – their
scholarships are for soccer.

“Landi is the reason why we won,” added Thomas. “She really put it on herself to get us through that race on the anchor leg. She passed four people to win the race over the last 200 meters. It was incredible.”

“From the moment I got the stick I knew I had to do something,” said Wilson. “I had to get within striking distance before the group got to the home stretch or I wasn’t going to be able to catch them. I was sacred I wasn’t going to be able to catch them, but it seemed like I kept getting faster and they were slowing down.”
